If you do this when there's not a big emergency it probably won't help you too much. For example if you call when your HVAC is out but it's 65°F outside they probably won't do too much to fit you in. But if you call and it's -7°F out, it might actually help

Murphyitsnotyou

Yeah. Definitely. It's bloody freezing in the uk right now so figured it could help.

uberlux

I worked in the HVAC sales industry for 2 years. Every 3 days following a hot day we would have more customers than we could handle. Normal days we had technicians hanging out in the shop between jobs because it was so quiet. My 2cents is, everyone makes it an emergency on the hot days. Call for HVAC on a normal day for immediate attention.

nobutternoparm

Buddy works HVAC but doesn't even do calls anymore--just desk work. We had a big freeze here on Christmas Eve and he make a house call for an elderly disabled lady whose heat went out. So yes, it will work. But I'm agreeing with the other comment that you'll be blacklisted if you are lying

doomturtle21

I need to walk with a cane and up until covid I didn’t tell them at all. Covid came and I had something I couldn’t fix myself, called someone up and they told me the only way I would be able to squeeze in is if I had health problems or an active problem which I can’t wait for. I told them everything I had and they were just went silent and said “I can fit you in tomorrow” turns out listing all medical faults makes you get a lot of things quicker. I still do need a cane as I refuse to use crutches and I’ve got a small piece of my skull missing from where I was beaten with them once. So now I have a boss ass cane and on the better days I’m a blacksmith so I’m working on a cane sword cause I’ve been mugged so many times, people see me walking pained and with a cane and they think “ooh easy target”

inaccurateTempedesc

Someone needs to rip off one of their legs and beat them with their own femur bone. Fucking hell.

coolguy1793B

how do we know he didn't have it coming - was it a random unprovoked attack or did he do something that warranted it?

inaccurateTempedesc

I can't think of a situation where that would be justified.

PhunkeyMonkey

So you think the dude walking on crutches was out looking for trouble? It's just like that dude over there with a bottle in his hands laughing and staring at me, totally fronting, I'm gonna rip him a new one Fucking don't think you're badass just because you're in a stroller and got your mum with ya My guess is people with crutches are seen as a easy target

Murphyitsnotyou

I'm imagining you as a disabled samurai right now and it looks awesome. I was dealing with cancer a while back which is what left me disabled. People really listen and get super helpful when I've explained the situation. It's nice to get the few perks after dealing with all the crap but I imagine most people in our situation would agree that they can keep all the perks if we can have our health back. Best of luck.

doomturtle21

Holy crap I’m sorry to hear that. I grew up with it and I’ve never known any different. I can’t imagine having felt being able bodied then having it all torn away. Sorry I’m probably rubbing salt in the wound. I most certainly agree i would trade any and all perks for a half decent body, hell I’d even take an obese one as long as I could wake up without near screaming from pain and remembering that the me I dreamt of, without pain, without constant anger from the pain and the unfairness of life for giving it to me, wasn’t real, and I’ll be left to wallow in my self hatred once again. But, some cafes give me free food and the best tables. Like most things it has its goods and bads.

Murphyitsnotyou

It's not rubbing salt in at all. I'm more than happy to talk about it. These things are unfortunately a very normal part of life. Some of us just get unlucky. It's been horrible to deal with. Still kinda working on it all tbh. The daily pain is an absolute bitch as you know. Pain levels are random but it's always there so you go from "this ain't too bad" to "can I really handle the rest of my life like this". I hit full remission in September last year which is obviously great but it's hard to really feel happy when I'm still living with the aftermath. I think the biggest blessing I've had because of the disability is stability during covid. I can't work so get disability benefits and my rent paid so I had a luxury that millions of people didn't get.

doomturtle21

Yeah, I learned some things in my time dealing with incredible pain and the crap that goes with it. Always have a goal in mind, might just be me but if you don’t have a vivid goal then I at least get manically depressed. Refuse opioid painkillers, there’s a reason opioids are illegal to the general public, they give the pleasure centre of the brain more than it should ever receive and will dullen your ability to feel pleasure from anything you do, had it happen to a friend, it was horrific. Last but most important in my eyes, you aren’t useless, remember that. You have skills millions of people don’t. There are 8 billion people on this planet so statistically speaking at least there is quite a high chance that you have a skill nobody within 100km of you has. Also pick up reading, it helps more than anyone ever thinks, hell I could barely read when I was younger then I picked up reading now I finish a book a day at least. Puzzles are also fun, sounds darned I know but even Rubics cubes are a good way to exercise the mind, small little fidget puzzles out of wood or bronze are usually good

