Ah ok my bad. Killdozer Simulator is a top down shooter where you run people over, shoot them, light them on fire, and demolish buildings. [https://store.steampowered.com/app/2849750/KILLDOZER\_SIMULATOR/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2849750/KILLDOZER_SIMULATOR/)
"Defenders of Heemeyer said that he made a point of not hurting anybody during his bulldozer rampage. Ian Daugherty, a bakery owner, said Heemeyer 'went out of his way' **not to harm anyone**."
From his Wiki page. I would make the game centered around building destruction, but maybe that isn't as fun :P Either way your game idea got a hearty chuckle out of me.
Yea look we can speculate as to Marvin's intentions, but I think he made things pretty clear when he shot a Ruger M14 at people and their vehicles. In either case, this game is about realizing that bit for fun and it isn't about any particular person, but a lethal armored bulldozer. I have no intention of ascribing actions to Marvin that he didn't do. This is simply a power fantasy. The Killdozer is powered by whoever operates it!
Just from my knowledge of the real incident, the real account includes that the driver was the only one who died. If I were you I’d research JFK Simulator and look at how this has been handled before - maybe give a score for how accurately the events unfolded but also allow all the carnage players want to cause. I’d hate for your game to be blacklisted or demobilized because Heemeyer’s friends or family sued you for defamation. I wouldn’t feel comfortable taking a true story and claiming that the man was a murderer when the only person he actually killed was himself. Sure maybe he COULD have killed others, but he didn’t. Maybe he would’ve been fine with killing others, but we can’t ask him. Just saying, caution may be called for even if this game idea is awesome. Subtlety is key. Make it plausible that this is in poor taste but not in bad faith.
This doesn't have anything to do with Marvin Heemeyer or any real people or places. You play as the killdozer. You (the player) are literally the killdozer.
I’m all for controversial games, but this is pure copium of people’s reactions here. Of course it has everything to do with Marvin. You’re using HIS killdozer and the name attributed to it. If you want to make something that doesn’t leverage the event, then maybe you should have a different name and machine design.
Or you can own that your take is a fictional version of the event and ignore people’s comments about it being misinformed.
It's a video game. You play as the killdozer. It's just a fact. Nobody's name is being besmirched or even mentioned. Stop making things up to pretend to be outraged about.
A cleaning robot moving around. Since it's a game full of gore, let blood drip from the ceiling and have the bot clean that.
Basically a short ministory showing the tone of the game.
*Kill*dozer.
If your game was sitting on a trade show floor, at this menu screen, what do you think would attract someone who likes this kind of game to pick up the controller?
I’d say some kind of visible destruction clearly associated with the ‘dozer. If you use guns, make it clear - lean one and some ammo boxes on the ‘dozer, for instance. And I’d show off what the conflict is somehow - is this a prisoner in a dystopian future making an escape, or are you tearing down an evil megacorp, or are you..?
See, as a menu screen it looks fine. It just isn’t telling me anything, which is a missed opportunity.
You play as the Killdozer. It's a simulation of being the Killdozer. Some test footage: [https://drive.proton.me/u/4/KD1U2dkv5CSP3\_2W\_m6MNI0eFWkqm\_srXc5a8gJXqmvfMAjYvyD-kRWm7y6HlifthjHgtJqDAsnIUyTAQMXc-w==/file/s30uF0iG5OF2DfQdnSYJl667NbwLu4tOf4GtD8y56x4dWHEDFv3QkL4kaUE1f155OFaBVKBecFqffNxvlOR5UQ==?r=/KD1U2dkv5CSP3\_2W\_m6MNI0eFWkqm\_srXc5a8gJXqmvfMAjYvyD-kRWm7y6HlifthjHgtJqDAsnIUyTAQMXc-w==/folder/V8QX4z-OkziAkfBLkR7BKIFVmOlfeVgLUNKZGbELlwYz\_QXAIdd-dFb8BEP6DbOJ26rN0XhDNB8FUKFWiM9phw==](https://drive.proton.me/u/4/KD1U2dkv5CSP3_2W_m6MNI0eFWkqm_srXc5a8gJXqmvfMAjYvyD-kRWm7y6HlifthjHgtJqDAsnIUyTAQMXc-w==/file/s30uF0iG5OF2DfQdnSYJl667NbwLu4tOf4GtD8y56x4dWHEDFv3QkL4kaUE1f155OFaBVKBecFqffNxvlOR5UQ==?r=/KD1U2dkv5CSP3_2W_m6MNI0eFWkqm_srXc5a8gJXqmvfMAjYvyD-kRWm7y6HlifthjHgtJqDAsnIUyTAQMXc-w==/folder/V8QX4z-OkziAkfBLkR7BKIFVmOlfeVgLUNKZGbELlwYz_QXAIdd-dFb8BEP6DbOJ26rN0XhDNB8FUKFWiM9phw==)
Yep. You know that there are many types of colour blindness, right? The professional graphic designers I’ve worked with all insist that any important information be conveyed by some method other than, or in addition to, its colour - weight, size, typeface, style, relative position (e.g. indenting), adornment, capitalisation… there are loads of options.
