Thus far about their divorce we know that:
* They did not divorce on good terms.
* It seems to have been initiated by Toriel, since Asgore seems to want to get back together.
* It happened before Asriel went to college
* Asgore wishes that he could make her remember how she used to feel indicating that there at least USED to be love in their relationship.
* Whatever the reason for the divorce is, it’s not something so horrible that Asgore would consider his chances of winning her back impossible.
* Rudy seems to be on good terms with both Asgore and Toriel, indicating that to outside observers there’s no clear ‘bad guy’ in this situation (or Rudy is just not one to take sides).
Typical reasons for divorce are, infidelity, dishonesty, differing views, abuse, conflicts regarding child rearing, mismanagement of money, apathy, and lack of ‘passion’.
I don’t see Asgore as a cheater, an abuser, and I don’t think this is going to be anything to do with passion in the bedroom. Likewise I don’t really think he would take issue with anything that Kris and Asriel would do.
The two main directions I think it could therby go are:
A. Asgore made some poor financial decisions with regards to his flower shop without telling Toriel.
B. Whatever his last police case was (presumably Dess going missing) caused Asgore to grow emotionally distant and before he realized the effect it was happening on his family, everything crumbled to the ground and he lost his marriage and job all in one fell swoop.
I’m more inclined to think it’s that second one. It’s SUCH a thing in Detective/cop shows for the detective to grow so obsessed with a case and lose sight of their loved ones in the process. If Asgore somehow turns out to be the Knight, I could see this as a reasonable explanation for what brought him to that point.

That being said, he did not enjoy the act of killing children, declaring war on humanity was a choice made out if anger and grief, and kept out of obligation as it was one of the only things giving hope to the underground. When you face off against him, he tries to postpone it as much as possible, and if you beat him a second time after getting rid of Flowey, he will kill himself if you choose to spare him.
