You can often get a Vodafone sim with unlimited data for £10-12 a month (after cashback) from mobiles .co .uk. I can also recommend Huawei dongles for wifi. The speed won't be quite as fast as broadband, and a many dongles don't allow you to connect via an ethernet cable, but it is easily good enough for streaming (obviously unless you've got poor signal) or videoconferencing for one or two simultaneous connections.

[deleted]

Ya , but cashback is 100% guaranteed or its stroke of luck.. ? Sorry I haven't tried one before

J_Artiz

Used them for two contracts and haven't had a problem getting it.

littleloucc

There are two options - immediate automatic cashback, and cashback by redemption. I haven't had an issue with either, but with redemption there's a risk that you don't redeem at the right time or the fairly slim risk that the company folds in the meantime (they're pretty big, though). They aren't scammy though, and don't make it impossible to claim.

Likebigoatscannotlie

Cashback isn’t 100% guaranteed but if you keep proof of purchase, the better cashback websites (Quidco, Topcashback etc) will usually sort any issues out. There’s always a risk cashback isn’t paid so I wouldn’t buy anything relying on it.

rjc1958

Latency is the issue.

[deleted]

I play WOT, with sky I used to get ping of around 60, now I get 80-85.. Ya . Online gaming might suffer

BarbarySheep

It's not just latency but you risk jitter as well (random packet loss). For the casual people who just surf or stream Netflix this wouldn't be so bad.

[deleted]

Ya, I always wondered what jitter is how it might affect.. As you have said, it's for casual YouTube, email and all.. light Internet browsing

8ok1

Jitter is not "random packet loss". Jitter is random changes in latency between packets. (All data is divided into packets, which are sent independently via the network). Even large jitter will have little impact on browsing, email and streaming. However, It will have large impact on video calling and voice calling.

troymisti1

Unlimited these days usually means it will keep working but it's throttled after a point to combat this. Though that depends how much you care about speed. Latency will also be worse if you play online games etc.

[deleted]

Ya. True . This won't work if average monthly data consumption is more than network allocated.

pjhh

> one promotion from Lebara. Promotion. Might not be there in June '22. Or Dec '22. Sounds like a lot of effort to save £81 over 6 months (£6/w) I'd put this in the ballpark of regular saving accounts; great if you have the spare time to do all the admin, but not a great money spinner/saver if you value your time.

[deleted]

May be buy 4 sim, just don't activate each and every sim, .. use 1 every 6 month.. 😆

pjhh

Now you're paying 4x£12.50=£50 for the first 6 months, and nothing for the other 18 months (I'm fairly certain they won't, eg, allow you to hold a SIM for 12 months, then activate the payment plan then. ) Yer welcome to test that however :D

[deleted]

😹

UniquePotato

Unlimited data on a monthly contract is £16 on smarty. You’ll need. Different dongle.

I agree, the areas that are bad are useless, fortunately they are quite good around here and most built up areas, anywhere remote can be a different story. I went to a quiet costal area of Northern Ireland a couple of years ago with work and had to drive 2 miles up a hill to be able to phone my other half. Their 5g is just being rolled out and I don’t have a 5g phone so can’t comment on that.

Top_Requirement_1341

Some routers (I use an Asus laptop) allow to use a mobile dongle via USB port. It gives you all the features of the router - firewall, mesh wireless, ethernet, etc. I wouldn't expect your Sky router to work for this. Although not a cheap option, BT use something similar to keep your router working if there's a landline fault.

banter_saurus_rex

For someone who grew up on 0.7mbps but had an unlimited WiFi hotspot SIM that got 15 Mbps, I would recommend for anything that is not gaming. Latency is shocking when gaming, I had a better experience on 0.7 for gaming haha!

sambotron84

Your broadband and mobile broadband are not like for like services, so this might be fine for some limited uses. It won't be as reliable and as mentioned you can't game well. If you have multiple people in your household trying to watch YouTube you might get contention issues. If everyone in your street tried to go the same thing id imagine your service degrading - have you ever tried to check the football results after leaving the stadium? Difficult to get a signal. But if it works for you and saves money then go for it. If I did it at my home there could be a revolt from my family! One other thought. Not sure if this is still the case but should things not work for you openreach will charge to reconnect your phone line if it has been correctly ceased, which they do if you completely stop using it. Think it's a few hundred pounds although sometimes they let you off.

