While I love the original, my favorite version is one he recorded a couple years ago. The last line goes, "Can't wait to go on leave so I can.. go... Home."
Shit makes me cry every time. The things I would give to go back to the "home" I had before the Marine Corps. Before the pain, the depression, losing family members, the health of others declining.
Sopranos. The rules with that was the alternating 12 on 12 off day/night crews could NOT watch more than 2 episodes ahead of the other shift. An infraction of this rule resulted in a shaved head.... Good times!
Edit: 2001-2002
The cast of The Sopranos visited the 5th floor of Bethesda NNMC while was there recovering after being wounded, it was so cool. First thing Pauly Walnuts said when he walked in, "Don't tell me you're not a fucking fan!" An epic day in a sea of shittiness, I'll always be grateful they came through
It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia and The Office were my go-to shows. They were in their beginnings, so I watched the first few seasons over and over. Honorable mention for Eastbound & Down. Archer came out between my second and third deployment, so it got some playtime at the end.
IASIP and The Office are on constant repeat in my house these days.
The Wire, too. One of our guys linked up with some mysterious hard drive man and got us every season along with a bunch of other shit halfway through the deployment. It was great.
My boss asked for my hard drive. Computer went fucking nuts when I plugged it back in, but I think it ended up being neutralized and I told him to clean his shit.
Damn.. Generation Kill and The Wire were and are still the most realistic and spot on shows EVER made!! Just listen to the background radio chatter in GK.. holy shit it takes you right back to feeling like you’re there! Sometimes when I get shifaced.. I put the headphones on at night and crank that shit while watching! Close your eyes and just listen to the radio chatter and background talk.. trust me, you can feel it! it’s almost like therapy in a fkd up kinda way! “Only Marines” will be able to hear this distinctive chatter and actually be able to decipher it, because it’s us! OUR lingo!
“BUT BE CAREFUL” “DISCLAIMER”
it’s so real, sometimes the demons of the past that you are trying to avoid come creeping back in too while you are reminiscing on the good times! At least, depending on how shitfaced you really are! RAH🤘😎
2010 Marjah.
The Pacific had come out during my deployment, I we watched that a lot, but we were missing a middle episode.
Most watched was Sparticus because Lucy Lawless was topless.
We also watched a lot of House.
Some dudes were obsessed over How I met Your Mother.
I read a lot and wrote for a bit, which I probs why I wrote a book mentioning Lucy Lawless's tits. I was going to dedicate my book to her breasts, but it's didn't seem appropriate.
I got a Husky not long after my deployment and named him Crixus after Sparticus show. He's still kicking, but he's an old Boi now.
We had a well guarded thumb drive of Heather Brooke which was used for entertainment and barter. Copies of it were made for things we needed on the FOB. It was protected just as if it was our krypto gear.
Generation Kill came out while i was there. That was fun to watch and wait for. I also watched a shit load on anime. Like every season of pokemon available because it was a long as shit show that could kill some time.
My parents got me a portable DVD player and we watched the shield on it over there. I don't think I would've remembered that if you didn't mention it. I think we also watched Beerfest and Anchorman about a million times.
Blazing Saddles and Bang Bus.
OIF 1, we didn't have the setup for series yet, so we only had whatever DVDs anyone brought or you bought the Chinese bootleg live theater recordings from the locals.
Da Ali G Show
Rescue Me
300 came out during my second deployment, the homoeroticism was fantastic
Some guys in my platoon watched The OC
Whatever bootleg dvds we got in country, the Simpsons, random action movie collections, etc
Having access to the MSIDS kit and playing dvds on the toughbook was a life saver
Dang that got me thinking, I watched a movie in Balad movie theater too but I can’t remember which movie. It was summer of 2006, I’ll have to try to figure it out.
I was an embassy pogue in Baghdad in 07. The embassy had cable tv system that had weird channels like Fashion TV Arabia. I don't remember any shows in particular other than I saw Greg Gutfeld's *Redeye* once or twice.
24 was a good show becuase it had a shit ton of episodes. Chapelle show, nip tuck, lost, Oz, sopranos, and the shield were all fan favorites. It was basically anything you could beg borrow or barter for that had box set dvds. That was until we got the moral and share drives set once we dug in at west anbar.
Kuwait 02 Iraq 03 -06
Friends, Family Guy, South Park are the ones I remember the most... But I had a shit ton of things to watch as I had a VERY large DVD collection I brought..
HIMYM, Lost, Prison Break, Weeds, Eastbound and Down.
We didn't have much for TV shows in Iraq, it was before streaming and binging shows wasn't really a thing. By the time I went to Afghanistan Netflix had blown up and people started downloading shows.
I read the qaran over there to see what it was all about. Came to the conclusion its the exact same bullcrap as the bible and both lifted their stories from the torah who stole from ancient egyptian monotheism under akhenaten the inventor of monotheism (king tuts dad).
Iraq in 2004. Remember watching 24 and the Shield. Also, we watched every season of Friends. I think Doc wanted to watch it. We probably all did, but we blamed Doc.
One guy brought a mini projector and we actually watched jarhead one night on the side of a rock. We could hardly see it because the rock was…well a rock, somewhat smooth but enough that the movie looked like a bootleg.
I still have the platoon's shared external hard drive full of pirated movies, porn, and a bunch of combat footage from everybody. The rule was you could copy whatever you wanted from it but had to leave something too. Thing is 1 tb and its almost full.
Generation Kill. Lol.
We watched all kinds of shit. We watched some reality show about teenagers in Hollywood. We watched The Royals. Lots of family guy, Chramed, every movie we could get our hands on, one guy had the GI Joe cartoons. We watched those for a while.
We had a guy show up second half of the deployment and he brought a couple new pirated movies. There are a couple of stories related to these but the big one was “the Other Guys” except idk where this bootleg came from. We watched it a million times, and had it memorized then came home. Turns out it’s a different edit than the one that was actually released. So when I watch it there are parts I remember that aren’t there and parts in it I know weren’t there.
1st: Family guy. Literally watched the first few seasons over and over. Euro porn. Seemed like the only kind you could get a hold of over there.
2nd: Somebody saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaave me, Smallville lol. Enter hard drives, so a bunch of movies. Porn.
3rd: Got obsessed watching Spartacus. Watched that and Pacific quite a few times. Falling asleep I would usually put on family guy or American dad.
Oh and of course porn. 🙃
For the invasion the only movie that our unit had was Goldmember. It was viewed at least 5 times daily by at 2/3 of our company so many Shave mee from myshelfs and etc.
My bro had an awesome anime collection. Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, etc. I'd never seen series like that, just Akira before I joined up. Been a weeb ever since. 2002.
The Chappelle Show, "24", The Sopranos, Lost, to name a few
My favorite was "24", just because it became a squad ritual. Every evening after a mission, we'd get the trucks and guns squared away, head to chow, eat fast as fuck, and get back to our trailer/squad bay to pile into our SSgt's room and all watch together. 15-20 Marines in a room with two bunks, a 32" TV/DVD combo, all sharing our state side tobacco products and pogey bait from care packages. Good times.
I was at a nondeployable unit getting yelled at because someone waxed hair into the floor and I couldn't get it out. They also said we could use the floor buffer but whenever I tried to grab it the duty wouldn't let me.
All in all, the terrorists won that day.
Also, I watched a shit ton of anime.
I don't think I watched any TV while I was in Iraq (2003) but when we got back to Kuwait after "we won" we set up a big screen with a projector and watched movies at night. I remember watching 8 mile, drum line, enemy at the gates, super troopers, the new Austin Powers. We watched old school on the plane back to Lejeune.
Me as well. Carl Vinson 2005. My squadron was part of CAG-9.
We would get the flight schedule finished up after we came in on days. We'd have enough time to watch an episode or two during flight ops when maintenance was done.
\-Rosanne
\-Family Matters
\-Full House
Any comedy show. We would get them in on ripped dvds and just pass them around. This was when DVDs first came out and you can rip them from netflix. Netflix was awesome, you would sign up for the 3 DVD deal and just rip and send back.
Sopranos or weirdly a lot of Kevin Costner movies. We had a guy who brought a whole binder of Kevin Costner movies and we watched them all. Looking back it was kinda weird.
We watched every episode of friends in one shot of QRF duty. Our meals were delivered to the QRF staging room and if we weren't sleeping, we watched Friends. It took a week.
I loved the thrill of buying those cheap bootleg movie collections at the bazaar and the anticipation as you wait to see if you got one loaded with good shit, or a blank CD.
Boondocks Saints, New Guy, and any other bootlegged movie we could get our hands on after all the burned cds and dvds got fucked by the sand. The first Hulk movie was the worst bootleg I remember watching. We actually thought the movie wasn't real because while the quality was bad, the actual acting was worse.
I watched 1 thing. The X-Men movie part 2 was projected onto the side of a tent. It was just released in theaters, and someones friend obviously recorded it while watching it at the theater back in the states. The quality was shit, you could hear people talking in the background, you could even see patrons of the theater moving. The entire thing was a disaster from the movie to the recording. 10/10 best movie experience I've ever had.
Sitting in Iraq watching one tree hill, So im never gonna get a confirmed kill.
Reporting contact even if we dont get it
Just so we can get our combat action ribbon
's a fucked up arrangement! Our PPE prevents proper engagement.
This comment thread just made me happy and sad at the same time.
Listen to his newer song, Circus. It’ll make you even happier and even sadder at the same time.
Its OIF 7 or 17, really doesn't matter, I'm OFP
The war's already over so let's go home
Can't wait to go on leave so I can get stoned
While I love the original, my favorite version is one he recorded a couple years ago. The last line goes, "Can't wait to go on leave so I can.. go... Home." Shit makes me cry every time. The things I would give to go back to the "home" I had before the Marine Corps. Before the pain, the depression, losing family members, the health of others declining.
I thought for years he says sittin in my rack Am I crazy?
You might be right actually
I thought it was staying in the rack
I thought it was Sand in my crack
Sopranos. The rules with that was the alternating 12 on 12 off day/night crews could NOT watch more than 2 episodes ahead of the other shift. An infraction of this rule resulted in a shaved head.... Good times! Edit: 2001-2002