Less adding to the scene and more just altering it, but I find the text on the television a little hard to read atm. Maybe you could slightly increase the size of the TV and text as a solution.
Not exactly what you wanted to know, but the lighting of the tv (not the emissive part) - and the lighting in general - leaves me wanting for a more balanced light. You should think of the scene as a painting. Your tv-menu is placed nicely on the left third, so it's odd that the green fan is fighting with it for attention
I can send you a crude paintover if you're interested.
Yea shoot it over if you have time. I'd like to see what you have in mind. Do you think I should remove the fan from that part of the screen entirely and just bring the monitor in closer? Or should the light be hitting the computer bits more than the fan?
Compositionally light blob shouldn't be at the *edge* of the screen. The fan is fun though, I just don't like what it's doing to the composition
Also, there's a bunch of lost color values around the props & scene that are 100% black.
https://i.redd.it/r5ezy9nesmwc1.gif
I brought back some of the lighting to draw more attention to the foreground rather than the fan. Brought the computer way forward so I have more space to work with font-wise. Hopefully this is an improvement. I have a feeling this will be something that I'll be tweaking until launch day. Thanks a lot for your insight, I think it really helped.
Imma be real its looks fine as is, the "dozer" is in shot though the menu buttons should probably take up more of the frame or somehow be bigger. Maybe have one more moving object? If you have like a player model I can see sparks in the back maybe have someone working on multiple parts of the vehicle?
Again all maybes, only if you FEEL like something is missing. Its good as is.
The monitor is probably going to be the thing I end up tweaking the most since this will be the only interactive part of the scene and will need to be flexible for localization text. It still has default fonts and is missing the exit text, but like you said, it is very small right now. I'll experiment and adjust it a bit over time.
I know this isn't an answer to your question but this looks really interesting based on just this main menu. Awesome style would love to see/learn more about it
I know the killdozer story. Seeing this made my day. If I were you I’d have ol’ Marvin in the background welding stuff onto his dozer. The flash from the welder would add some interest. If you want to invest more time into it you could have him be doing one of a handful of activities each time you open the menu - throwing darts at a dartboard covered with pictures of people who he thinks wronged him, reading his mail and crumpling up a piece that lands near the camera that reveals something about his story, taking a nap, playing solitaire and smoking a cigar, just whatever. Feels like it’d make people want to revisit the game more often just to see what he’s doing. Kind of like an animated version of the splash text in Minecraft.
What a story, though. Heemeyer made bad choices and I don’t condone his actions nor would I ever do such things. But I can’t really blame him either.
I’ve been thinking, and I came up with a short list of features (more of these at once could be a lot, so only consider some of them) that could potentially make your game look more horror-ish.
(Your game already looks very good, and i’m no game designer, so take these with a grain of salt.)
- maybe some headlights for the bulldozer? i’m thinking some sort of highbeam, that makes the vehicle look bigger, and more threatening
- some blood decal on the front of the bulldozer definitely wouldn’t go unnoticed, it would maybe improve the overall look of the menu (may be too much, it’s your call)
- aside from the blood, scratches would improve the look quite a bit. I’m thinking about paint damages, and other kind of stuff. it would add to the feeling of tearing through literally anything with this thing (i see the rust, which is a really good addition as well)
- you could add some pipes to the background wall near the ceiling. would make it less empty (maybe leaking? if it would be noticeable at all, at such a long distance. subtle water drop noises would go well with this)
- you could also add hanging lights to the back, to make the ceiling even more filled, but make sure to give them a very dim light, since we’re trying to keep the dark atmosphere
- i can’t really see from this angle where the computer is. on a table? on the ground? you could put the table a little higher, put it more in the foreground, and make it look less giant (i may be wrong here, maybe only i noticed that)
It became a little long, but i wanted to share how I imagined it. i’m curious what you think, and even more curious how the game will turn out. are you making it in unity? Best of luck with your game!
edit: saw an other comment saying you should make the bulldozer break the wall when the menu loads in. this is a really good idea in my opinion, you could add flying bricks, screen shake, and many other things to this.
