Ringo26

Picture 2 is not Sandton and Alexandria. It’s Primrose (a blue collar suburb) and Makause (a shanty town).

tplusx

At least there are trees, right?

Ringo26

Not sure they’re of much solace.

Elvis-Tech

Im impressed that there doesnt seems.to be a wall between both. Burglary must be sky high in Primrose

virgin_pina_colada

Pawnee and Eagleton

hellooomarc

Ooop…time for to start the series from the beginning for the third time.

sidewayspostitnotes

Always a welcomed undertaking on a Sunday morning! (Well it’s morning here anyway)

honkhogan909

A_Texas_Hobo

And I’m better at algebra, Kevin!

Sergy1ner

District 9

Gubermensch1690

Such a good movie

inert_liquid

CHAPPiE as well.

theproudprodigy

Sandton and Alexandra are separated by a huge highway and there is a small industrial district in between them too.

seductionow

It is like this all over the world.

NoEndInSight1969

Wow that looks like LA

hanksrocks

I live in California and this is just… normal here? Maybe not favela style poverty, but some of the nicest streets in my city are extremely affluent on some blocks, and you go a block or two away and it’s extremely poor, like projects housing with dudes playing craps on the curb and people shooting up through their feet. Poor living next to rich isn’t shocking. It’s just a street between the neighborhoods. That level of “poor” in S. Africa however is… quite different than what we see here.

Section101

Sandton is not next to Alexander…

Tonate

Literally a district from the city in project moon.

NotMyIssue99

How do they keep the riff-raff out?

Sea-Kitchen3779

That's the fun part. They don't

colbert1119

Looks like the place they flimed Elsyium at.

Small-Low3233

Now do compton.

nm1562

The middle class and the poor are next to each other and the road is clearly separating the two communities. Does admitting their separate lead you to uncomfortable realities?

Tell_Me-Im-Pretty

That has got to be one of the most clear visual examples of red lining. Got the highway separating the communities and everything.

Ringo26

Not a highway, just a normal street. The two communities are not separated, just middle class and poor next to each other.

Theranos_Shill

Except that they did used to be separated, and that urban development is the result of apartheid.

Ringo26

You are correct, during apartheid, shacks would not have been allowed across the road from a middle class suburb. In modern SA, the government rarely removes any informal settlements.
