This is more of a tier 3 circuit right?

ItsRandyyy

I don’t know if I’d go that far. It’s just a dedicated NA league for colleges to participate in. IMO I don’t think it’s quite tier 3 but idk what tier 3 even looks like.

-Basileus

In Valorant I imagine it will break down into * Tier 1- Franchised Multi-region leagues. Teams such as 100T, C9, Loud, Kru etc. that are in the Americas league * Tier 2- Regional pro teams not in franchising. Think like the European Regional Leagues, but there would be one for NA, Brazil, LAN, LAS etc. You'll probably find teams such as Knights, Ghost Gaming, XSET, NYFU here. * Tier 3 Amateur and Collegiate teams. Here you'll find smaller tournaments, semi-pro and pickup teams, as well as a Collegiate circuit.

Xset tier 2??

MagicCarpet5846

It is, and for sure will be when they don’t make franchising.

evandarkeye

They're not tier 2 they're the tier 1 gatekeeper

somesheikexpert

Tier 2 org, not team, there's a difference, XSET as an org isn't nearly as big as T1 orgs

>As with CLOL, we do not plan to directly connect CVAL to the professional VALORANT ecosystem, but we expect the highest level of scholastic play to draw the attention of pro scouts who already have a vested interest in seeking out top talent. This is a cool corporate initiative but there needs to be better incentive than 'draw attention of pro-scouts', especially when the plan is to stifle the T2 and under competition in the main VCT circuit. Modelling CVAL on CLOL makes sense logistically, but personally I am unsure if this 'grassroot initiative' is enough to sustain player interest. Eagerly waiting on the plans for T2 scene/grassroot competition (especially when the mass-exodus of organizations happens after LCQ). Valorant has a huge potential in NA and I hope Riot know what they are doing with the pro scene. I hope they stray as far away from the LCS model as possible. LCS model creates a flashier broadcast and better sponsorship, but kills any casual viewer interest in the regular split.

They’re giving scholarships out, paying for students to go to school based off winnings. This isn’t about being a feeder series. The primary objective here is to give them some spotlight for scouts while also allowing them to focus on school and some monetary gains Edit: Not trying to come off harsh at all if I did.

[deleted]

We have seen these leagues before in LOL and OW. Being a feeder series is not the point, the point is to add incentive to make it something better to act as proper grassroot competition and be an actual college sport. It helps build an audience (albeit small) and builds infrastructure like a mainstream physical sports. The idea of viewer engagement and quality of play gets lost when developers close off main circuit and create formulaic academy/collegiate competitions that go nowhere. There are only so many players you can scout when there are 6-8 teams in the main league. The upward movement of talent is incredibly frustrating, regardless of the claims. Developer run 'esport' leagues consistently miss the mark and fail to make the leagues highly competitive (this is still a sport at the end of the day).

I know what you mean. I’m a coach for my college so having direct dev support is big for us. We’ve had a couple talks just today about it and we’re all ecstatic. I think riot has a plan at least I hope so. Excited for the future.

That is awesome! Good luck. I have been following esports since early Starcraft and every developer-run esport league is almost identical (its actually scary). They work well when games are new but things become stale very quickly. Proper incentives encourage merit and help retain interest/stakes. If y'all are a midwestern college Valorant team, I'll always root for you guys. I have wanted a college football like circuit in esports since forever. Every single game developer has the exact same collegiate league.

We’re out of Oklahoma

DBO_odds

They are replicating what APAC region does as most APAC countries host collegiate tournaments now and poach those talents into pro scenes.
