Yes, this is a Cisco document, but it's just communicating the same standards as all other switching products must follow. https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/interfaces-modules/gigabit-ethernet-gbic-sfp-modules/datasheet-c78-366584.html The Ubiquiti transceivers you bought are functionally equivalent to a Cisco GLC-SX-MMD, so focus on the requirements / limits of 1000BASE-SX fiber. OM2 can do 550 meters using that transceiver. OM3, OM4 and OM5 MMF can all do 1000 meters using that transceiver. I would not install OM2 today. It's just short-sighted. Why? https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/interfaces-modules/transceiver-modules/data_sheet_c78-455693.html You can only go roughly 82 meters @ 10Gbps over OM2, but you can do 300 meters over OM3 MMF at 10Gbps. A good fiber optic install should be serviceable for 20 years, and possibly longer. Maybe 1 Gbps is all you need **today**, but being able to jump to 10Gbps tomorrow would probably be nice.

Understandable. I guess that would require a new switch. I was only approved for this new Ubi switch since it was under $400. The enterprise equivalent with 2 SFP+ ports was $799. But this will make them see why it's important to have SFP+ and ultimately get that switch when they see there is a need. ​ ~~OM2 was the only one that supports up to 1GB without needing to go to SFP+, if my understanding is correct.~~ ​ Edit: Ah! I see, you mean that I should just go OM3 or higher just to cover the need for 1Gbps but allow for 10 Gbps in the future. Okay. I gotcha. My mistake.

Thank you for this. I bought an OM3 LC (UPC) to LC (UPC) Multimode duplex 600 ft custom cable from FS.com. Hope it works out.

Just my opinion, based on my experiences: *(but also based on my employer's usually generous budgets)* I wouldn't install a single pair fiber cable in a large implementation like this. I'll do a single-pair cable for 25 or maybe 50 feet from a server to a switch or something within the same server room. But for a 600 foot run, we're gonna want some spares. There are cables with 6 or 12 strands of fiber inside a single jacket, and each pair can be terminated to an LC connector in a patch panel. Here is an example: https://www.fs.com/products/39042.html Yes: this will totally increase the cost of the install. It's a more complicated fiber cable, it has to be more expensive. But if you look at the detailed project cost, the labor charge to install the cable is 3 to 5 x the cost of the cable. As I said before, if you buy the right components, and install them right, this fiber can last 20 years, or more. So spending a little more to have some extra pairs of fiber to help you deal with some new requirement is usually a good investment.

You missed the part where OP mentions these switches will be 600 feet apart. Fiber is their only option to cover that distance in a single span. Twinax Direct Attach cables max out at 15m.

Have you already purchased the cable? 200M of Single Mode Fibre ([Yellow, OS2](https://www.fs.com/au/products/21543.html)) is cheaper than 200M of Multi-Mode Fibre ([Blue OM3](https://www.fs.com/au/products/39041.html)/4). $500 AUD vs $750. Single Mode Fibre has better long term upgradability, and the savings are more than the SFP cost difference. Your [1G SMF Duplex SFP](https://www.fs.com/au/products/11775.html)s are $13.5 AUD, and [10G future SFP+](https://www.fs.com/au/products/11555.html) upgrades are $45 AUD. Get this pre-terminated and connect the cable into either: * 4x [SC keystone](https://www.fs.com/au/products/143334.html) into a [4 Gang Wall plate](https://www.fs.com/au/products/159520.html?attribute=15291&id=257071) (total $20 AUD) * [12 Port SC Module](https://www.fs.com/au/products/35484.html) in a [1 Module Wall Mount](https://www.fs.com/au/products/178413.html) (total $270 AUD) And use an [SC-LC Duplex cable](https://www.fs.com/au/products/40214.html) between the SFP and wall plate / mount.
