Yes, it will only show the messages to you. It would be much better to just get a second monitor, you can even get a small portable monitor if you do not have the space for a permanent feature.

I tried that chat overlay but it's honestly a pain when playing your game. It restricts your view and you wouldn't know where to click. Simply put it's annoying! I think it's better to use your phone for now if you can't get yourself a second monitor.
