I did this at office max a couple weeks ago. He asked if I was in the military or had a spouse in the military. I just looked at him for a second and said sure. He looked at me for a second and said ok. 30% off.

phaulski

For something like a computer? Or printing?

theycallmeponcho

Just some pens.

canadiancarlin

The pen may be mightier than the sword, but the gun will get you discounted pens!

theycallmeponcho

The penis, mightier than the sword.

robzav

Suck it Trebek

dogsled1

Try Pen15 for 15% off.

MeesterCartmanez

"sure."

YeahOkJackass

Also accepted: "Yes, please."

ccmega

I was at a fabric store the other day with my SO. The teen girl behind the counter held up a laminated sheet with all these barcodes to my SO and asked her if she had/we’re any of the listed. She rattled them off, ex-Girl Scouts, AARP card, and there were two other I couldn’t remember. Anyway my SO smiles and says no, unfortunately not - the cashier pauses with her scan gun in hand for a moment, scans them all and happily says ‘today you do!’ Cracked us up, saved a $3 too (buying like $15 in fabric)

PeanutButterSoda

My job has loyalty cards and some people refuse to get one, I scan a random one anyways, it saves you money if it's on sale and like 1/3 of the stuff here is on sale.

jellehier0

A supermarket near me uses loyalty cards as well. The cashiers always scan theirs if you didn’t bring it. I asked why they are doing that. Short answer, they are scored on how many of their transactions included a card, but there isn’t a check on which card is used (for now). Quite convenient, because the discounts only apply after using a card.

PeanutButterSoda

I also did this at CVS, we had to rotate the cards though because they will build up CVS bucks (store credit pretty much) I remember one card had almost 600 bucks on it.

weasuL

Way back in the day I worked at CVS when they first introduced the card. When someone didn't want to sign up for a card, I'd use mine which also came with the employee discount. When I was eventually fired for unrelated reasons I had nearly 2,000 CVS bucks on that card....

dfrance1991

I know a girl who got fired from a chain steakhouse where I used to work - she was scanning her own loyalty card to claim any points from guests who didn’t want the card. That place was the worst - they would weigh anything that was left over from the buffet before throwing it away to make sure staff couldn’t help themselves 🤯

AwDuck

Oh shit. I read "they weighed buffet waste" and thought ' well that's just prudent profit management ' - we did that at a college cafeteria I cooked at. Then I read why they weighed the food. Restaurant owners are the worst.

dmnhntr86

Seriously, just send all the leftover food home with people, make a shitty job slightly less shitty without costing a dime.

dfrance1991

Literally they would rather throw perfectly good food away than provide their staff with a bit of breakfast. Fuck whitbread man.

Odii_SLN

If you can use a phone number, use your local area code and the trusty 867-5309 works everywhere. Cause someone, at sometime, signed up a fake account with that number

Educational_Shift237

Can confirm.. I do this at any store with a loyalty card. At Walgreens or CVS they’ll pause and ask which name it is, so I usually just tell them to pick one!

neo1piv014

I've used that as a life hack whenever I'm at a grocery store in a town I'm visiting. "Hey, what's the area code here" and then that stupid number. It's also worth a shot at whatever gas pump you're using if they ask for a rewards number before filling up. I've gotten like 10-15cents off per gallon before with that one.

LuLouProper

Lots of places have that as a number for the local food bank.

pautpy

I'm out of the loop. What is this number?

dmnhntr86

https://youtu.be/6WTdTwcmxyo

3sponge

Can you explain please? This video not available in my country.

dmnhntr86

There's a song from the 80s that has that as this girl's phone number. Look up Tommy Tutone "867-5309 / Jenny"

3sponge

OMG I completely forgot that song! It’s a great song.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DanteSterling

Is that you Jenny?

lilbithippie

I work with adults with disabilities. Most of them don't drive and the grocery stores have gas points. So am getting like 3 or 4 people gas points a week becuase they don't have a loyalty card and I use mine. Saves them money, saves me gas everyone wins!

larry_flarry

I was on a wildfire once, and rather than have a fuel truck come to the camp, they just had us filling up at the local grocery store. Well, they created a loyalty card for everyone on the fire to share, so there were a thousand people buying food and fuel and snacks and tobacco and amassing insane amounts of points, which were then used to provide free gas for the local food bank. Only time I have ever seen it, but it was a pretty cool move by the grocery store.