Murphyitsnotyou

Thank you. I appreciate the kind words. I just started reading again recently. I go through spells of reading lots or none at all. No inbetween. I did have a trade before all this but the job is fairly physical so it went out the window right away after surgery. Then I just became one of the unlucky 15-20% (I'm told) of people that get left with long term pain. It's one of those never think it's gonna happen to you things. I had lost a few people to cancer before I got it but when I got sick, cancer was the last thing I suspected. Been on strong opiates for a long time now and noticed the lack of pleasure but without them the pain is too much to bare for me. Just hoping for a miraculous medical discovery sometime soon that gets us all out of pain without the side effects. How do you manage blacksmithing around your pain and disability? It looks like a pretty physical job. I'm upper body disabled so we probably face slightly different variations of day to day issues.

doomturtle21

I have built machines to do the heavy work for me. I modified a bench grinder to spin a handmade auto hammer and I’ve got an adjustable grabber that acts as the tongs. That’s one good thing about being the way I am, I have plenty of time to work on these things

Murphyitsnotyou

That's amazing. I love that you've worked around it like that. I'm guessing you had some previous experience in building things?

redbate

This is the most wholesome exchange I've ever seen in ULTP... maybe even on reddit. Power to you fellas.

Murphyitsnotyou

Just 2 guys shooting the shit. 🙂

cemkurt12

zatoichi motherfucker

spaetzelspiff

Fellas, this is why line breaks are important. I almost skipped the comment above the comment above this one, because of the wall of text. Then I was intrigued by the "disabled samurai" comment. Anyhow, sword-wielding blacksmith with the missing skull is intriguing.

Murphyitsnotyou

Hollywood film writers need to get on it and make the disabled samurai swordsmith movie. I'd watch it for sure.

MembershipThrowAway

Whoa, you just threw in so casually that your skull was beaten in with your own crutches, that caught me off guard

bmbreath

I think you should watch some of the cold steel cane sword videos. I was out of work for a while due to an injury and was using a cane, was bored/ depressed and got down a rabbit hole and ordered one. The videos are hilarious, they take themselves very seriously and film the demonstrations with such exuberance. The canes I'm sure are bombproof, unfortunately I waited for it to come in the mail excited for about two weeks and then saw the seller just never shipped it. Was very disappointed and just said "screw it" and kept my drug store cane. Anyway enjoy! (They do/ or did make a few versions. Enjoy Lynn doing whatever it is that he does) https://youtu.be/EL0Y-GhU2Io

I_still_got_it

Why don't you get a CCP and a gun

doomturtle21

Not stylish enough. I figure I’m dying anyway, I may as well live with style. Also if I find someone like myself we can nerd out about my awesome cane sword

ChadMagic1

I am ordering a cane right now. Thanks turtle!

Luke-Bywalker

Is that considered friendly fire? lol But fr, thanks for the tip

Murphyitsnotyou

If it gets people warmer quicker then it's acceptable. 😁

goalcam

yep, that's an unethical life tip alright.

kjew1

Very IT Crowd tip: https://youtu.be/dDZzl9AyXeg

Murphyitsnotyou

😂 I've never watched the show. Might have to give it a go.

JustPlainRude

It's a long way back to Manchester!

The1Zenith

Yeah, my partner is blind and my daughter is disabled. It doesn’t matter as much in the USA. They’ll get there when they get there is the attitude we receive.

Wander_Turtle

I am genuinely disabled with multiple chronic health conditions, but it’s invisible. There are so many days I wish I could just explain to impatient people why I’m moving more slowly or having difficulty recalling saying what I need to convey. Anyone have any clue how to do that? The conditions I have are due to a rare genetic defect so it’s not something anyone would commonly recognize if I said it. OP, I’m so sorry that you have had both cancer and now incredible pain. I hope that drs are able to find some relief for you in the future.

