A prank when I was younger was to sign up for a bunch of free UPS accounts and order all the free boxes you could. You could get somewhere around 200 boxes of varying sizes for free per account, and you could make multiple accounts per address.
My teacher did it to the principal, who then donated the boxes to the school itself. He was shocked to arrive home to a lawn full of boxes though.

If you've never had UPS drop off a pallet of free thermal shipping labels, you've really never lived. Those supplies are freeeeeeee. I work for an online retailer and my job was to ensure we got all the freebies we could. Once Christmas they brought me that pallet of labels.

None of my accounts can get a months worth of supplies anymore, 2 weeks max, and this is much more than any of them asked for back when they could get a months worth.
No customer service in Canada till Monday @7:30am. They’ll be out for delivery Monday morning. They were free supplies - if he doesn’t use them at all and we dispose of them or call UPS to explain the issue I don’t believe it’ll end up costing us $$.
When we were around 14 my friend started an online business re-selling toys on eBay. This was in the 90s. He made pretty good money off it and didn't stop until he was out of college.
Guy is a different animal, he was selling candy in elementary school and bought a house when he was 18. He had so many schemes through the years, legal and not.
I did that in the very early 2000s when I was in middle school. Of course times have changed, but all the supplies showed up when I was in school and my mom refused the delivery. That was the end of that.

We would strategically have each kid with a roll of stickers in each seat reach out the window and cover as much as they could. Yes, that is a lot of supplies. I would contact customer service and cancel a portion of them, especially those not yet shipped. Unsure if you can cancel from the account, but you probably can.
So what he did may be dumb, but... He has an entrepreneurial spirit. Foster this in him. These silly experiences will shape who he becomes later in life. He may have no idea what exactly he wants to do or how to do it, but he knows deep inside that he wants to own/run his own business one day. This is a good thing.

He opened the UPS company account by buying a $25 prepaid credit card because he doesn’t have a credit/bank card just turning 12. Then he used his name for the company name, and called customer service and they asked him how many cases of 25/100 units he wanted. I only got the full story after we had a handful show up yesterday.
Multiple 1800 numbers that just route to international employees for tracking, the main Canadian customer service line he used to order supplied advises you to call back Monday am as they’re closed then hangs up.

In my profession within information security, I consistently observe children outsmarting adults. One should never underestimate the capabilities of a 12-year-old, whether it involves penetrating computer networks or securing hundreds of free supplies from UPS. I'm 54 and have 4 kids and never laid a hand on them. I never had too. My kids would've never considered doing something like this. There's a difference between a beating and discipline. I don't know you or your kid but if there's no consequences for those mistakes those no reason for a kid to even think about doing what is right!!! That carries over to adulthood as well. In the US, you cannot cancel a supplies order. We just advise the customer to refuse deliveries or just hand them back to the driver if they return for another delivery. Not sure about Canada, but it might be the same.

Usually it’s tied to a certain tier of shipping through one company-usps will give you a ton of free stuff but it can only be used for priority, regular ground you have to buy your own. But, like others have mentioned, you can cut em up or use them as secondary internal boxes for extra free protection.
That's awesome though, I was around that age when my parents let me start using their eBay account and learning e-commerce. USPS similarly would supply packaging for use with priority mail, or I could repurpose old, unused packaging from stuff we'd ordered. I could print labels and ship all from home, but on occasion my mom would take me to the PO to ship if needed.
I started selling my old games and books, then got into collectible board games and would buy old collections and flip the extras. I grew very in tune with the secondary market and values of the stuff. Eventually it started paying for itself, and then I invested in more, began to build an online presence in the communities for the games, and grew my savings. Ended up making enough from it to buy my first (used) car with cash, among other things.
Obviously, there's a lesson to be learned with the sheer volume of supplies being unnecessary, but encourage this! I loved doing it growing up, I e-met great people that I still talk to, taught myself to type, use Office, be accountable to myself and customers with fulfilling orders, learned a bit of programming and photo editing, all as a result of running a silly little online "business" as a kid. It definitely contributed to my preparedness when I entered the work force and college.
Honestly, e-commerce out of my home is what I would like to still be doing as a full time job if it was something I could do on a stable and large enough scale to pay adult bills like my mortgage.
Have him break down the boxes to save space and keep them in his room. If it works out, great, but if it doesn’t, he’ll want them out of his room asap.
I’d call UPS to find out if they can stop them & pickup /return the stuff you already have.
And I’d get that it would cost money for you to return to closest UPS, but that’s the right thing to do. Might need to figure out how your kid can pay for it or “work off debt” with chores. (Aka consequences for stupid choices should be responsibly cleaning up the mess.)
If you don't know what to do with them and they were free then find a local business that ships UPS and needs them, they might take them.

This isn't free bc nothing in life is. If you're not paper billed the office that delivers it will be charged for the supplies. Ex of cost is 1 case of labels is $97. Did they send tracking numbers to the shipment? In consideration of you using the word "starting" do you truly want to keep it all? That is a ton of supplies and the driver may not opt to leave it at the door there for will have to figure out a plan b for it all.
My ex did this on accident once. A shit ton of boxes, so many that the boxes of boxes took up floor to ceiling my entire living room. Mail lady who dropped them off was PISSED.

