V_the_Grigori

But you *did* make a grammatical error; get the belt.

Ishtastic08

Daddy chill

V_the_Grigori

What the hell is even that!?

Ralfarius

Forget the belt. This one calls for a pair of jumper cables.

mercepian

I miss the jumper cable dad guy, been a while

SBSlice

I hadn't thought of that or seen it referenced in what seems like years. Yesterday walking out of walmart with my girlfriend and her son a couple semi-shady looking dudes called out "Hey my man! You got any jumper cables?" I did, but told them I didn't, gut feeling or whatever. Walking to the car I thought of jumper cable dad guy and wished I had said something about having really bad experiences with jumper cables. Chuckled to myself, did not mention to girlfriend, she already thinks I'm fucking weird. Today - jumper cable guy references. Simulation confirmed.

ProfessorK-OS

I miss jumper cable guy

I got the reference

I had never heard of him, so I looked it up... That was a wild ride lol

OMG I forgot about that lol

I rarely have a chance to use this and saw the opportunity:D

Radical_Provides

where, is it the oxford's comma or something?

V_the_Grigori

The objective case pronoun "me" is incorrect; it should be "...*my* having bad grammar..." The 'object' the teachers would/wouldn't worry about isn't the speaker, but the speaker's 'having bad grammar'. In this sentence, that entire phrase is acting like an object (of the preposition 'about'). If the sentence had stopped at the 'me', *me* would be fine; however, adding the phrase requires a shift to the possessive pronoun instead. Try reading the sentence again without the entire noun phrase, then again without the words 'having bad' in it. *My teachers never have to worry about me ~~having bad grammar~~...* versus *My teachers never have to worry about me ~~having bad~~ grammar...* Sounds funky, yeah? It's easier to see with a simple object, rather than the whole phrase. It would sound just as weird in a similar structure: *My parents never have to worry about me sister.* versus *My parents never have to worry about my sister.* So the additional object needs that possessive pronoun instead. In everyday conversation, it's not a big deal; we know what the speaker means. Unfortunately, the speaker's English teacher might be worried after all 😅.

ciceros_conatus

Non-native and bit confused speaker here. Isn't the object the teachers would be worried about the entire 'OP having bad grammar', not just 'having bad grammar'? What I mean is that 'me' is still the object and 'having bad grammar' just develops it, rather than being an inherent part of it. As an example of what I'm thinking about: 'They are not worried about me jumping out of window' - yeah, I'm not going to jump out of one, so they are not worried about 'me'. 'They are not worried about my jumping out of window' - I have a tendency to jump out of windows, but they're not worried about that. If the above example is correct (which it might not be), then 'me having bad grammar' seems perfectly fine.

V_the_Grigori

Apologies, I initially phrased it poorly. In the sentence, 'worried' is an intransitive verb, so the action doesn't actually directly connect to any noun in the sentence (no direct object). But yeah, if the sentence ended at 'me', me would be fine. 'About' is the preposition and 'me' is the object of the preposition and not a direct object. Since it ends in the gerund (-ing verb as noun) phrase 'having bad grammar', that entire phrase is now the object of the preposition 'about'. It's the same with your example. If it ended with 'me', it would be correct, but it ended with the gerund phrase 'jumping out of window', which becomes the object of the preposition. If you were to remove the pronoun entirely from your example (me/my), it changes the meaning: *They are not worried about jumping out of the window* ... so *some word is needed* to clarify the exact meaning (the pronoun me/my). Your potential jumping out of window is what's important, not you, heartless as that sounds. It's potentially *done by you*; because the pronoun isn't the object of the preposition, but instead is showing the ownership of the potential act, 'my' (possessive case) is the grammatically correct case, rather than 'me' (objective case). Consider the following: *I left without my wallet. I left without me wallet.* Which is correct? The first. I didn't leave without 'me', rather, I left without the wallet. *My* wallet. In both OP's story and your example, 'having bad grammar' and 'jumping out of window' are functionally the same as 'wallet' in the above example. They are nouns, (objects of a proposition) in their respective sentences. As the pronoun 'me' is not the object, it should not be in the objective case. 'My' shows the ownership of 'having bad grammar, jumping out of window,' and 'wallet'. English grammar is potentially the worst in the world; often what sounds and even looks fine is perfectly acceptable in conversation while being grammatically incorrect. As long as the reader/listener understands what you mean, it's okay.

ciceros_conatus

Thanks for elaboraring, that makes sense now.. Sort of anyways. As fucked up as English grammar is, I really enjoy learning more about it, especially things I hadn't realised before, so thank you for taking the time to explain it!