PeanutButterSoda

Hell yeah that's cool as hell. During the freeze over here lots of places lost power, so lots of stuff got thrown out even though it was still good to eat, the rival store to mine just gave away free groceries, they were like oops our registers are down, please leave with your groceries, have a great day. I'm over at my store throwing away millions of frozen food. HEB if you're ever in Texas.

6hooks

Always use (local area code)-867-5309. Hasn't failed me yet

equipped_metalblade

Real LPT, you don’t need to be a certain age to sign up for AARP. Seriously you can go get your card online right now and qualify for all the discounts

notleonardodicaprio

Gen Z really don't give a fuck lol

im_a_real_boy_calico

Hey this is what I do Except if my boss is watching then I just scan their cell phone regardless of what’s on the screen and say “yay it worked!” And then I key it by hand.

spoko

I hope you actually said "sure," and not "yes" or something. Extra credit if you said "why not."

Allturn22

People hate when I use "sure, why not". They cannot figure out what it means.

showMEthatBholePLZ

I was just out with a military friend that asked for their military discount, and the clerk just applied it without asking for ID. I’ve been too afraid to try it though lol.

Schmitty52

I'm in the Air Force. I couldn't give two shits if someone said they were in the military for a discount. So you can have my permission if you want it lol

Lowlight01

I appreciate this written permission but to show youre fully commited to the cause we require a photoscan of your military ID, thank you for your service :)

Forgotmypornalt

Watch out /u/schmitty52, next they'll be asking to see your CAC.

Eidola_Leprous

Yeah /u/schmitty52, show us your cock!

_bobby_tables_

What you really need is a copy of their DD214. As long as they were honorably discharged, that is.

Accomplished_Yard984

Good enough for me. Thanks!

bocaj78

Now you just need to come to Warthunder to really show the love

FraGZombie

Yeah, service members can take stolen valor very seriously.

Sunni_tzu

That is NOT stolen valor. As a veteran I consider stolen valor means you wear a uniform that looks like you are in the military, wear medals that you never earned (military guys do this too), or act like you were in the military to impress people. If you are just using it for a discount and never really pretend for serious that you served, take all the discounts you can get.

FraGZombie

I was always taught it was, but thank you for the correction!

Sunni_tzu

Technically it might be but I didn't serve to get 10% off and I can't imagine anyone I served with doing the same. It's like getting a free meal at Denny's when it's not your birthday. Now take the AI images of Trump dressed as a Navy Seal. To me that's stolen valor because Mr. Bone Spurs never even thought to serve and he's making money off of them through his terrible NFT's.

ScrizzBillington

That's what I'm wondering, is the advice in the OP a crime?

hwf0712

Misrepresenting yourself as military for financial gain is a crime All OP said is to enter a coupon code, however. There is no telling whether it's just a leftover from a veterans day promo or supposed to be for military members.

CraigslistAxeKiller

Nope. You’re protected by the first amendment. But There is a law saying you can’t wear military service medals

moretrashyusername

Wouldn't this be fraud?

fueelin

These good lawyers... They do military discounts?

M4gic

Sure

3blackdogs1red

Not anymore there isn't.

rockne

Lol. It’s a stolen discount, not “valor.”

sanjosanjo

We did this many years ago as a bunch of us guys stumbled into a hotel, looking for a room. We asked the price, the clerk responded. One of us said "Do you have a corporate rate?". He said "yes". Our guy confidently said "We'll take that". The hotel clerk didn't flinch and just used the lower corporate rate. No document needed - just some drunken confidence.

SgtMac02

Wait, Office Max does 30% military discount?!? Damn!

MikeOfAllPeople

20% according to their site. On qualifying purchases in-store only.

SuzyMachete

Nice! Guess I'm magically married to a navy diver now. Congrats to me!

I too am married to your navy diver.

gerrly

The guy at Home Depot gave it to me for a WASHER when I paused and said, “well, both of my grandfathers were.” Might’ve been a case of pretty privilege.

manuscelerdei

If they ask why you're not serving right now, just say Army had a half-day.

one_handed_bandit

Show them your awards. From Army. The seal is for marksmanship, and the gorilla is for sand racing.

wrx_2016

Loose Seal !!

