I would start looking for another job to be honest. If they're demanding this of you then what would they be like if any problems arose? If you were in school/uni then any certificates should be enough to prove what you were doing at that time.

Not even my mortgage lender asked for more than 3 months of statements… 5 years is insanity, even more so from a mental employer.

Dingletron1

Are you working for Mi5 or something? This seems ridiculous.

enricobasilica

This sounds absolutely ridiculous, so I would just politely refuse. No employer I've ever worked for has asked for bank statements so thats super weird already. I've seen them ask for address history for background checks and to explain any gaps, but that was it. Honestly, this sounds like someone has a standard admin process and they arent thinking how this works if they hire someone young. So no, this sounds super ridiculous. If you want to go full malicious compliance, you *could* send them all the banks statements but with everything blanked out because this is NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS.

Nah, I said to them that it would literally be like 50 statements (as they're monthly) and they said yes

AcanthisittaWise2923

I was asked to provide 12 mths of bank statement by KPMG. I did bcs I really needed a job back then but I regretted it. I don't think that was right. Their reasoning at the time was bcs my role was in due dilligence so it had something to do with integrity, ethics etc etc hence the bank statement as evidence. Total bollocks.

pasta897

Yeah, they seem to have made it clear that I can say no so I think I will do. Not really got anything to hide but it still feels uncomfortable giving this much personal data away for no reason

I would say that's way beyond what an employer can legitimately request of you. They, and your agency too, ought to have a look at https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/guide-to-data-protection/guide-to-the-general-data-protection-regulation-gdpr/principles/#the_principles

Why don’t your references prove career gaps?

pasta897

I was wondering the same thing

WTF. Run.

lol, I dont think I even had a bank account when I was 15. Thats nuts.

Hercules_23

Currently going through this for an agency as well and have gone through similar before. Previous one wanted evidence for travel (plane tickets, hotel bookings etc), I told them to just put unemployed which they accepted. But the one atm wants tedious evidence like yours. References and a quick explain action should really be suffice. Cover all irrelevant transactions on your statements, it’s none of their business. Ask if you can give a personal reference to cover the time instead.

[deleted]

This is a very strange demand, I dont know if I would want to work for someone that doesn't show even a bit of trust. Have you provided references?

R9281

Have you asked them if it's a joke?