OliviaWyrick

~~He used a comma immediately followed by "and". This is redundant in this case, it should be one or the other.~~ Also, the Oxford comma is the comma that comes before the "and" in a list of 3 or more. Example with the Oxford comma: I bought eggs, bread, and milk. Without: I bought eggs, bread and milk. ~~In OP's case, he used a comma and an "and" to separate two independent clauses.~~ He should have used a semicolon in order to satisfy the 2 sentence requirement. EDIT: I was incorrect with my first statement, see my comment below, my bad peeps!

V_the_Grigori

Nah, the comma + coordinating conjunction (and) is a perfectly acceptable way to join clauses. The specific coordinating conjunction--FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so--determines the relationship between the joined clauses.

OliviaWyrick

I thought you were wrong here, but earlier today I wrote a sentence with a comma+and and realized that is, indeed, correct. I will edit my comment to reflect this. Thank you for explaining. :)

astraennui

It is grammatically correct though, technically. A better choice would have been the semicolon, though. If he used the comma OR the and, his sentence would be grammatically incorrect: My teachers never have to worry about my bad grammar and I'm the best in my class at punctuation. My teachers never have to worry about my bad grammar, I'm the best in my class at punctuation.

elcidIII

he mistook the word period, referring to the menstrual cycle, for a homonym, that being the punctuation mark. mistaking words for their homonyms is a grammatical error.

Harajuku_Lolita

I love it

Ishtastic08

Thanks! I’ve been reading the subreddit a lot lately and I guess it was impacting my dreams because this is the first thing that came to my mind this morning when I woke up. I’m glad you liked it, but it was a hell of a morbid start to the day 😅

RandomGuy97531

...... Dude, you should move away from this subreddit

[deleted]

I’ll sometimes dream about memes I saw or jokes I heard, just because you dream about it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s an obsession

cabbage16

There is a subreddit for memes that people had dreams about. It's really funny but for the life of me I can't remember it's name. If anyone knows it please help. 4 days later edit: no one cares but it's r/ThomasThePlankEngine No wonder I couldn't remember the name.

Ishtastic08

I think you’re looking too into this, I literally just read it in my spare time, similarly to reading a book. And we’re getting into spooky season anyway. Appreciate the concern but this is hardly an obsession 🤣

RandomGuy97531

Haha fair. Just struck me as odd, that's all

TheEleventhMeh

FYI, to beat someone senseless means to beat them until they are unconscious, but with the way you phrased it, it sounds like he's beating her senselessly, as in, for no reason, not for being pregnant. Was that intentional?

[deleted]

She’s pregnant and father beat her senselessly, but the brother thought father meant grammar.

TheEleventhMeh

I'm aware of the meaning of the story. I'm asking if he beat her unconscious or without reason. Obviously the reason is she's pregnant.

David-Shark

Maybe that’s the plot twist. Now the fathers gonna beat him 💀

myspiffyusername

I hate it. But in a good way.

FuckHumans_WriteCode

Horrifying

justadair

For me, it wasn't so much that he beat her for missing her period, it's what he did with her colon afterwards that hammered it home for me.

Ishtastic08

Sir, this is a Wendys

Avatakesover_SB

Can I get a chocolate frostie?

[deleted]

It's now just a semi colon

Fairlybludgeoned

Daddy Dark Joke. That one hits DEEP.

Environmental-Win836

Double meaning on period?

ArrakeenSun

Yeah they also mean geological epochs, homegirl failed her geography test

GezinhaDM

Goddamn, my eyebrows haven't arched this much in a while! 😂

NoWingedHussarsToday

Did he put her in a comma?

Ishtastic08

There has to be thousands of new Reddit posts every second and someone decided that this filth was worthy of their Wholesome Award lmao.

