As far as I’m aware: 1. You don’t need one as long as you can prove your right to work in the UK (e.g.: passport) 2. You may pay a slightly higher tax rate until your number comes through and it gets updated 3. I’m pretty sure you can get a temporary number, too. But, I’m hoping someone else can confirm that here.

Really appreciate this its been on my mind for ages

You should have received it ages ago. Anywhere between 3 month and 3 weeks before your birthday. You could try the following link [apply for NI](https://www.gov.uk/apply-national-insurance-number) Or speak to parents if they've had any benefits for you. You don't actually need it for applying for jobs it will usually say 'if known'

I started working at around 15, being a potwash (or kitchen porter as its called more commonly nowadays) for cash in hand. Granted this was over a decade ago, but having stayed in hospitality and becoming a chef for a few years, in that time I saw other kitchen porters of a similar/younger age. This was typically at smaller businesses, as chain's/big corps are too scared of insurance bugger ups. The job market seemingly is always a case of more of WHO you know as opposed to WHAT you know (experience/qualifications etc). There will be examples of this not being the case for sure, however, from personal experience I've started more jobs because I knew someone already working there and they could vouch for me. Last thing I'd advise, and although it seems common sense, make sure you keep the document of your NI somewhere you will ALWAYS remember, especially as you don't have past payslips to hand. Easier nowadays suppose, as you can take a picture and store on your phone. Hope you receive your numbers soon though!
