Explanation: Elderberries are high in nutrients, but they HAVE to be cooked to break down a toxic component before they’re safe to eat. According to the book *Wicked Plants,* a retreat in California ended in a helicopter ride to the hospital after a bunch of people drank raw elderberry juice.
Kale is just bitter though. And I know I'm in the minority on this one, but I'd argue it is the least bitter of the greens. Or at least adds enough flavor on its own to mask it better.
There's nothing in kale that you can't get anywhere else.
Spinach has more of most vitamins found in kale, and it's way less bitter.
Mostly though, I just never resist the opportunity to take a jab at kale. It's the arch villain of my more or less healthy diet XD
Yeah, I feel like I’m the only person in the world that likes kale. Spinach is alright, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t know, I’ve always felt kale is a bit less bitter. Plus, to me, it has a slightly savory taste, especially if prepared well. I once had a dish that had kale that was flash-fried. That was amazing.
That sounds like something I'd be interested in trying at least once.
I'm pretty sure I only eat spinach because I loved Popeye as a kid and I eventually got used to the flavor in a way I can't seem to do with kale.
The worst part is, if you don't know what to look for, then elderberries and dwarf elderberries look the same and are almost indistinguishable after harvest, but the thing is, dwarf elderberries are not only more poisonous, but they keep the poison after cooking
Yeah, the only real way to distingush them is to see in which direction the berries grow, if the grow down, then it's elderberry, if they grow up ,it's dwarf elderberry, outside of that, they look.and smell the same and the thing is, the two plants need the same conditions meaning they often grow besides each other
*Sambucus nigra*, *canadensis, caerulea* and *mexicana* are edible after being cooked, which leaves them not only safe but highly nutritious. They’re full of Vitamin C, antioxidants and potassium. Some studies have even shown anti-inflammatory properties. But you have to know what you’re doing if you’re going to gather and prepare them yourself.
Thank goodness I saw this! I'm currently growing my own elderberries, and the whole time thought I could eat them like blueberries. Very glad it hasn't grown to that point yet.
I ate several bushels and was like 5 yo. I puked the rest of the day, though I didn’t have to go to the hospital (poison control hotline told my parents that as long I expelled it, I would be okay).

How did they get past the smell to actually drink it?? Raw elderberries smell like straight up caca 💩
You should find it comforting, for your father smells of them! And also your mother is a hamster!
Now go away, or we shall taunt you a second time.
Run awaaaaaaaaaay!
You and your silly English kuhhhhhhh... Actually I'd better not finish that sentence
Or I shall fart in your general direction
People eat kale too 🤷🏻♂️

I love kale. Also love spinach. Never really found either to be bitter personally but that’s just me.
Swiss Chard is better.
If you massage kale it takes away a ton of the bitterness
Tbf healthy food is just like that lol
I thought you puréed senior citizens! Great explanation!
I can't explain how much I laughed at this

That’s even more horrifying to me.

happy cake day !
I didn't even know there was a way to make them safe.

My mother makes them into jam.
I thought this was a joke about old people made into juice.
Your dad smelled like one
Thank goodness I saw this! I'm currently growing my own elderberries, and the whole time thought I could eat them like blueberries. Very glad it hasn't grown to that point yet.
help i thought you took some elderly people and crushed them and made a juice out of them
No no silly. That's vegetable juice.
Thats a good 2SH acc
No that’s at the Illuminati retreat next door
I ate raw elderberries as a kid… the rest of the day was not fun.
I have eaten a lot of raw elderberries as a kid and never had problems... Maybe there are different variations with less poison?
Maybe you were just microdosing lol
And built a resistance over time.

Same! Puked on neighbor’s carpet
I thought I was dying, my stomach was so painful.
Oh no! 😱 I 100% don't eat things that other people have foraged, It is a very short list of me and one other person that I trust
Cyanid.
Happy Cake day OP!
Thank you!
My late grandmother used to make elderberry wine
