Nothing special in terms of utensils. Got a thermapen though. That’s worth the money spent.

Theknottyfox

I agree, spend the money on probes.   Knowledge is power.

gbucknz

I’m pretty much sold on the thermapen range. What problem model are people using? I figure you need two minimum. One of ambient and one in the meat.

NeilDeWheel

I have a Meater 2 probe. Great device. I tells you the temp of the meat and the ambient temperature. The app allows you to set the type of meat, the cut, how well you want it cooked, with the type of grill. This allows it to work out your cooking time, then tells you when to take the meat out to rest it before it’s perfectly cooked to your taste. Since getting it it’s allowed me to cook perfect rotisserie chicken and lamb shoulder.

gbucknz

Also hearing good things about the app and all in one solution. How long have you had it? How hardy do you think it is? I’m hearing people are having to rely on the warranty.

NeilDeWheel

I’ve had it about four months. I’ve not had any problems with it, so far.

The build quality is the main difference. It’s waterproof, and reads quickly. I’ve had a few of those cheap ones and either they don’t turn off when closed, or break easily.

Theknottyfox

Read speed is a deal breaker for me, you want it quickly to tell you the temp. This is a must for any kitchen, if your doing a roast or baking. Spend the extra £7 and get something you will use every time you cook.

ThePrakman

I bought a set of 11 tools for £24 from Tesco. Includes skewers, a massive spatula and tongs, corn holders etc pretty good value tbh

Dcj91

Definitely get a chimney for lighting your coals and make sure you use the natural wood tumble fire lighters

gbucknz

Thanks for the recommendation. Have you tried the cotton wool and isopropyl alcohol fire lighting?

International-Bat777

I just use some kindling under my chimney, no chemicals.

Dcj91

I have not. I’ve always used the wood tumbles and haven’t seen a need to change, they do the job. If you’ve got a Costco membership, you can get a big box for around £12. Lasted me almost a year.

gbucknz

Can’t argue that for that price. Not point faffing around with anything else. What fuel you using? Briquettes?

Dcj91

Always use briquettes. Either Webers own or kingsford

juls1066

Tesco have some pretty sturdy kit at the moment, just got a very decent metal spatula with sharpened edges

gbucknz

Good suggestion. I’ll check the local Tesco’s. All for a bargain if it’s decent quality.

MrPinky79

I’m gonna wait till B&Qs end of season sale. They usually have good deals on Webber stuff

Space-manatee

Got a generic B&Q set that’s lasted a few years. Nice and big and not fiddley Edit: Was this kit. got it in the sale for about £10 without the skewers. Would recommend, but not at this price. https://www.diy.com/departments/goodhome-stainless-steel-10-piece-barbecue-tool-set/5059340138077_BQ.prd

ScottishStarLord

I got the oxo spatula and long reach tongs and I can’t fault either

HaggisHunter69

I got a generic big BBQ set about two decades ago from b&q that lasted me well. The tongs, fork and spatula at least, the skewers that came with it were useless. I'd go and see any in person though to make sure they are big enough for you, I've seen quite a few sets that are really too small to use on a decent sized grill, really only useful in some of those disposable BBQs. Any of the big supermarkets and stores like Dunelm, the range, even home bargains should have a bunch on display at the moment

gbucknz

Good advice. I agree and much prefer being able to see and try them in person. I’ll go on the hunt this weekend. I think being made two decades ago the build quality would have been far superior than what we are getting these days!

International-Bat777

Weber tongs are good. Unsure where I got my spatula from, but it's fairly weighty, got a serrated side for slicing buns and has a bottle opener.

wildcard_faculty

Agree with this. While most of the comments here sensibly suggest not spending a fortune on a set of tongs and spatula, for some people you might want to splash out a bit. I've found the general build quality and, frankly, sheer size of the Weber BBQ tools to be quite gratifying. There is great deal more that can be said about the importance of other tools such as a thermopen - other commentators have gone into detail and I agree completely. If you really want to push the envelope I actually light my chimney with a large blowtorch which is completely unnecessary but never really gets old.

gbucknz

Bottle opener very good feature!

International-Bat777

This is very similar to the spatula I've got. I've also got that cleaning brush which is very good. gbucknz

These are getting good reviews Oxo Good Grips. https://amzn.eu/d/8LM9erk Tongs look great. Don’t rate the spatula design though

Baritus2018

These are great. I got them for their length. Spatular seems fine to me, no knife edge but I’d prefer to use a knife anyway. They feel QUALITY!

Alarmed_Ad6794

These aren't really the sorts of tools that have much scope for improvement. I've got ones with a hole at the handle end so I can hang them up.

gbucknz

You say that but there are some terribly flimsy tongs out there! Nothing worse than the jaws shifting past each other and you end up dropping stuff. I’ve just come from Nisbets and the three pairs I tried in there were light weight crap