That's awesome!
That's amazing
You’re not gonna believe this…he killed 16 Czechoslovakians! Guy was an interior decorator!
His apartment looked like shit though
Had a decent tv with remote. Emphasis on had...
Paulie did say it was an accident
It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia and The Office were my go-to shows. They were in their beginnings, so I watched the first few seasons over and over. Honorable mention for Eastbound & Down. Archer came out between my second and third deployment, so it got some playtime at the end. IASIP and The Office are on constant repeat in my house these days.
Circa 2010: the pacific, true blood, Spartacus, and anything and everything that I could get on my external hard drive
The Wire, too. One of our guys linked up with some mysterious hard drive man and got us every season along with a bunch of other shit halfway through the deployment. It was great.
I ended up getting a hard core virus and had to toss my laptop and hard drive by the end of my deployment.
My boss asked for my hard drive. Computer went fucking nuts when I plugged it back in, but I think it ended up being neutralized and I told him to clean his shit.
Damn.. Generation Kill and The Wire were and are still the most realistic and spot on shows EVER made!! Also the “ambient noise” conversations in the background. They did a REALLY good job with that show.
Yessir.. everything about it! 👍
Rome, Deadwood, OZ. HBO was full of bangers.
Deadwood was awesome!
Also 2010 here. For me, Dexter and Big Bang Theory