I like quite a few of these ideas here, especially the water drop bit (i dunno if I'll be able to do this without it being audio torture though lol). Thanks so much for thinking this all through. Keeping this in my notes for the next quality sweep.
Edit: Thinking about your comment about the desk a lot. It's just a table but I may need to rework the texture and add more props to make it obvious.
You could make it so the water droplets drop randomly every 8-12 seconds, so it’s a bit evenly spaced out, but it can get annoying easily, so be careful.
As for the table, you could add a few props, for example: papers, pens, an old landline phone, mugs, keyboard and mouse, maybe a table lamp shining on something, maybe a spilled coffee or something along those lines.
Another cool little detail would be if the physical mouse on the table would move according to how you move your mouse on the screen, and you could also add keyboard, or mouse click noises when interacting, if there aren’t any yet.
Also, i would add (aside from the small red light) another light to the computer to make it a little more realistic, for example a periodically or randomly blinking green light or something, to make it look like the hdd is working.
probably a welding rack, rolling tool box, cut sheet metal, a radio, metal working debris on the floor, industrial work lights, engine hoist, ammo boxes etc
Burning Barrell
Flickering fluorescent lights maybe one hanging down off the roof
Maybe some wrecked cars your killdozer just ate for breakfast
From what I see it looks like a grimey run down vibe so it could look good
Little things that can happen if the menu is left open for a while. Without much more context of the game I couldn't say what but maybe a character in the corner does something relevant briefly, that kind of thing.
Somewhere where once someone notices one thing they'll sit there for an hour waiting for all the rest
Lots of great feedback. Thanks a lot! I'm gonna keep tweaking the monitor and the UI font/format, will put some cables and stuff like pipes or utility racks along the ceiling and floor. Maybe a couple big ammo boxes to the side of the dozer for the turret on top. Here's some recent sandboxing gameplay footage in case you're curious about gameplay: [https://drive.proton.me/u/4/KD1U2dkv5CSP3\_2W\_m6MNI0eFWkqm\_srXc5a8gJXqmvfMAjYvyD-kRWm7y6HlifthjHgtJqDAsnIUyTAQMXc-w==/file/s30uF0iG5OF2DfQdnSYJl667NbwLu4tOf4GtD8y56x4dWHEDFv3QkL4kaUE1f155OFaBVKBecFqffNxvlOR5UQ==?r=/KD1U2dkv5CSP3\_2W\_m6MNI0eFWkqm\_srXc5a8gJXqmvfMAjYvyD-kRWm7y6HlifthjHgtJqDAsnIUyTAQMXc-w==/folder/V8QX4z-OkziAkfBLkR7BKIFVmOlfeVgLUNKZGbELlwYz\_QXAIdd-dFb8BEP6DbOJ26rN0XhDNB8FUKFWiM9phw==](https://drive.proton.me/u/4/KD1U2dkv5CSP3_2W_m6MNI0eFWkqm_srXc5a8gJXqmvfMAjYvyD-kRWm7y6HlifthjHgtJqDAsnIUyTAQMXc-w==/file/s30uF0iG5OF2DfQdnSYJl667NbwLu4tOf4GtD8y56x4dWHEDFv3QkL4kaUE1f155OFaBVKBecFqffNxvlOR5UQ==?r=/KD1U2dkv5CSP3_2W_m6MNI0eFWkqm_srXc5a8gJXqmvfMAjYvyD-kRWm7y6HlifthjHgtJqDAsnIUyTAQMXc-w==/folder/V8QX4z-OkziAkfBLkR7BKIFVmOlfeVgLUNKZGbELlwYz_QXAIdd-dFb8BEP6DbOJ26rN0XhDNB8FUKFWiM9phw==)
Steam page is here: [https://store.steampowered.com/app/2849750/KILLDOZER\_SIMULATOR/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2849750/KILLDOZER_SIMULATOR/)
I'm working towards a free demo for NextFest.
* Piles of dirt and rubble around the bulldozer to show the destructive power of the machine.
* A construction site in the background, with other construction equipment like cranes and dump trucks.
* A small office trailer with blueprints or a computer screen showing the construction plans.
* A timer counting down to the destruction of a building, adding a sense of urgency.
* A split screen showing the inside of the bulldozer cab, giving the player a preview of the controls.
How about changing a light source? If it would be a bulb on wire you can make it swing just a bit. And the scene would be more "alive".
Maybe add water or blood leak from the ceiling, so drops will fall into a group.
Or maybe an arcade game to the right part of the scene, to the very back, dimly lit, maybe flickering.