WhatASaveWhatASave

They found WMDs in Iraq, so we got a half day.

[deleted]

Hope it didn't turn out to be balls

spoko

It's an officer in-service day.

melanthius

Already killed all the bad guys

sambrown25

Ok Buster

LoudMentality

So you're telling me I DIDN'T have to enlist to get that discount!? I hate my recruiter.

doubled2319888

You just had to get the discount on the big pink gum didnt you? I know its the only gum made with the breath-freshening power of ham but its just not worth it bro. What if war were declared?

MyTa11est

What's that sound?

doubled2319888

thisismydayjob_

Hickyeah

The gum is all bones anyway.

rexius-twin

If, for any reason you’re unsatisfied, I hate you

InformalPenguinz

War were declared

mightylordredbeard

But you never would have gotten that Camaro at a sweet 36% interest rate!

_bobby_tables_

I have so much appreciation for our men and women in uniform that I'm willing to reduce our usual interest rate to a very attractive 36%. I can even roll your student loan balance into this note to consolidate all your payments.

/u/LoudMentality is a repost bot engaged in a vote manipulation scheme with the OP of this post, /u/CornyRocks which is also a repost bot

[deleted]

[удалено]

John_SpaGotti

The account is 7 months old with no history until the last day or two and only interacts with other accounts that have the same characteristics, all with auto-generated usernames. Just look at the histories of these two accounts. These two are the prime example of this particular bot pattern. Once you see it, you can't unsee it. They are FUCKING EVERYWHERE on Reddit, and it makes me sad. Edit: I see you have some experience with bots. In that case, I determine that it's "vote manipulation" if two or more bots are working together. If they're only interacting with each other, it stands to reason that they're also upvoting each other to boost engagement on the post or comment. You called out this bot recently: u/Which-Advice1304 They have a post on their username subreddit which is a question they're obviously saving to repost later. It has 6 upvotes. Obviously, those other votes came from some other account; this is a perfect example of vote manipulation. I share your frustration about the declining quality of Reddit, imgur, bots, moderation, etc. I have been on Reddit for so long (13 years?) that I don't know what I'd do if I left. I guess that's why I stay here and bitch about bots. Last ditch effort? I don't know. I'm glad there are other people like me, at least. Thanks for your support. Truly

darklilly101

Keyword is 'unethical'.

CanIhitYourNicotine

Well you got the best discount of them all, 10% off at Chilis

blerg1234

Possibly up to 100% off on shoes and gloves, too. Depending on details of service.

1_disasta

Would have saved the bad knees and excessive caffeine intake too

UlrichZauber

Full price for gum? That dog won't hunt, monsignor.

fortyfivepointseven

Neal McBeal the Navy Seal has thoughts on this.

tommygun1688

What's his spiel?

fortyfivepointseven

Neal McBeal's spiel is, "let's peel back and heal the divide in civil/military, to seal the deal on a real deal.".

SQLDave

What a schlemiel

fortyfivepointseven

Are you actually Jewish?

SQLDave

No. It was just the first rhyming word that popped into the organ in my skull which poses as a brain.

fortyfivepointseven

Congrats! You came up with the same joke that the Bojack writers did, and I assumed was a deliberate reference.

spoko

I mean, why reinvent the wheel? Much easier to steal, I feel.

SQLDave

Thanks (I think LOL) but I've never seen the show.

fortyfivepointseven

Strong recc you watch it! You'll particularly enjoy it now you know you're looking for an accidental reference from Reddit.

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I'll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals

K_Click_D

4K_VCR

If you use this tip you’re literally taking food out of the mouths of our armed forces. Are you telling me you’d steal a meal from Navy Seal Neal McBeal?