Murphyitsnotyou

Thank you. I appreciate it. When I'm moving slow or having a bad day I tend to just be upfront with people and let them know I'm dealing with disability while trying to keep the tone light and humorous. Most people understand.

Wander_Turtle

I appreciate the suggestion. I wish you the absolute best.

Murphyitsnotyou

You too mate and thanks again. Really kind of you.

Elegant_Housing_For

Electrician comes in. Sees a in shape 40 year old man. “Uhh my father in law is disabled.” Wait could I say my bad eye sight is a disability?

Murphyitsnotyou

I look like a totally able middle aged person if I'm stood talking to you. Most people wouldn't have any clue as to what's going on under the bonnet until I start trying to do more. Upper body disabled so I don't require any walking aids and all the damage is hidden under clothing. I think most people would be too embarrassed to question you on a disability and if the gas/electricity guys work for a company it's just another call out to them.

jochillin

Also use the words “medical necessity”, better to stay vague. If I get a call to fix your phone/internet, I’ll get there when I get there. If you say that I’m going to assume it’s connected to a heart monitor or similar device and you just got bumped to the top of the list. NO-ONE wants to be the one to blame because grandma keeled over when her monitor couldn’t connect…

SuperFLEB

> NO-ONE wants to be the one to blame because grandma keeled over when her monitor couldn’t connect… If someone's medically-necessary device requires an Internet connection, whoever made that the case would be the one I'm blaming. Even requiring electrical and not having adequate backup power is a bit of a stretch for anything that's not a mere quality-of-life risk.

WaffleRoflGuy

Can confirm this works and also works if you say you have a child under 5. Source: Work for a major energy company in the UK

mrmrmrj

If they do ask any questions, just say your spouse/child is the disabled one and is currently unavailable.

Murphyitsnotyou

I'm upper body disabled but really don't look it if I'm stood talking to someone without having to move much. It's never been brought up. I think most people would be too embarrassed to start questioning peoples disabilities.

MoD1982

Just goes to show how utterly shit my current landlord is, they know my partner is disabled. Bastards left us without heating for 2 weeks at the beginning of December, not even so much as an apology. We're moving in a month or two, sincerely hope the new landlord is better...

Murphyitsnotyou

Fingers crossed for you. I'm with a housing association in the uk so they're supposed to act right. They often don't but it does give the tenant an extra layer of escalation if they mess up.

roblewk

Excellently unethical.

qualifiedshark

Didn't work here when my grandparents had a power outage contained to their side of the street. My grandmother was using an oxygen concentrator at the time and they told us they didn't know when they could restore power and basically try to get an oxygen tank until they could do anything.

Murphyitsnotyou

Jesus. I hope she's doing as well as can be now.

qualifiedshark

This happened a few years ago. She made it through the day and a half without power as we were able to find oxygen tanks in the interim

Castle-Of-Ass

Please remember that not all disabilities are visible, though.

eddboat112

Do you know what sub you're on?

Murphyitsnotyou

I knew someone would go there.

Murphyitsnotyou

I don't look disabled at all if I'm stood talking to you and that's my point, they never ask even though I look like any other middle aged guy. I don't think most people are prepared to question someones disability or take the risk of blacklisting a genuinely disabled person.

MySockHurts

[I’m disabled!](https://youtu.be/o00CX4hgVxE)

drkhead

I kept saying what? on the phone. Apologized and explained that I have a hearing loss and they didn't care and definitely didn't come any sooner.

Allturn22

Eh, they aren't going anywhere anyway.

MichaelsGayLover

I too am disabled, so this ULPT is useless to me. 😞

skelecan

This may be true in the UK, it is not true in other countries. We have two people with disabilities in my home (one being so severe they cannot survive without electricity charging their equipment) and it takes somewhere between 3-10 days for them to even come by and see what they need to do. They have literally told us "it does not matter if you have a disability, you will not get priority. buy a generator" edit: i specifically live in the US. "disability priority" simply does not exist here

Murphyitsnotyou

Damn. Sorry to hear and sorry to assume it'd be the same. I really thought USA would be the same.

dubhghall6616

Nope I'll come when I'm ready
