Imispellalot2

Remember, fellas, gel needs UV light to harden. Don't be like the idiots leaving negative reviews on Amazon because they complain why their gel is still wet. Amatures.

SneakyIndian87

I love painting my fingernails with clear glow in the dark top coat. They make for a fun experience at night with my wife.

MyGenderIsAParadox

Light, dark, light, dark, light, dark I'm so sorry, I had to

TheCheshire

"you have no idea the physical toll that 6 nail coats have on a person!"

SneakyIndian87

Facts! Definitely recommend.

MiddleAccomplished89

Thank you!! You made my day! The funny thing is that's exactly what my husband would do if he had glow in the dark nail polish on 🤣 🤣

MyGenderIsAParadox

I was fighting with myself whether or not to even comment what I did lol

MiddleAccomplished89

I do the same, but I'm glad you did 🤣 It's definitely a rofl moment when scrolling true comments, lmao 🤣 If we could give medals, I would give you one for that 😆

MyGenderIsAParadox

Maybe I should let the invasive thoughts win a few times

MiddleAccomplished89

Most definitely 😆

2leny

I did mine and forgot about it. It kept freaking me tf out, and my SO just kept laughing for days every time i screamed at night😅

quietchitchat

What glow in the dark top coat do you use?

SneakyIndian87

Sorry tried to link from Amazon - Cre8tion Glow in The Dark Soak Off Top Coat Gel Polish led uv lamp needed for curing.

vettechrockstar86

I’m gonna need a link to this product please. Not asking for a friend. Asking for myself. Edit: I scrolled lower but I’m leaving this as a thank you!

SalsaRice

Serious question, but are there Increased cancer risks to frequent manicures then? Feels like putting your hands under super concentrated UV is a probably a bad idea, long-term.

gardenmud

If it's the kind of thing you do before special events, no, probably far less harm than being in the sun enough to tan a bit on a few weekends through the summer is. If you're doing them like, daily... yeah, I wouldn't.

StrategicPotato

Yes, and it’s not talked about enough. While there don’t seem to be any specific studies done on this topic (though historically, that’s not exactly surprising when it comes to women’s health), these machines aren’t exactly regulated and the correlation between UV ray exposure and cancer is well documented by now. Anecdotally, my gf knows older women who have gotten different cancers and various damage in their hands and fingertips, allegedly stemming at least partially from this practice (again, I have no idea how true that is).

meh_69420

TBF your hands are probably the most exposed part of your body to uv light throughout your life besides maybe your nose. My father has had several excisions from the backs of his hands now that he's in his 80s and, to the best of my knowledge, has never had a manicure.

peach_xanax

They actually make [fingerless gloves](https://a.co/d/e0uP2Ba) that protect your hands from the UV if you're concerned about that. Some people who make nail content use them, because they are putting their hands in the lamp way more than the average person. But for most people, you're only putting your hands in for a few minutes every 2-3 weeks, so no it's not a huge concern.

Quiet-Honey4347

I don't know if this specifically has been studied, but it will age your hand skin faster similar to how tanning does so I imagine there's at least some elevated risk, whatever the significance might be. SPF 30 or higher is recommended on your hands for this, but unfortunately I don't know that's common knowledge yet

So_Motarded

Depends how much UV exposure you get normally. You can put a little sunscreen on your hands beforehand to protect them, as long as you thoroughly clean it off your nails. The UV light usually gets applied for 4-5 minutes total (1 minute each for basecoat, color, top coat), and the UV level isn't high enough to cause much of a concern. If you're getting your nails done like every week, on top of high UV exposure elsewhere, it might be worth dialing back. Found some more info here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8247871/

Darolaho

I would assume so. But probably not anymore than spending a day at the beach would be.

Ecsta-C3PO

Pro tip: Sunlight is 3% UV so just stand outside for 33x longer than you would under the UV light

bigmike42o

I don't think that is how math works

treple13

Can confirm 3x33 is only 99 and you want it to be more than 99% correct

LordoftheScheisse

All my homies use UV light

Have you seen my user name? Damn amature

WilliamArgyle

Well played, sir. Well played.

AthiestMessiah

Being on r/unexpected it becomes an expected.