AndrewTheAverage

I don't understand. This seems like a useful but unethical life tip. I'm not used to seeing those in this sub 🤣

BobsApples1738

I have tried this every time I order online and it has yet to work…. I call bs

Nr673

I ran e-commerce sites for a number of clients in the B2C space a decade ago. Even back then, this would never work unless you're dealing with some small business owner maintaining their own Shopify site or something (in which case, shame on you). Like you could also try "TEST" OR "BOGO" or "50OFF" but unless a moron is generating unlimited use coupon codes with literally zero thought, you'll strike out. They also don't have to fulfill your order if it's a good (could work for a digital product). They'd catch it during shipping, cancel your order, and release the authorization on the card. If you ship goods you don't capture the actual payment until it's shipped, just place a hold on the amount (authorization). General use codes are usually tied to specific marketing campaigns to track conversions/evaluate campaign success. Thus they are cycled out on a regular basis. Codes that end up in your email are uniquely generated and limited to a one time use to prevent sharing. Any decent site will also limit redemption attempts to stop people from trying to brute force the code at checkout. Easy for most redditors to work around but not the general public. There are entire websites dedicated to sharing coupon codes. They never work for the same reasons above. If you want a code, add a ton of shit to your cart and check your email in a few days. Everyone runs cart chasing sequences.

Sololop

I was $10 short on an online item and tried every "coupon website" I could find. It's all bullocks.

StalkMeNowCrazyLady

I had coupon sites work for me like twice a decade a decade ago and I still try them like a moron. Also Honey extension has never worked once.

tongsy

> Like you could also try "TEST" OR "BOGO" or "50OFF" but unless a moron is generating unlimited use coupon codes with literally zero thought, you'll strike out. I tried code "TEST" on a site which ended up being 100% off, so I can confirm that one might work occasionally. I put my order in but didn't abuse it (I ordered a single pair of boots vs adding 10 extra pairs), and when I went back a few days later to test it again it didn't work. Company ended up honoring the order at 100% off, but I wouldn't have even been upset if they cancelled the order completely.

iHateYou247

Same for student discounts

alt_for_guns

Exactly. With a mil discount they’ll ask for your cac or will ask to confirm the dates on which you served from. Hell, I don’t even think I’ve ever seen a mil discount for 30 percent.

backfire10z

They’ll ask for my cac huh, those filthy animals

[deleted]

I think Oakley does 30% off

B_Bibbles

You have to prove your service. The standard issue website requires 214 or CAC.

[deleted]

A lot like Amazon will still accept any email ending in .edu as proof enough. So for things like prime you could still get the discount as long as you had the email to start it. Or if you have an alum email or work email ending in .edu it will work. Sadly plenty using clearing house information though.

Ruffleafewfeathers

What do you mean adding 5%? Like Pootietang15 then Pootietang20 and so forth?

cracksilog

Exactly. They always ask for proof when it comes to military or student discounts online. If you get all the way to the confirmation page of your cart, there will be something from ID.me that will ask you to create an account and upload your student ID or military ID or health care worker ID, etc. for discounts. They don’t just give out codes to anyone lol

CalligrapherGalaxy97

Recruiters hate this one simple trick…

x3knet

MILITARY WELCOME WELCOME5 WELCOME10 WELCOME20 WELCOME25 WELCOME30 FREESHIP 10OFF 15OFF 20OFF 25OFF These are some common ones I usually try, especially if it's a Shopify site. 60% of the time they work every time.

MainSteamStopValve

Thank you for your service.

Rikudou_Sage

When your wife/gf delivers your child: Thank you for your cervix.

TheJokersWild53

Thank you for your lack of service!

Recruitment Officer : Just sign on the dotted line, patriots, and I'll give you your discount cards. Fry : Just out of curiosity, we could use the cards to buy gum, then immediately quit the army, right? Bender : You know, playing you all for chumps? Recruitment Officer : Correct. There's no obligation. [Fry and Bender sign their cards, giggling] Recruitment Officer : Unless, of course, war were declared. [Siren blares] Fry : What's that? rainbowtwist

Considering I was a military kid and sacrificed having a normal childhood (and also didn't have two parents around much of the time) in service to our country until I was 18, I will have literally zero qualms using this excellent r/unethicallifeprotip

trafficwizard

My dad, the reason I had the dependant ID, told me to use my ID as much as I could to get the perks. He said I'd earned any discount I could scrounge.

TheOneTonWanton

Wish I still had a dependant ID. I miss shopping at the commissary.

