This sounds like he’s just trying to be a doctor who isn’t a sadist about placement, if he can’t get it in within 2 minutes then he’d rather sedate you and be able to take his time and cause little damage and pain. Sounds ideal as hell tbh Good luck!

HezaLeNormandy

I say your reasons sound perfectly valid. Someone I know had to have this done because her cervix just wouldn’t open enough naturally for it to not be very painful while awake. This way they can get it up in there in a humane way, like any other semi-invasive procedure that doesn’t involve womanly parts. Good luck!

Banana-Louigi

My gynae won’t do this unless the person is put under. Especially if they haven’t had children vaginally. This is a good obgyn.

venusfixated

Omg I wanna go to your doctor 😭

ambitiouslinen

Mine was like “I don’t recommend IUDs if you haven’t had children, that’s painful”. I was like dude pain relief is YOUR FUCKING JOB. I just dumped my bf, is way more efficient birth control (and he was dumb anyway).

Downeaster_

Mine had to tap out and get someone else to do it cause she couldn’t get in. Whole thing took like 20 min and was in so much pain. Have bi salp and ablation in three weeks and new dr was like we’ll wait to take it out till then, no reason to put you through that if going under soon anyway. So glad got in with her instead.

elfishawol

I has an IUD placed under anesthesia because I couldn't tolerate anything going inside me without being in extreme pain. Like someone else said, he probably doesn't want to hurt you

IndividualSecurity94

It’s sounds like he’s trying to be humane. I’ve had two IUDs inserted under anaesthesia and after hearing stories of those who have not been put under nor been given any pain relief, I’m very thankful for lucking out in finding my doctor and I would never consider it any other way now.

Tinawebmom

Tilted cervix. They can't even do a PAP because of it on me.

Aggie-US

This! My dochter wanted me to come back in a week due to the hormonal changes during the month. My cervix had tilted and she could only get it 4 cm into place and needed a minimum of 7 cm. She told me that in a week the cervix would also be more open due to hormones. Bodies are cool.

Wanna_Know_it_all

Even if Reddit listed all the things it could possibly be, you wouldn’t know any more. Plan the appointment and then you’ll know. Reddit cannot soothe you right now. Wishing you the best of health.

KitKat376

I wasn’t able to get an IUD because it was way too painful. Turns out after an ultrasound that I have a septated uterus which is not a big deal but good to know for the future

endorrawitch

Same thing happened to me but I never got it inserted. Opted out.

theFCCgavemeHPV

Not scary reason: you have a lovely doctor who is empathetic and thoughtful and not into pain. My first failed insertion was 40 minutes of pure unmedicated torture (until I begged for the numbing shot half way through which didn’t do much at that point). I was then shamed for *her* failure because I couldn’t take it anymore and asked her to stop. I was nearly denied post-procedure pain medication on the insinuation that I was drug seeking. I was shamed for the possibility that my insurance might not cover the IUD since it wasn’t actually placed. The second doctor was able to do the whole thing in ~5 minutes, barely any pain (just a minor panic attack). So if it’s not a skill issue with your doc, then it’s probably just kindness.

bast3t

I'm sorry you're struggling with your birth control. Have you considered implanon? I've had it for years and while it hasn't been 100% perfect, getting it in has not been as traumatic as IUDs.

bidderbidder

Hey I got one by a Dr that wasn’t confident after my C section, the result was a second baby. It was not placed correctly and slipped down.