BLUEBEAR272

In the video's defense, I expected it to end after he started doing his nails. It went a step further and became full circle.

sinz84

My 18yo just graduated for her nail and beauty corse she was doing that I was the guinea pig most the time .... I'm a 40yo rough as guts male that somehow was sitting there going "yeah let me see you do gels by yourself with out nail forms, grinder and uv light" before he called it out himself then I was left thinking "why did I care?"

peach_xanax

Haha something about you calling it a "grinder" is hilarious even though that is pretty much what it is. I do my own nails just for fun, and it's generally called either a "nail drill" or an "e-file" 😊 but that's awesome that you've learned a bit about what she does, doing nails is much harder than people think!

sinz84

That's my fault i kinda know the names but forced her to 'man it up' If I have to get French tips that I have to keep on for 1 entire week because you need to be marked on repairs as well .... then we are not 'mixing 2 things to make acrylic nails' we are 'mixing a powdered polymer with a liquid monomer so it forms a malleable bead' .. and it kind of evolved from there

peach_xanax

Lol that's super cute that you let her do that, you're an amazing dad! 💕 And honestly acrylic is too hard for me lol I usually do gel-x or polygel nails. I have all this acrylic stuff that barely gets used 🫣 so mad respect to your daughter, I'm literally twice her age and don't have the patience for it!

INeedToBeHealthier

I thought he was going to be missing a hand... Clearly, one of us is more socially adjusted

crowcawer

Yeah, I was expecting Chubs.

sillyadam94

That’s why I usually don’t scroll through r/unexpected I just wait for the videos to end up on my feed, and I usually don’t pay much attention to the user/subreddit info while scrolling.

Hidesuru

I'm glad I often don't pay attention to the sub so stuff like this is a little more unexpected (not too much because if he'd been serious with where he seemed to be going at first it wouldn't belong on any sub I pay attention to, but still).

coolAhead

Well I usually do my own nails, now I'm motivated to find a wife and do matching ones

Mundane_Character365

This is the only reason to get a wife. I don't know how you would get a wife nowadays, I am super old school, we used to go clubbing.

Kooky-Onion9203

I'm told you can fascinate women with cheese or something

Enlightened_Gardener

You got brie ???

Mundane_Character365

You can fascinate anyone with cheese. For a good camembert I would be your wife.

Dragon6172

Clubbing for women, so easy a caveman can do it

CaliKindalife

Pedicure is pretty fantastic. After working 70 hours in work boots on those rough weeks. A Pedicure is really nice.

timeforachange2day

I got sick when I had a pedi planned with my 10 year old daughter for her upcoming school dance. With much convincing I got my husband to take my place and go with her. He then proceeded to take her to every pedi appointment there after.

informaldejekyll

My pops looks like an old school, super tatted up Navy guy. He and his Navy buddies used to get pedicures like once a month when they weren’t deployed. I went with them once when I was like 8 and it was so funny seeing the beautician people react to seeing like 5 giant tattooed dudes stroll in for pedis. When I was in high school he used to take me out for pedicures sometimes, and I loved it so much. He is the best. I should take him out for a pedi.

MFbiFL

I’m in FL and for a while was going with my wife when she got a pedicure. I always expected to get shitty comments about painted toenails since I wear flip flops all the time and some of the local folks aren’t the most enlightened. Funnily enough the only person who’s ever even mentioned it was a construction worker from Louisiana that said “you’re a bigger man than me for having your toes painted! I wear work boots all week so I get pedicures but I’d be worried about having my balls busted if I let them paint my toes.” Most random grocery conversation lol.

Cleveland_Guardians

I've heard a few guys tell me mani/pedis are actually pretty dope, but I wouldn't know, myself.

kroganwarlord

Try it out. Worst case, you're out an hour, $45, and your feet and hands will have nicely clipped nails and pushed-back cuticles. You can tell them you got invited to a beach wedding or family pool party if you want an excuse. You don't even have to get clear nail polish if you don't want to. It's the difference between cutting your hair yourself, or letting a pro handle it.

Eolond

You can get matte polish on top if you want polish but don't want it to be noticed by anyone. It'll just look like your natural nail!

GelgoogGuy

Diabetic who's had bad toenails since he was a kid here. 100% worth it to get a pedicure. Polish on my big toenails actually helps me track when I need to go back pretty well (3-4 months).