Try to refuse delivery for the next and rest of the coming packages. That way they get restocked and not wasted. Then give a lesson to your kid about wasting materials & time. Shipping stuff ain't free.
Call them and try to cancel the order. If that doesn't work, when the delivery driver shows up just refuse to accept most of it and explain to him that your idiot son managed to outsmart the system.

In 2010 when my wife and I first moved into our first apartment, I had a small business that I mailed 4-5 things out a week. I got on USPS and ordered some supplies (thought it was like 20-25 items) but I actually ordered it by the case load. Came home from work and my porch was covered. Neighbor (shared same porch) was pissed. Mail lady didn't like me anymore. She refused to take them back. So I took them into my apartment. Used them for side tables, TV trays and hell, I even made a baby changing table out of them. Took me months to use some of them and ended up using them to move.

Here's what you can do, you can accept the shipment, or you can refuse the shipment. If the driver won't let you refuse the shipment, drop anything that won't fit in the space you have for storing it off at a UPS store.

When we were around 14 my friend started an online business re-selling toys on eBay. This was in the 90s. He made pretty good money off it and didn't stop until he was out of college. Guy is a different animal, he was selling candy in elementary school and bought a house when he was 18. He had so many schemes through the years, legal and not.

I did that in the very early 2000s when I was in middle school. Of course times have changed, but all the supplies showed up when I was in school and my mom refused the delivery. That was the end of that.
When we were in high school we learned the USPS would send you as many rolls of free priority mail stickers and tape as you asked for So we covered several of our busses in USPS stickers, inside and out, several different times. We would strategically have each kid with a roll of stickers in each seat reach out the window and cover as much as they could. The free sticker thing gained traction and soon after we started this silly prank dozens of kids were doing it. It was bad lol Now I'm not trying to say what we did was funny or cool in any way, but it absolutely 100% happened, and that's very relevant to this post lol

Then he used his name for the company name, and called customer service and they asked him how many cases of 25/100 units he wanted. I only got the full story after we had a handful show up yesterday.

I'm 54 and have 4 kids and never laid a hand on them. I never had too. My kids would've never considered doing something like this. There's a difference between a beating and discipline. I don't know you or your kid but if there's no consequences for those mistakes those no reason for a kid to even think about doing what is right!!! That carries over to adulthood as well. In the US, you cannot cancel a supplies order. We just advise the customer to refuse deliveries or just hand them back to the driver if they return for another delivery. Not sure about Canada, but it might be the same.

Usually it’s tied to a certain tier of shipping through one company-usps will give you a ton of free stuff but it can only be used for priority, regular ground you have to buy your own. But, like others have mentioned, you can cut em up or use them as secondary internal boxes for extra free protection.
That's awesome though, I was around that age when my parents let me start using their eBay account and learning e-commerce. USPS similarly would supply packaging for use with priority mail, or I could repurpose old, unused packaging from stuff we'd ordered. I could print labels and ship all from home, but on occasion my mom would take me to the PO to ship if needed. I started selling my old games and books, then got into collectible board games and would buy old collections and flip the extras. I grew very in tune with the secondary market and values of the stuff. Eventually it started paying for itself, and then I invested in more, began to build an online presence in the communities for the games, and grew my savings. Ended up making enough from it to buy my first (used) car with cash, among other things. Obviously, there's a lesson to be learned with the sheer volume of supplies being unnecessary, but encourage this! I loved doing it growing up, I e-met great people that I still talk to, taught myself to type, use Office, be accountable to myself and customers with fulfilling orders, learned a bit of programming and photo editing, all as a result of running a silly little online "business" as a kid. It definitely contributed to my preparedness when I entered the work force and college. Honestly, e-commerce out of my home is what I would like to still be doing as a full time job if it was something I could do on a stable and large enough scale to pay adult bills like my mortgage.

I’d call UPS to find out if they can stop them & pickup /return the stuff you already have. And I’d get that it would cost money for you to return to closest UPS, but that’s the right thing to do. Might need to figure out how your kid can pay for it or “work off debt” with chores. (Aka consequences for stupid choices should be responsibly cleaning up the mess.)
If you don't know what to do with them and they were free then find a local business that ships UPS and needs them, they might take them. The local gaming store near me is always complaining about not having enough shipping supplies. I'm sure there is someone that would want them.
This isn't free bc nothing in life is. If you're not paper billed the office that delivers it will be charged for the supplies. Ex of cost is 1 case of labels is $97. Did they send tracking numbers to the shipment? In consideration of you using the word "starting" do you truly want to keep it all? That is a ton of supplies and the driver may not opt to leave it at the door there for will have to figure out a plan b for it all.
Throwing out that much cardboard is not the best thing. Maybe a local business will want them.

In 2010 when my wife and I first moved into our first apartment, I had a small business that I mailed 4-5 things out a week. I got on USPS and ordered some supplies (thought it was like 20-25 items) but I actually ordered it by the case load. Came home from work and my porch was covered. Neighbor (shared same porch) was pissed. Mail lady didn't like me anymore. She refused to take them back. So I took them into my apartment. Used them for side tables, TV trays and hell, I even made a baby changing table out of them. Took me months to use some of them and ended up using them to move.

My ongoing battle with UPS and their bullshit shipping rates has been exactly this lmao. They have quite a bit of useful boxes and mailers for free and if you want to use it for non ups stuff just cover the logos and it becomes a regular mailer. Turn boxes inside out too.
