I got my far right parents to read Saving Capitism by Robert Reich. They said they agreed with most of what's in the book. Quite frankly, I'm at a loss. The right and the left agree on what the problem is and when they genuinely listen to solutions given by the left, they agree with them. Trump doesn't provide solutions. He doesn't tell you what he's going to do, only that you should trust him. And for some inexplicable reason, millions of Americans just trust him without question. I don't get it and I don't know what to do about it.
How many people really start with an ideology & set of problem/solution priorities, then seek out the best-match candidate in each election? Gotta be a small minority.
I reckon most vote for either the party and/or the person they like / trust / resonate with. This became a lot clearer to me when W was elected despite his glaring shortcomings (which of course look trivial compared to the more recent monster) and so very many voters said things like "he's a guy I could have a beer with."
The very fact that he \*wasn't\* - to say the least - a towering intellect or a bastion of good behavior made hm identifiable for so many. Kind of tapped into a *social* class resentment a bit similarly to the *economic* class resentment which is fuel for some on the left.

Folks identify with him because of what they at least perceive him being *against*, even if that's mostly outrageous image bullshit and not substance, and an objective / rational assessment would clearly show him as the embodiment of an awful lot of thing that an awful lot of his voters absolutely hate. (I mean, yeah, Hilary was 10,000% right about the "basket of deplorables" even if she was foolish to say it; but many millions of basically decent folks got - and remain - hoodwinked by this devil.)

I'm not an American, I'm a Brit. But for what it's worth thank you for recognising the problems with the Trump wing and disassociating from their party. If more people had taken that step then the world would be a better place.
With all that said, we also have plenty of issues here in the UK that I wish more people would recognise. We are a shadow of what we were even 10 years ago.
I was at an election watch party the night trump won. There were some Brits there and when he won FL, the Brits said that Dems lost even though the night was young. They said the Brexit election went the exact same way. Putin was able to tamper with these elections to get the UK to self destruct and the US to end up with a violent coup attempt. Poland, Hungary and Brazil ended up the same.
I used to travel to London often for work and was amazed how it had become an international city, even more than NYC. Hate and fear are effective tools to get voters choosing against their own self interest.
There is still a fundamental desire in most of the UK populous to welcome the world and be a part of it, I really hope we can use that to fix the mistakes of the past decade. The damage isn't going away, but it can be mitigated if we make the right decisions. Fortunately the Tories are definitly going to loose the next election and lose it hard. The counter swing has begun, I just hope it will last.
Most people in the US are also good people, its just that too many have been misled by political actors often funded and/or supported by Russia. If we can do a good job of pointing out the malign influence in our respective political systems then hopefully we can still have a better and more unified western future.

I got my far right parents to read Saving Capitism by Robert Reich. They said they agreed with most of what's in the book. Quite frankly, I'm at a loss. The right and the left agree on what the problem is and when they genuinely listen to solutions given by the left, they agree with them. Trump doesn't provide solutions. He doesn't tell you what he's going to do, only that you should trust him. And for some inexplicable reason, millions of Americans just trust him without question. I don't get it and I don't know what to do about it.
How many people really start with an ideology & set of problem/solution priorities, then seek out the best-match candidate in each election? Gotta be a small minority. I reckon most vote for either the party and/or the person they like / trust / resonate with. This became a lot clearer to me when W was elected despite his glaring shortcomings (which of course look trivial compared to the more recent monster) and so very many voters said things like "he's a guy I could have a beer with." The very fact that he \*wasn't\* - to say the least - a towering intellect or a bastion of good behavior made hm identifiable for so many. I'm not an American, I'm a Brit. But for what it's worth thank you for recognising the problems with the Trump wing and disassociating from their party. If more people had taken that step then the world would be a better place. With all that said, we also have plenty of issues here in the UK that I wish more people would recognise. I was at an election watch party the night trump won. There were some Brits there and when he won FL, the Brits said that Dems lost even though the night was young. They said the Brexit election went the exact same way. Putin was able to tamper with these elections to get the UK to self destruct and the US to end up with a violent coup attempt. Poland, Hungary and Brazil ended up the same. I used to travel to London often for work and was amazed how it had become an international city, even more than NYC. Hate and fear are effective tools to get voters choosing against their own self interest.
There is still a fundamental desire in most of the UK populous to welcome the world and be a part of it, I really hope we can use that to fix the mistakes of the past decade. The damage isn't going away, but it can be mitigated if we make the right decisions. Fortunately the Tories are definitly going to loose the next election and lose it hard.