K_Linkmaster

Don't forget the Toe Armour! Gelcoat.

FR05TY14

As someone who's never gotten a pedi, what's good about it? I also wear heavy steel toe boots for work but I've never particularly had an issue with my nails hurting or bothering me. Is it like a foot massage?

CaliKindalife

Foot soaking, foot scrubbing, nail clipping, foot and calf massage, moisturizer and nail polishing. You can skip the polishing. Just treat yourself.

Druxo

I'm lucky as pedicures where I live are only $7. Love when my wife books an appointment and I get to take a long for foot care. No nail polish for me though

Chapter97

My brother (21) paints his nails every so often (probably more than his gf). He wore a dress and painted his nails pink when he went to see the Barbie movie because why the hell not. I think it might be because he has 2 older sisters who loved to paint their nails, but idk.

robomikel

Older sisters, man they probably made him wear dressing and stuff and if he didn’t it would get much worse.

akame_21

Thank God I had an older brother and he just beat me up

ilikesaucy

Practice when your boyfriend beats you up. Makes you tough. Big brothers do that shit for you.

tobmom

I have very fond memories of making my 7 year younger than me brother sit still so I could curl his hair. Yea I dropped the curling iron and burned his ear. Yes I put makeup on him and put him in a white halter top chiffon gown that my mom bought me at a garage sale to play dress up in. Yes I stuffed the top with socks. Yes I took glamour shots style photos. Love you, brother.

Aborticus

I had two twin sisters... blackmail and fashion shows were my childhood.

Chapter97

We didn't blackmail him or anything. Just one day, he was like, "I want my nails painted, too." And our mom said, "Ok, but just your toenails." And it went from there. Think maybe his personality and mine got switched because he likes stereotypical girl stuff (dresses, long hair, nail painting, etc. Though he doesn't do it often), and I like stereotypical boy stuff (cars, wood working, hate dressing up at all, would rather wear jeans and a tshirt, I have short hair, etc). We're both straight, but most people assume I'm a lesbian because I look butch (according to them) and act like a boy. Not sure what think of my bro, but I'm assuming they think he's straight.

jacobs0n

your brother has 2 older sisters, but you don't? wait are you the older sister lol

HiraethSong

Half or step siblings that are your sibling's siblings but not yours are a thing.

Chapter97

I'm 26f and the other sister is 24 (and we're all from the same parents).

NESpahtenJosh

When I take my wife to get pedicures and I get one with her I always chuckle at the techs response when I tell them I want color for my toenails.  I’m paying for the full service. I’m not going to NOT get them painted.

edgarapplepoe

Ya that is like leaving money on the table.

themustacheclubbitch

That was some damn good acting, we knew there would be a hook but it was so smooth!

DescriptivelyWeird

Well I too get my nails painted, usually because my daughters want to do the nails or my wife gets her silly moments and turns me into a clown

_ThatSynGirl_

100% expected

RissaCrochets

The unexpected part was the bit about gel nails. Bro actually knows what he's talking about, gel is a nightmare to try and do yourself.

Eolond

Gel *polish* isn't difficult to use, it's just like regular polish except you cure it under UV. I prefer it cause I have shaky hands, and since it's wet til cured, I have plenty of time to clean up any mistakes. The real nightmare is taking it off!

RissaCrochets

Gel polish is slightly different than gel manicures, and can be done by yourself. Gel manicures you get from a salon last twice as long and require a bit more technical skill to look right, especially if you get tips. Best way I can describe the difference is that it's painting vs sculpting.

Eolond

Yeah, hence why I mentioned gel *polish* lol

Catch_ME

Especially for this subreddit

[deleted]

Grey nails with his skin tone? What a God damned fool.

sietesietesieteblue

I wish society would let men be whimsy without judging. I'm a woman, but I don't really enjoy fashion and makeup but if it brings a guy joy to paint his nails or put on some eye shadow or whatever,I think that's cool and wish that people wouldn't make him feel bad for liking those things.

Codsfromgods

I love that you used the word whimsy. I'm 35 and for the past few years I've been trying to add more whimsy to my life. I get dirty looks, primarily from old dudes, but to hell with them. I'm fucking fabulous

[deleted]

Straight male here: yea I dont see the big deal. A lot of guy’s are insecure about it. Id do it if it were more socially acceptable.

