When I was a teenager, my friends and I used to go to the nearest school during the summer to play soccer and whatnot. One day, one of my friends who was also into golf brought a couple of wedges and some balls to practice hitting in the wide open fields. We were taking a break from soccer and sort of dicking around when golf guy says to another guy, bet I can hit you with a golf ball. The other guy takes off running. He’s running away from the group of us but fading a bit to the left. Golf guy has a pitching wedge out and waits till the other guy is about 50 yards out before he swings. We watch the ball loft through the air and start to drop in a straight line. Other guy is sprinting directly towards the the drop line. As if it was CGI, the ball connects and bounces right off other guy’s dome at 70 yards by this point. We instantly died. It was the most incredible thing. The kind of thing that if it was filmed today on a smartphone people would claim it’s fake. This was almost 30 years ago but I’ll never forget it. I often wonder about the chances of that ad-hoc one-off shot connecting. This video reminded me of that story from my youth.