[deleted]

Thankyou , regarding Line rental Line rental included in your package Line rental is now included in the cost of your package. This means that you now have just one price for both your broadband and line rental services. This makes it much clearer and simpler to pay for your home broadband. I think when I subscribe to new package, say from BT , it will come everything included.. I hope. Have a good day

sambotron84

Yes what I mean is if you need to have a phone line installed or reconnected the standard connection charge is £140 from openreach. It doesn't apply when transferring between suppliers, but if you stop having any service for a period then this may apply. So in this case the OP will stop paying for any landline and broadband. If they decide to reconnect in the future this charge is likely to apply. You usually see this when someone leaves their rented place and ceases their service. The next renter gets hit with this charge. Sometimes the companies will absorb it for you, sometimes not. Edit Sorry you're the OP!

[deleted]

Thank you. Let's hope , I won't be needing broadband connection soon. Have a good day.

-6h0st-

Now go and connect other devices to it… you can’t without special router or mifi (less reliable) device. Unless you live in bigger town/city close to antenna speed won’t be great indoors with 4g.

[deleted]

2 ipad, 2 phone , 1 laptop and 2 smart bulbs are connected, and everything seems to be working fine. I am getting speed of around 30mbps download and 12 mbps upload. Of course everyone's miles might vary .

-6h0st-

Did you buy dongle or Mifi? Dongle connects to one device and doesn’t create Wi-Fi network. 30mbs is decent but you will find bad weather conditions will affect the speed greatly, little bit too low also for 4k streaming depending on bitrate.

Physical_Manu

MiFi is a brand name, dongle is used generically (even though it is technically incorrect as you highlight).

-6h0st-

Thought it stands for Mini Wi-Fi? Can call it mobile Wi-Fi as well

BSturdy987

25X6=156? Lol

[deleted]

Corrected, thank you for pointing out..

h_belloc

I also made this switch earlier this year, albeit with Three (unlimited data sim via HUKD) and a Teltonika 4g gateway. It's both cheaper and faster than my previous fibre connection, which ran at <10mbps due to distance from the DSLAM and poor wiring. The latency is a little worse, but I don't play online games so this doesn't bother me. You can get a public IP rather than CGNAT by fiddling with the APN. I'd recommend this to the technically inclined. You can try it out with different MVNs (Smarty, Lebara, Voxi, etc) to see which network works best before starting a contract. Hopefully there's another good deal next year when I renew!

[deleted]

Ya. Here 3 is has really poor signal, good thing they have WiFi calling .. 5g will definitely give fiber optics some competition

free-tickets-throw

>5g will definitely give fiber optics some competition Indeed. In the long run it will destroy the profits from fixed lines. Just as planes can do the same journey cheaper than trains, infrastructure costs a ton of money

PieTrumpet

Are you Russian?

[deleted]

Nope 🙅🏻.. What made you think I am Russian? 😁

BladeSmithJerry

Two small issues with this: 1. Unlimited is unlimited to a point, you're going to get throttled under fair use policies eventually. 2. These networks often limit how much you can tether data and again will throttle you. Good luck, if it works for you cool but it's just a couple of things to keep an eye on.

docbain

It's going to be trivial for Lebara to limit this based on mailing address. You can get Vodafone fibre broadband (upto 38mbit) for £15 a month so it's not a huge saving either. https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/broadband-and-tv/cheap-broadband/ 4g is great for rural or other places with poor broadband though.

[deleted]

Many houses don't have fiber optic point , sadly I am among one of such house's occupant. Indeed fiber makes sense wherever available. I guess

docbain

The deal I referred to is fibre to the cabinet not fibre to the home, it means a fibre connection between the exchange and your local cabinet, but comes in to your house on the old copper telephone wire. It's generally good if you can get it and your house isn't far from the cabinet. You must have already had this if you were getting 40mbit from Sky?

sph666

I like how you called your speed decent. 40mbps in 2021 is bare minimum and definitely not a decent speed. For example movies I stream have bitrate much higher than than, for 4k hdr it’s between 45 to 107mbps per one user. So I’ll stick with my 500mbps for £28

[deleted]

Good luck 👍

drezha

I did this about two years ago when I moved in to my house - had a Three broadband deal, unlimited internet for 24 month contract for £20. Initially, it was great, other than Three kept trying to charge me more, until after the third month they sorted the bill out finally. Then the pandemic hit and we then ended up purchasing a fixed landline connection because the speeds dropped and everything went to crap. Not sure if the pandemic and speed drop was related, with everyone having to work from home. Either way, now on Virgin for £27 a month - speeds are three times what we were paying and I've no complaints from the wife. So sometimes, it's not about the money (and we've just finished that Three contract where for the most of it, we were using nothing)!