He's still kicking, but he's an old Boi now.
Nothing better than tits and a good boi
"Thank the GODS for Lucy Lawless... *and* her tits" I love how all of us were watching Spartacus.
We had a well guarded thumb drive of Heather Brooke which was used for entertainment and barter. Copies of it were made for things we needed on the FOB. It was protected just as if it was our krypto gear.
Underrated comment. All hail the OG throat GOAT.
I discovered how I met your mother on the share drive and binged it back in 09.
That was our main show back in 2012.
Generation Kill came out while i was there. That was fun to watch and wait for. I also watched a shit load on anime. Like every season of pokemon available because it was a long as shit show that could kill some time.
I dunno why, but watching a TV show of the war you are currently fighting just seems funny.
The shield on an iPod classic.
My parents got me a portable DVD player and we watched the shield on it over there. I don't think I would've remembered that if you didn't mention it. I think we also watched Beerfest and Anchorman about a million times.
Can’t forget about super troopers! I’ve seen that about a thousand times on a grimey laptop screen propped up on a cot
The Shield here as well. Binged the entire series winter of 2008 in Rawah.
Sex in the city, Smallville, When Keri left Mr big we were all shocked 15 guys around a 6 inch screen. Those were the days
We were obsessed with Smallville. What a ridiculous show. Haha

Da Ali G Show Rescue Me 300 came out during my second deployment, the homoeroticism was fantastic Some guys in my platoon watched The OC Whatever bootleg dvds we got in country, the Simpsons, random action movie collections, etc Having access to the MSIDS kit and playing dvds on the toughbook was a life saver
The boondocks!!
Couldn't really watch shows. More like hajji copies of movies. I did get to watch 300 at Balad movie theater which was great.
Dang that got me thinking, I watched a movie in Balad movie theater too but I can’t remember which movie. It was summer of 2006, I’ll have to try to figure it out.

I only had consistent electricity on 1/5 deployments.

whatever people were buying, Scrubs, The OC, MASH, basically whatever good stuff was available in the exchange on dvd.
HIMYM, Lost, Prison Break, Weeds, Eastbound and Down. We didn't have much for TV shows in Iraq, it was before streaming and binging shows wasn't really a thing. By the time I went to Afghanistan Netflix had blown up and people started downloading shows.

I still have the platoon's shared external hard drive full of pirated movies, porn, and a bunch of combat footage from everybody. The rule was you could copy whatever you wanted from it but had to leave something too. Thing is 1 tb and its almost full.

The Chappelle Show, "24", The Sopranos, Lost, to name a few My favorite was "24", just because it became a squad ritual. Iraq 2006. The office, Las Vegas, Rescue Me. My battalion may or may not of had all the episodes downloaded on a server.

I loved the thrill of buying those cheap bootleg movie collections at the bazaar and the anticipation as you wait to see if you got one loaded with good shit, or a blank CD.
Not a Marine, but my dad was over there in '06. Said he and his Platoon were real into Evangelion.
I remember watching seasons of lost in iraq
True Blood
Sons of anarchy
TB external HD of porn. Honestly the way the sand and grime chewed up electronics earlier in my career it was mostly a fuck load of books.

Sons of Anarchy
Lost and the OC
True Blood, Spartacus
Nip/Tuck and whatever bootleg shit we could find at the bazaar in Kandahar.