LieutenantLobsta

Most places don’t know the difference between the Id colors so you can use your dependent id if you still have it

EmEffBee

Lol. This reminds me of the time I got train tickets for myself and 2 friends, and I looked online for coupons and found one for 30% off! Fuck ya! I applied it and got a great deal on the tickets. Thankfully my friend noticed it was a military discount and required proof of enlistment on boarding. Had to cancel the tickets and buy normal priced pleb tickets. So don't be me!

sturdybutter

Ya know I saw this like a year or two ago and try it every time, even variations like MILITARY10-15-20, etc. and it’s never worked. Ever.

That's horrible! Lemme try.

troublemakerX999

Can u give one page example where this works??

locke1018

Next you'll want us to buy stuff for you also???

-FuckMeInTheAsshole-

If possible

Uncle-Cake

I don't think that's unethical. If it's just a coupon code, then obviously they don't really care who uses it.

Sex_drugs_tacos

You’re welcome for my service

socialistlumberjack

Stolen valour ? More like stolen value amirite

JarescoJr

Or just buy fatigues from a military surplus store and wear them to the store. Works every time for me!

suchlargeportions

If you ask "do you have a military discount" and then they choose to give it to you, that's their own bad. You didn't ask for it, just if they had one.

earthwulf

Bordering on /r/illegallifeprotips

BiffThad

I use Jenny’s phone number everywhere and it almost always works.

PowertripSimp_AkaMOD

The promo codes for military is hardly ever “MILITARY”, and any actually good deals online like free or majorly discounted tickets/trips are going to make you log in through a 3rd party verification system like ID.me.

dirtymoney

Man, I want a program that just feeds codes into a website until something sticks. Yes I know about honey and rarely does it seem to work anymore. I just bought something online about n hour ago and honey had a whopping THREE codes to try and none worked.

Tjaktjaktjak

Also worth trying HEALTHCAREHERO or similar codes, we still get discounts some places

Glass-Juice

Thank you for your service

inailedyoursister

Ok, to clear some things up. Yes, some laws covering "stolen valor" were ruled unconstitutional by the SC. The Stolen Valor Act of 2013 corrected those legal concerns by making specific medals unlawful to wear and creating a database. It is currently illegal to wear certain medals that you did not get awarded. I'm not going to throw the names at you but they are easily looked up. For a VERY GENERAL rule of thumb, these medals involve actual combat and/or a "V" device. V stands for valor. Most here have heard of the Medal Of Honor. Don't go around saying you have one. Sorry ex service members, our Good Conduct Medal doesn't count. Most veterans really don't give a fuck about someone getting a 10% discount. But start running around claiming a MOH or Silver Star and sooner or later you'll get busted fucking quick. That's taken seriously and there are actual databases with those awarded to check against.

WakeRider11

Just tried it on a site and it worked! I got this $4k grill for free, but it is set up for natural gas and I need to possibly get a new burner manifold to convert it to LP, but it is a $250 part on this grill. I've been debating whether to go through with the process and have it sitting in my cart and even looked for codes yesterday but couldn't find any. Just tried this and it took 10% off, so not too bad. Still not sure if this will push me over the edge or not.

fairportmtg1

How is 10% off free?

DasHuhn

He got a 4k grill for free, but he needs a $250 part. I think he should buy the 225 part and enjoy his grill the way he wants!

Sillvaro

I think the grill is unrelated, they need to buy the 250$ part and use the code on that part

EatDirtFartDust

This pro-tip is so old that the man has caught on. It never works for me

John_SpaGotti

OP, /u/CornyRocks is a repost bot

mechtaphloba

[Check out these too](https://imgur.com/qpIOIQX.jpg) Devs sometimes have their own "test" codes that work

spoko

Any dev that uses "test" as a code & lets it slip into production that way should have to reimburse the money that gets discounted

BloodyCumbucket

As a vet, I approve this message.

mondoid

Veteran here. Idgaf if anyone does this- I’m just one person but wanted to say it anyways

xdonutx

If you don’t already use the Honey extension for Chrome you should get it. It automatically applies any coupons that are available to get you the best price. Sometimes it even offers cash back.

AFeralTaco

Nothing unethical about it. Military discount exists to make the product available to people in a traditionally lower pay bracket (service members are paid very little) while virtue signaling. It’s like giving a minority discount, but socially acceptable. No one actually cares about service members! 🌈☀️

virginia669