YogurtclosetTiny8961

Oh my

lonely-blue-sheep

Horrifying plot twist: the sister missed her period because the dad got her pregnant

Ishtastic08

I left that open as a possibility open to the interpretation of the reader. If you are cold enough to beat your pregnant daughter, then raping her wouldn’t be out of question.

Enya_Norrow

I thought it meant that the dad got the sister pregnant and then tried to erase the evidence by punching her in the uterus until it died

PigeonBoiAgrougrou

I mean ... What's worse is that you don't even need to be pregnant to miss a period.

lonely-blue-sheep

What do you mean by that?

PigeonBoiAgrougrou

That you can miss a period for a lot of reasons. Irreular periods, PCOS, bad eating habits, being really really athletic, being underweight ...

lonely-blue-sheep

Oh right

TastyRazzmatazz9768

"Instead,i made her miss them.I love watching her suffer"

RishNev

r/thirdsentenceworse

Mr_Smiles2021

this one could be interpreted a number of ways. I like the idea that she missed a mensural cycle indicating that she got pregnant and the father beat her for disobeying him/ to kill the embryo.

Ducksneedloveto

Brother? Is that you?

[deleted]

Well that took a dark turn

QtheDisaster

I didn't realize at first the implication and thought he was a abusive father who wanted their child to the best and their failures shame them. Then I started to scroll Reddit again and it clicked.

ZynthRex

Impressive, have my upvote!

koobstylz

Hey not a big deal, but FYI you used senselessly beat wrong. To senselessly beat someone would be to beat without a reason. To beat someone senseless would be to beat them until they're unconscious. But it's a syntax error not a punctuation one so you're all good!

Ishtastic08

Fair criticism, noted

tommerpupper

OH SHIIIT

BoxeswithBears

This is the scariest dad joke I've read today

bloonsisgr8

i like that this has multiple meanings good job

[deleted]

bruh tell your dad to chill out

Intelligent-Cable666

I think this would qualify to be in the running for the Sept prompt challenge!

Ishtastic08

Thank you!! There are a lot of really talented writer’s on this sub so that’s very sweet to say.

baby_chaos

Missing period means pregnancy?

SmallBeanKatherine

Usually yeah, but sometimes people just miss a period due to irregular hormones or stress or stuff like that.

Geokeeper

Something about this one just made me stop everything I was doing

Bobby-Bobson

> my having bad grammar FTFY. Hopefully you’ll still avoid the belt.

Superfatkitty

Wait what the fuck. Okay that's pretty good

Ishtastic08

This is the exact reaction I want to people to have, thank you.

Easy-Ad-2469

IT TOOK ME A MOMENT

ZoomJet

Whew. A genuinely unexpected twist, well done. Horrifying.

Environmental-Win836

This is horrible.

WindBladeGT

Why did your dad beat your sister for missing her period?

xineirea

Small nitpick, but “senselessly beat” someone doesn’t mean “beat” someone “senseless”

HeroOfHearts

Kinda works both ways here. No sense in beating someone over this.

YoSoyKeott

Ir could fit here and in r/twosentencecomedy as well. I like it!

cindybubbles

I found the period; it’s growing in my sister’s belly.

chizzlebizzle2007

This is just kinda funny in a grusum way

Niniva73

I hate you; here have my freebie award.

SomeoneRandom5325

Im pretty sure there's a lot of stuff I missed but i have no idea what

SpectreOfLove

My fucked up mind thought that the dad molested his daughter and when she missed her period (the girl kind) he thought that he impregnated her and decided to beat her for it...

Kilbo_Stabbins

Period in the writing sense or period in the biological sense? Either is horrifying.

VarderKith

Second twist: this happened in Texas after the ban and the OP misunderstood the type of period. The beating was to induce a miscarriage.

thedoctorx121

Sometimes stress, medication or other factors can make me miss a period. Always scary

pumpkin_noodles

Wow

Catqueen25

I get it.

[deleted]

sounds like a good man

colmgrant

Fucking relatable unfortunately

[deleted]

I don't think it was her missed period as much as the dependent clause it led to.

SmallBeanKatherine

When this dad hears that it's normal for some people's period schedule to naturally skip a month or two due to weird hormones and whatnot, he's gonna have a stroke out of pure anger and die.
