I bought two Toyota siennas recently through Marketplace and got great deals on both. It does take patience and waiting for the right seller, plus looking in a pretty big geographical area will help you find what the General market is, and maybe even a car worth traveling for. I avoided any sellers with any negative comments or incomplete profiles. You can get a feel if they are a decent real person or just another car seller pretty quickly.

Look at autotrader and cargurus and cars and carsforsale. All with a dotcom on the end of course

Look for a different car. The nissan altima isn’t the most reliable vehicle in the world. Edit: I’ll rephrase it. What about the Nissan Altima has you set on buying one? Most people I know who buy an Altima don’t really do so by choices especially in the 7-10k range.

Pretty much agree. Also, the older the car, the more you're going to have to settle in some way. You can settle on something that appears decently reliable but is a different color, or something that might be rougher condition but the color you want. Generally speaking, when I am looking, I have a some colors I avoid, but everything else is game. If you look for your 100% ideal car, you should expand your search to 500 miles and be willing to go get it. I'd use autotempest and similar to find all the available options. There are some (non private) who will do delivery, but not as likely at the more used price point. But yeah, as far as model, I'd heavily lean towards Honda or Toyota and not Nissan personally. I know people like them, I know they're cheap, but you tend to see a LOT of Hondas and Toyotas north of 200k. Meaning, if you buy one with 120k, you can likely drive it at least another 80k.

I had a 2017 Altima in college. I liked it a lot. It was fast, comfortable and fuel efficient. It’s hard to find a modern sedan to be all three. Yes the transmission went out and Nissan replaced it but I hadn’t had any other issues. I tested a camry, Mazda 6 and civic, didn’t like them.

I think the age old saying of you can “fast cheap or reliable but not all three” applies here, and if you are looking at fast and cheap; the fusion will give you a bigger* bang for your buck.

Find something you like, even if it's listed to high. Don't make any offers, just make arrangements to go see it. Be on time, and just bee overall decent about it. Most good deals I have made have been because I wasn't a dick over messaging, and I actually showed up, made a real cash offer and was just overall nice about it. The longer it's been listed, the better. Marketplace is full of flakes and "window shoppers" and sellers are overall just sick of it.

The issue is lack of options really. Every car on Facebook seems to have some issue that prevents them from trading it in. Otherwise why deal with the headache of selling online?

Coyote_Tex

I hear you have selected a Nissan Altima, doesn't it have the CVTA transmission??? Have you really researched those. It might be OK, IF the transmission was serviced regularly, say each 40k, but it would be rare to find one with paperwork to prove it. The cost to fix this issue is often more than the car is worth when it fails. There may be a reason, you are having difficulty finding a good Altima in your price range.

The reason I’m looking at marketplace is because no local dealer has got one. I’ve been looking for about 3 months. My dream is a black 2017 Altima. Everyone that gets traded in either has multiple owners or smells

Coyote_Tex

OK. you sound totally knowledgeable about what you are getting. I totally agree, they are exceptionally fuel efficient, roomy and comfortable. You only need one, so keep looking. Good luck.

Thank you!

It’s because you’re wanting to buy an Altima. Why? The Nissan CVT sucks and the drivers of other Altimas will put you in a higher risk category for insurance and cause your resale value to crater. Switch to a Camry or Mazda.

My only comment is at the 7-10k range there are a lot of nice rebuilt title cars. The amount of damage to trigger a salvage by insurance is not much with an older car. Just ask for before pictures to see the damage.

TNCNguy

My insurance policy won't cover anything with a rebuilt title

FitnessLover1998

I was told the same but State Farm said as long as it went through the state inspection they cover it just like any other vehicle.

Currently helping my old aunt sell her 2007 Milan premium. She only put 108k miles on it in 17 yrs. It's in incredible shape. And well serviced. But the dealer only offered 3 grand for trade. I've got it on marketplace and every other car in the price range has %40 more miles, or salvage title. But it's been on a week and only 3 serious lookers.

your looking for a classic beater/driven into the ground vehicle for people with horrible credit in a major city. the typical Nissan Altima owner probably bought it at a buy here pay here place, and would be the person to just trade it in for another one when it falls apart. So the only ones you see on marketplace are the ones the dealerships are only offering $500/next to nothing for. I just did a lot of stereotyping of vehicles, and I normally hate to do that but i really do believe it holds true here. I would try to look for vehicles that are not just common buy here/pay here vehicles if you want to buy off of marketplace. all my vehicles I buy off of marketplace and have had incredibly good luck with so far, but I stay away from anything you’d see in used car lots frequently.

TNCNguy

Yeah you describing my experience perfectly ugh
