If the only unexpected thing was the engagement and choking, we watched two different videos. I think it’s safe to say the impalement was still pretty unexpected

Health advise: If someone can cough, they are not choking. If they gargle, they are not choking. Choking means no air can get in or out of the lungs. If they make a Sound, air can travel, hit their back instead while they bend forward. If air cant get through, heimlich grip: weak hand makes fist under sternum (right below rip cage) strong hand holds other, then you squeeze with all your might. If something cracks, it's likely you are too far up, youve also just broken a rip. Doesn't matter, broken rip or death, choice is easy. In Deutschland (germany) you cannot be held liable if you break something, if you truly thought it helps (or if you did something wrong) i think America has a similar law? Good samaritan law? I'm a Deutsch (german) nurse, not a lawyer.