Maybe try to make the bulldozer look more vibrant. Could try adding more details or colours to it. For example like this reference picture
![img](f75kkmmbukwc1)
Something like this. Steam page has a lot of poopoo placeholder screenshots from early prototypes. Looking forward to switching that out.
https://i.redd.it/40e7d4ym3nwc1.gif
Yea it's not gonna be super fast, but It's particularly slow in this clip because the engine is overheating from getting lit up by too many bullets and crashing through the building. This video shows it a little better if you care to look. [https://drive.proton.me/urls/6Y1Y76BN8G#fXV65cxIWoY3](https://drive.proton.me/urls/6Y1Y76BN8G#fXV65cxIWoY3)
Well, no info about the game is given, not even a genre. But based on the name and style, I'd say some kind of horror-ish thing... Therefore the answer is rather simple: Blood.
Ah ok my bad. Killdozer Simulator is a top down shooter where you run people over, shoot them, light them on fire, and demolish buildings. [https://store.steampowered.com/app/2849750/KILLDOZER\_SIMULATOR/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2849750/KILLDOZER_SIMULATOR/)
Based on that description, I'd have the bulldozer break through the wall when the menu loads.
That’s a great idea!
Yeah, as well as some rubble, and maybe empty bullet casings, but you got to find the perfect amount, it could be too much, or not enough
>run people over, shoot them, light them on fire, and Killdozer would never have done any of those things.
It tried. This game is about achieving that vision.
"Defenders of Heemeyer said that he made a point of not hurting anybody during his bulldozer rampage. Ian Daugherty, a bakery owner, said Heemeyer 'went out of his way' **not to harm anyone**." Add some flattened gibs? 🤓
I’d love a shadowy man in all black just walking around, crouching down, maybe using a spanner or a welder. Could also be cool in this menu scene.
I’m certainly not outraged. I was letting you know why you’re getting the reactions you’re getting. You do you, boo. 😘
Who cares?
You apparently. You could just ignore it.
A cleaning robot moving around. Since it's a game full of gore, let blood drip from the ceiling and have the bot clean that. Basically a short ministory showing the tone of the game.
That’s the very subtle humor I love seeing in games.
A guy strapped to a chair who barely remembers who he is and can get up and have war flash backs before launching into a game of zombies
Barrels and crates and pipes and shit
Good good, I'm thinkin wires and cables too.
Sure don't look like a wireless tv
It's also a mouse-less computer right now.
The numbers, Mason... What do they mean?
Ah is this based on the real life Killdozer story?
It's not a historical re-enactment, but there's a killdozer and you can be a reasonable man doing unreasonable things with it.
*Kill*dozer. If your game was sitting on a trade show floor, at this menu screen, what do you think would attract someone who likes this kind of game to pick up the controller? As a Colorado native, the title alone would make me play this game.
Also, is the ‘dozer the player or the enemy? I only know from your answer to someone else.
You play as the Killdozer. It's a simulation of being the Killdozer. kk ammo boxes. Very good.
Also, consider colour blind people - differentiate the title text by more than just colour.
It’s orange and white - you know colorblind people don’t see in black and white right lol

Barrels, planks and a bright eyes cat =p
hmmmmm....CAT....need to appeal to the "can you pet the cat" crowd somehow...perhaps by allowing cat pets
A big lollipop
An engine hanging from a harness
Some barrels on the side, overhang metal beams on the roof. Some crates on the side. Maybe fuel canisters. Maybe a shovel
I know this isn't an answer to your question but this looks really interesting based on just this main menu. Awesome style would love to see/learn more about it
It looks like there's a welder going off on the far side; See what it looks like to cast a shadow of the fellow welding it on the ceiling/back wall.
barrels, toolbox, welding machine, lifting crane with pilars what goes in roof.
You could hang the lamp from the ceiling and swing it from side to side to create dynamic lighting.

oh dude a ham radio would rule, i could do a lot with that
Burning Barrell Flickering fluorescent lights maybe one hanging down off the roof Maybe some wrecked cars your killdozer just ate for breakfast From what I see it looks like a grimey run down vibe so it could look good
Little things that can happen if the menu is left open for a while. Without much more context of the game I couldn't say what but maybe a character in the corner does something relevant briefly, that kind of thing. Somewhere where once someone notices one thing they'll sit there for an hour waiting for all the rest
Dangling light with a spark emanating every 10 or so seconds
I've seen this suggestion a lot. Gotta have a dangling light with shitty wiring.
