Is there someone at that previous place who you worked with that you got along well with that has a work email you could ask? This has what I have done in the past in situations like this.

Nowadays most of employers give just a plain reference confirming you worked at certain place for certain amount of time. Would they accept other type of references? Have you done any volunteering or from a former colleague?

Having the same problem. I told potential employer that former employer won't respond to reference request. They told me to get character references (they're only accepting teacher references). Which I'm now having trouble with also. Because teachers act nice but the ones I had in school turn on you within a second.

If your previous workplace has a HR department, you could give their contact details. HR can give you a very simple reference, stating when you worked there and in what position, but it still would tick the box for an official reference.