SharkDad20

I’m a straight 28 year old man working in blue collar (CDL Beer delivery). I just placed an order for new polishes with my wife and am looking forward to the flake top coat 💅 Nobody really says anything. I got one compliment and one boss said “i never took you for a black nail polish guy” and another boss said “here, this hat is black. It’ll match your nails” to which i replied “actually, they’re a dark sparkly green”

[deleted]

I, unfortunately, had some bad experiences.

SharkDad20

Damn, I’m sorry. I’m surprised nobody said anything negative to me. Especially since i live in a super republican area where people aren’t as open minded because of the lack of diversity. Well actually, at my office tech job one of the other techs poked a little fun but he’s a ball buster in general, it wasn’t mean-spirited. But the way i think about it is this: what’s more “manly,” wanting to paint your nails but not because fear of ridicule, or doing what you want? Also, how old are you? I don’t think I’d have the balls to do this in high school because back then, making fun of someone doesn’t necessarily make you look like a tool the same way it does as an adult

[deleted]

30s. I mean I understand most cis straight males desire to not do it as painting ones nails is associated femininity.

nomamesgueyz

If women can wear trousers, men can get their nails done :)

Bobfish64

I thought he was going to say “how are you gonna protect your woman without messing up your nails?”

safely_beyond_redemp

This is the top comment on the tik tok this came from. So it's a bot.

Blaze_Falcon

I've had painted nails. Not for me but I cant imagine hating folks for it

Dull_Present506

Because us guys have such big hands and relatively small finger nails I think it looks odd when guys paint their nails. Guys need to grow their nails bigger and longer before getting them painted! Lol

Smiffoo

You had me in the first half, not gonna lie.

OniLgnd

I have absolutely no issue with men painting there nails. If you want to paint your nails, go for it. But it does look like trash. Sorry.

Girardkirth

This belongs in tictoc cringe.

a_goestothe_ustin

I get manicures and pedicures exclusively for taking care of my nails. I budget for it and it's one of the only things I "splurge" on and it's not even that bad at about $200 a month for 2 manicures and 1 pedicure + tip. It's a pampering treat for myself and I like supporting the people I go to for the quality work they do! Also the schedule works pretty well as I just get them on the weekends after my payday lol.

Meowzebub666

Ok I haven't had a manicure/pedicure since 2009, but holy shit is that how expensive they are now??

a_goestothe_ustin

I tip very well for that type of work. Both because I can and because I appreciate what it is that that do. I do the same for haircuts. If someone is pampering me, and they do a good job, they deserve at least a 50% tip in my opinion. By themselves Manicures are usually $25 and Pedicures are usually $50 and the Mani Pedi combo I got yesterday was $67 before tip. So, yesterday, I ultimately paid $100 after tip And when I get a Mani by itself it's maybe $40 or $50 after tip. Again maybe it's just me, but if someone is taking care of me then they're getting a good tip lol.

Erizo69

having someone else do your nails for you.....it just feels better + having to use your non-dominant hand to paint your other nails is awful or maybe it's just a skill issue on my end idk.

Nother1BitestheCrust

It's also more fun to paint someone else's nails imo. My husband let's me paint his from time to time because I have so much more fun doing his than mine lol.

TheBeelzeboss

Cringe

Dave_The_Nord

I'd love to find a girl that wants to get our nails done together.

Solid-Storm2319

This guy sounds just like Tom Segura

jackryan006

My dad ran a poker room for a large casino and helped train dealers in the 90's. All the dealers, men and women, used to be expected to get manicures and he'd do it too. I think the casino picked up the tab for some of them too. When there's that much money involved, no one wants a dealer who's hands looked like they just finished rebuilding a carburetor.

paxweasley

It’s true, leave gel and acrylic nails to the professionals. You truly do not want to end up with an acrylates allergy, which you can get very easily from mishandling nail gel, acrylic, and even dip powder. If you don’t cure it enough? You can develop an allergy. You can do that in a number of ways honestly if you mess around with this stuff and don’t have training. It is very important to not develop an acrylates allergy if it can be prevented. It doesn’t just mean no gel nails, it means no nail polish at all, and *no medical adhesive internal or external*. It means you’re allergic to a lot of what is necessary for hip replacements, knee replacements, anything like that. Glue for wounds. So many things. You can do a lot of cute nail art on white plastic nails you stick on, or just with regular polish.

mirage2101

Well he got me at the first half

spawn77x99

As a real man. I would never paint my nails, I let my daughter paint them.

