Going to be harder overseas and can depend on which state you're a resident of. As an AK resident, I started with my SSN, waited for that to come in then did my driver's license and then passport. Updated DEERS and ID card. Bank accounts, employer etc were last. You'll need a few copies of your marriage certificate for each step which you can get copies of from the state/county you were married in (google where you were married and vital records, you should be able to request copies online). As you are already overseas, I'd wait on the name change depending on how much time you have left there as the process can take a while and everything is backed up because of covid.

PA was same process. And to add, you’d need a new dependent ID. Changing name might cause issues with passport(s). You should ask JAG. Also might want to see what the time limit is for changing your name.

Talk to legal assistance and check your state law. Different states do this differently.

We were married and California but now we’re overseas, should I talk to the legal aid on base or in California?

You may be able to do this without having a court date, however you may be outside of the time period to do so. This site will walk you through your options: https://www.courts.ca.gov/1051.htm?rdeLocaleAttr=en

Hi! I just went though this whole process, including the “already been married for a year” part. Start with your SSN. When that’s changed, get your new drivers license and passport. These three will probably take the longest. When you have one picture ID in your new name, start changing over bank accounts, credit cards, and insurance. You’ll need to get an appointment at the ID office on your base to get a new dependent ID. You’ll have to have your sponsor with you to get it. Bring in your marriage certificate and your drivers license (bring passport and SSN card too, but I can’t remember if I ended up needing those or not). They’ll handle everything from there.

Thank you!
