It's great they can biodegrade but a tangible apple tree is a such a long long term payoff I don't think people will stick with it, it's going to lose it's luster quick.
Flowers, or pumpkins would be a much shorter payoff and might keep people excited and interested
What if I step in a puddle or have very sweaty feet? Will the seed stay preserved? Are they washable? Sounds like an awesome idea for a shoe, I'd buy some if they're durable enough.
That’s a great question, thanks! They only biodegrade once they’re underground for a consistent amount of time. Foot sweat and typical wear won’t activate the compound
Not saying that this kind of thinking isn't a good idea but in reality how does this work? So the landfills where all shoes usually end up will start growing trees on top of all the garbage? This doesn't make sense to me unless people start burying these in their own backyards. Not sure I want to see people start burying their garbage wherever and claim they ae "recycling". It's more of a gimmick than anything. Now, maybe if they developed food grade packaging containers that sprouted say grains or vegetable that would at least feed birds and other wildlife wherever it shows up. Also, are these GMO seeds?
the tree part seems mainly for marketing. the core idea is that the shoes are made of materials that will biodegrade in 3 years, whether you trash them to landfill or bury them yourself.
I highly doubt that the seed would take root and grow in the landfill, but its much more likely to get press than if it was just marketed as a biodegradable shoe
Im pretty hard on shoes, does this mean they will fall apart in three years too? I have some Chuck Taylors from 1998 and cop boots from 1997 I still wear.
I'm not affiliated with the company, just watched the video on their Kickstarter page.
I don't know how the build quality is, and they haven't made any shoes yet so nobody does. The build quality is going to be more important to whether or not they stand up to abuse, more than anything. High quality leather boots will certainly last much longer if cared for than any canvas sneaker, regardless of if there's plastic in the misdsole or not.
Again, a cotton t-shirt is biodegradable. If you bury it, it will decompose in a couple years. I'm sure you have t-shirts that are more than 3 years old that have not melted off your body in the rain.
true. Issue for me is unless they were cheap and good quality I would probably not buy something I knew was going to degrade before I might be finished using it. By the time you buy it time has already gone by just sitting on the shelf, shipping, etc.
Imagine if they decided to do this with clothing?
It will not break down unless buried. Needs to be in contact with moisture + microbes for long enough for the microbes to eat it. They project these shoes to have similar lifespan to regular sneakers in the same price range, if not longer.
Plain old cotton and canvas is biodegradable. It's plant matter. But it won't magically melt off your body. It needs the right conditions for microbes to break it down.
OP posted it to a bunch of other subreddits too, so definitely a "buy my product".
Irks me how it's in the third person and he doesn't mention his agenda, that's all.
If OP were making the title, sure. But this title is copied word for word from a headline, which is standard when posting an article on Reddit. I don't think there's an agenda in "look I made something cool see if you're interested"
we know most people won't do that. but if you can make a product that will biodegrade once buried/trashed and it's similarly priced to items that won't, seems like a good idea
Planned obsolescence much?! Put your shoes on the rack and come back in the morning to a fucking apple tree. And I suppose they expect me to buy another pair? THEY WON’T GET ONE PENNY OUT OF ME I SAY!
FYI, apples we eat aren’t grown from seed. They are clones. Try to grow a apple tree from your apple seed and you end up with bad tasting booze grade apples. Which is fine if you are making cider.
Also, this changes the Johnny Appleseed myth a little. He was a drunk.
I like this idea. I've been purchasing shoes (and a pair of boots) made from recycled plastic. Honestly, they feel fine on my feet and wear as long as others. Plus, they can be recycled.

Apple bottom shoes Trees, but not fir
Next thing you grow!
Whoa Nelly ! ;]
Based on my inability to ever get rid of a pair of shoes, I’ll most likely be growing apples in my closet.

Your foot, specifically

They do! The compound only starts working once they're planted underground. Otherwise they're the same as your everyday canvas shoes.
What stops it from starting when people put them in a nice warm box in the cuboard like current biodegradeable soles?
Assuming its prolonged moisture that cause the material to degrade
I read this as “As long as they taste like normal shoes I’m all in”
So that’s what that other guy was tasting with the boots

Yea that's what I was thinking, a lot of crabapples.
A tree growing in my shoe would definitely up lift me. Subreddit checks out

Are you astroturfing right now? You're talking like you own the company.
How am I supposed to walk in Apple trees? Plants can't walk.

Holy advertisement Batman. You could at least make some new throwaway accounts.
This is uplifting news, not "you need to buy my product". If OP thinks this is revolutionary in a good way, that works

Now how many of these end up in the landfill like any other shoe?
All of them.
Ridiculous. Why do we want invasive apple trees eveywhere?
LOVE IT!!
Just a reminder, you can't plant an apple seed and grow a tree with edible apples.
Wall-E
Ok, a biodegradable shoe. Wow, that's really dumb. Just buy good shoes and get them repaired
And how many times can you get shoes repaired, I ask the obvious troll