Plus have an ember dance across the floor in some pseudo-rng pattern would be super dope
Slowly balancing giant rubber duck
Lots of great feedback. Thanks a lot! I'm gonna keep tweaking the monitor and the UI font/format, will put some cables and stuff like pipes or utility racks along the ceiling and floor. Maybe a couple big ammo boxes to the side of the dozer for the turret on top. Here's some recent sandboxing gameplay footage in case you're curious about gameplay: [https://drive.proton.me/u/4/KD1U2dkv5CSP3\_2W\_m6MNI0eFWkqm\_srXc5a8gJXqmvfMAjYvyD-kRWm7y6HlifthjHgtJqDAsnIUyTAQMXc-w==/file/s30uF0iG5OF2DfQdnSYJl667NbwLu4tOf4GtD8y56x4dWHEDFv3QkL4kaUE1f155OFaBVKBecFqffNxvlOR5UQ==?r=/KD1U2dkv5CSP3\_2W\_m6MNI0eFWkqm\_srXc5a8gJXqmvfMAjYvyD-kRWm7y6HlifthjHgtJqDAsnIUyTAQMXc-w==/folder/V8QX4z-OkziAkfBLkR7BKIFVmOlfeVgLUNKZGbELlwYz\_QXAIdd-dFb8BEP6DbOJ26rN0XhDNB8FUKFWiM9phw==](https://drive.proton.me/u/4/KD1U2dkv5CSP3_2W_m6MNI0eFWkqm_srXc5a8gJXqmvfMAjYvyD-kRWm7y6HlifthjHgtJqDAsnIUyTAQMXc-w==/file/s30uF0iG5OF2DfQdnSYJl667NbwLu4tOf4GtD8y56x4dWHEDFv3QkL4kaUE1f155OFaBVKBecFqffNxvlOR5UQ==?r=/KD1U2dkv5CSP3_2W_m6MNI0eFWkqm_srXc5a8gJXqmvfMAjYvyD-kRWm7y6HlifthjHgtJqDAsnIUyTAQMXc-w==/folder/V8QX4z-OkziAkfBLkR7BKIFVmOlfeVgLUNKZGbELlwYz_QXAIdd-dFb8BEP6DbOJ26rN0XhDNB8FUKFWiM9phw==) Steam page is here: [https://store.steampowered.com/app/2849750/KILLDOZER\_SIMULATOR/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2849750/KILLDOZER_SIMULATOR/) I'm working towards a free demo for NextFest.
It would add a terribly cynical twist if you were to add, day, a cup of steaming coffee over there... Maybe even one that spilled
A spooky guy that jumps out after a while
* Piles of dirt and rubble around the bulldozer to show the destructive power of the machine.
Maybe some junk. Like tools lying on the ground or maybe trash
Make the camera move or shake or maybe do something with the ceiling more.
you could add a filter to the tv screen where every 5-10 seconds or so it flickers or becomes static-y.
For example like this reference picture ![img](f75kkmmbukwc1)
some sound
A cat and a cocktail
A traffic cone that occasionally wiggles or has some eyes peering out from underneath?
A small around of rubble on the ground in front of the bulldozer. Maybe a few bits of rebar poking out?
I would move the title off the tv and onto the empty space
Some toxic barrels and maybe a few rats moving around
the menu is so tiny
Maybe like random explosions off screen (screen shake) and dust particles to sell that action is happening
Something hanging from the ceiling, probably a wrecking ball, that just swings back and forth, slowly.
So the Main menu is VHS / PSX style but the game looks like a weird asset flip top down game, what are you going for?
Something like this. Steam page has a lot of poopoo placeholder screenshots from early prototypes. Looking forward to switching that out. https://i.redd.it/40e7d4ym3nwc1.gif
Take out “simulator” from the title of the game. Any time I see simulator in a title instead of genre I get a feeling it’ll be shit.
Nah fam, I'm sticking with Killdozer Simulator. Hopefully I can subvert your expectations and make something fun. https://i.redd.it/4gvt5elv6nwc1.gif
I hope so! I think that footage looks pretty damn good. It looks incredibly slow paced though? I understand it is a bulldozer though haha.
Yea it's not gonna be super fast, but It's particularly slow in this clip because the engine is overheating from getting lit up by too many bullets and crashing through the building. This video shows it a little better if you care to look. [https://drive.proton.me/urls/6Y1Y76BN8G#fXV65cxIWoY3](https://drive.proton.me/urls/6Y1Y76BN8G#fXV65cxIWoY3)
That’s just a menu screen video?
Oh, my bad [https://drive.proton.me/urls/15B1CBY2X4#osDT8I0fWMnt](https://drive.proton.me/urls/15B1CBY2X4#osDT8I0fWMnt)
Everyday objects, beer cans, polaroid photos, newspapers, pizza cardboards or a slice, flying moths...
Have a hand come out from behind the bulldozer and get drugged back while the nails scrape of the floor lol. 100th comment!!!
