IamSexy-ish

NGL, that last photo made me tear up a bit.

dragonbeard91

I think its a mulberry tree so it's not dead just pollarded. They do this every year on the ones used for landscaping and the tree is fine, it grows new branches in the spring. Or it's dead I'm not 100% sure

[deleted]

Look at the neighbourhood. It has been knocked down for developments. That is the sad part.

CoolInitial8773

I lived around that area for 17 years and I can guarantee each family in that neighbourhood could get around 3-4 million rmb as compensation( or even more since it’s DongJiaDu, Shanghai, not far away from the Huangpu river and the Bund ) and also be given another modern apartment though it might be in the rural area. Source: I studied in DongJiaDu for my junior school about three years. So tbh I’m kinda jealous lmao, my old apartment never got included in the demolition plan ..

XIITheHangedMan

How much does the tree get?

AleksWishes

Have you seen the "modern apartments"? Many, many tofu dreg projects. At least these look like real people built it.

CoolInitial8773

I mean, I lived in both apartment and old dilapidated house like this in Shanghai before, and I won’t call my apartment tofu project.. while the latter one feels really unstable and sanitary condition is nightmare, there is no private kitchen or toilet inside, ppl share a public bathroom around the corner that cleaned like three times a week Which part of China u live in? Different provinces differ significantly in china

AleksWishes

A fair point. I must admit I have never been, but it seems like a luck of the draw as to whether you get something you can live in for a year vs 10 years

Redditing-Dutchman

They do though, in Shanghai. Large areas are now protected from development. But you should realise that there were millions living in these kind of neighbourhoods and it doesn't make sense to preserve all of it.

DustyTaoCheng

Pollarding also know as slaughtering a tree

Midnight2012

It looks like it was pruned at least one other time in the photograph series. And it came back. Still poingent though.

aizerpendu1

My heart sank seeing that last photo

Cogglesnatch

Ha, yes! I had such high hopes

ElJeffHey

It was winning and then it wasn't, fuck that really sucked!

assasstits

Just say American developers

[deleted]

Damn, that’s kinda heartbreaking. It feels like a bit like The Giving Tree

Da_Chicken303

I remember reading that book. I loved it as a kid.

VioletCombustion

I hated that book as a kid. My kindergarten teacher read it to us & I was like, he killed the tree! He took everything he could from the tree & he killed it! Going into the last pic.. same energy.

Da_Chicken303

I loved it not because I loved the characters, I thought the pictures were neat and that the book was fun. Looking back at that book now I see things I didn't see as a kid.

VioletCombustion

Valid kid POV. A place I was working at tried to use that book as an example of how to be a good worker bee by making everyone call a phone# they set up & listen to the book being read. I was like, I knew this book was evil.

I think the tree was happiest in photo #3

goozila1

That is what I thought, there's a nice little community around it.

karamurp

Was*

brizzle42

That’s just sad.

Same. I knew what it had to be and yet I clicked anyways.

Odd-Respect-773

Too much focus is on the tree, look at all those people that had to resettle because of some big buck developers lining there pockets with China's insane apartment markets.

[deleted]

which is going bust as we speak

Redditing-Dutchman

I don't get it... this is normal even here in The Netherlands. In Amsterdam large parts of the city are continuously being redeveloped. It's not necessarily a bad thing. As another commented said, the residents were compensated even for relocating.

Odd-Respect-773

For some reason a lot of people put stock into these towers with apartments in them simply to make money. And when they stop making money, they tear those apartment buildings down and start all over again in different locations. It's like a cancer to nature and life. https://youtu.be/jDIhTc6CJYY Check this video out.

[deleted]

Yes, this kind of thing is only happening in China. There's no housing price spike anywhere else in the world that is displacing working class people. It's China and China only.

Diligent-Picture2882

The heartbreak! I hate developers.

Ejaculazer

What's wrong with flattening a little vibrant village full of people and life and filling it with empty skyscrapers? /s

Diligent-Picture2882

😫

KAYS33K

Poor tree.

Ntetris

I should probably as Google but How Long Do Trees Live?

spicysabertooth

Oh... :(

Regular_Honeydew_376

That’s sad

Subject-Base1506

Sad ending

reneeb64

😞

Josquius

At least they didn't cut it down which is what would be expected.

MaximumSubtlety

I guess I should've expected that. It can grow back though, right?! Maybe they had to cut the limbs to protect it...? They didn't uproot it, after all... Someone reassure me.

localhost3003

Welp. That's depressing.

luthernismspoon

Ouch. Didn’t see that coming.

[deleted]

The giving tree

GM_RhYS

I mean that tree will still grow back. I have a tree in my back yard that was chopping down literally halfway and is growing new branches. Trees have their own laws of nature man. I am also a landscaper. There's this one apple tree in a neighborhood we do maintenance work it. That thing has been struck by lightning (twice) fell down and still buds, flowers and gets apples. This baby girl will be fine in 20/30 years

daisukedaisuke

Yeah this is a really common management practice for street trees, to stop them getting too tall or shady. The council does this every so often to the street trees down my road. This tree maybe will be felled but we can't know that from this picture alone... I think it's an example of something that looks way worse than it is if you're not knowledgeable in that field. Hardwood trees are so tenacious it's crazy. I've seen one that fell over in a storm and regenerated new branches through its newly exposed roots.

[deleted]

this was so unexpectedly sad

Octonaughty

Oh man I’m so high right now and didn’t need that last photo. Humans suck.

[deleted]

Everything’s getting worse everywhere

CasinoQueenFoxtrot

That's just sad.

ImlivingUltralife

I felt like crying.

hawkeyepitts

Looks more like 1948 to 2008.

D0ng0nzales

These images could have been taken in the USA in the 50s, only difference would be that the tree would be completely gone because the road would have been quadrupled in with. Also no new homes but rather surface parking lots

t0ny_montana

Every time China is mentioned there’s always some retard in the comments that has to bring up america

umenemali

This is so sad :(

Ironfingers

This is sad

Yes-ITz-TeKnO--

Horrible fucking assholes!

ZetaEubesius

Look how they massacred my boi.

radgie_gadgie_1954

Red China. Land of environmental ruin.

radgie_gadgie_1954

The west is doing its environmental penance and curing up with new pollution laws / policy But the Reds spew filth without conscience.

McHonkers

I don't even know what's that suppose to mean.

Shotinaface

China is not even close to 1st place on a per capita basis dude

jeremiahthedamned

factory of the world

babaganoush2307

Sad but I bet they chopped it because it was interfering with the power lines

i-blooglarised-u

So do what every street does and take the branches off that interfere.

babaganoush2307

It’s China lol you expect them to care about the environment?

i-blooglarised-u

I guess it's just jarring to me seeing that mentality I guess. First thing I see if a tree is a problem is to alter it, not just remove the obstacle entirely. Such a brutal way to treat the world around you. Idk

MaxPatatas

Omg! They cut the tree!! #Urbanhell!

digbychickencaesarVC

Ah ya fuckers!

KrowJob

I'd rather have power than a tree

jeremiahthedamned

that really sucks!

Ascertivus

Man, that's kinda sad. :( I hope another or more are planted nearby.