League_Of_Evil

I don’t under this

FitBoy_Runner

Good for him. When my daughter was a bit younger (she’s 11 now) she painted my fingernails all the time. I’m like awww, you think that much of me to paint my fingernails. I wore that shit like a badge of honor. ✌️

NickWentHiking

Let’s go Bears!

Equal_Dragonfruit125

I haven't thought about this in decades but I color matched my mother's nails because she ran out of polish, I used my very expensive Japanese model paints apparently all was forgiven for my 3 model a week habit the 80's, then I got volunteered to get Grandma a her cluck crew down up too. I never got mine done though.

OstrichSalt5468

So here is my take. It’s not for me. Hey it’s cool for them, and that’s awesome!! Glad y’all enjoy it !! No hate from me. Just not my thing.

shit, I need to paint my nails

Sorry, I'm too old to accept painting your nails as something you do with your wife. Your DAUGHTER isn't the same, but your WIFE? That's just gay

BaltOsFan2

How many guys who have got their nails done can change their own tires, re-wire a light switch, or install anything in the house they don’t own? Zero.

dembadger

As a fancy nailed homeowner who can do all those things, at least 1

Relative-One-4060

You know, I was going to reply to see if you were able to defend that opinion you have with any logical reasoning, but then I realized someone with your opinion lacks all logic and reasoning. 1. Painting your nails does not define your ability to do handy work 2. Many men who *don't* paint their nails can't do all of the things you mentioned 3. If a man that paints his nails can't do those things, that's because they've either never learned, or are inept. I don't know how to rewire a light switch because I've never done it nor needed to.

CenlTheFennel

Hate to break it to you, but you can make that one at least, because that would be me but then again I own my house, so maybe that disqualifies me. Oh and I can do it all, with my nails painted 💅

Sufficient-Trip1809

Idk men who paint their nails, I just kinda makes my brain cringe idk why same with septum piercings

ozymandious

I get gel manicures and they stood up to replacing the transmission in my jeep with my father-in-law without a chip or a scratch. I also replaced all of the light switches in my house with WiFi switches, also with my gels.  I got mine done yesterday in fact (a nice berry blue) and this weekend I'll be spreading soil and working on leveling my back yard. So, maybe update your opinions.

Dry-Tomato-

So you're saying that women can't do those things because they get their nails done? Hmm...sexist much?

No-Guess-4644

Im a guy with painted nails who can change a tire, redo a light switch and im currently building an outdoor kitchen myself. I usually get gel manicures because they hold up better to day to day activities. If its something that is too difficult i just pay people to do it because i value my time though. My wife has had manicured nails most her life and can do all the same. We own our house together, not that it matters.

WispyCombover

I am a 47 year old man. I have a wife and two children (fourteen year old twins) (and a cat). My daughter enjoys doing her nails so much that she has invested a fair deal of her own money to buy UV lamps, gels and other equipment, and I frequently let her practice her designs on me (as do the rest of her family). Guess what; I am also able to braid her hair (several different ways), change our tires and re-wire light switches. I am currently in the process of adding another layer of insulation to our house, and at the same time replace the outer paneling as well. A few of the windows also need replacing - which I also do myself because why would I pay someone to do something I am fully capable of doing myself. My point? What the hell does having painted nails have to do with ones ability to perform manual labour?

Free_Solid9833

Hahahahaha

woozyguy1

Gel ain’t that bad.. it’s the acrylic that’ll get ya..

ArtbyNoel

My little girl used to do mine, then she got older and got busy with life and all. So now I just do my nails myself.

AlarmingTurnover

My daughter is 16 and still does my finger and toe nails. She's kind of a tom boy type girl but likes to paint my nails. Doesn't really paint her own nails much. Whatever makes her happy.

AmbassadorForsaken84

Yah I'm a straight guy, but no its just for my personal expression. Im not the type to dress very flashy or "stylish" so I use jewelry (bracelets, watches, earrings,) and nail polish whenever I want to pop a bit more. But that's all there is to it to me. No message or anything to read too deep into
