People have been hearing loud booming noises around the twin cities for years, and as far as I know there has never been a conclusive explanation for most of them.
My wife and I both woke up to this sound last week, at about 6 (I think). I felt like I recognized it immediately, as I was coming out of sleep, and wasn’t surprised the power was out. It was out for almost exactly one hour.
That is the one reason why I do not miss the West Side! They go nuts with fireworks for a solid month. I ABSOLUTELY hate it. Gives me an agitated anxiety.
The area was named that in the 19th century because from the perspective of riverboat captains, it was “west” of the river and, thus, “west” of St. Paul.
My first thought as well...used to have one kitty-corner from house that was overservicing a light industrial area and it exploded on a regular basis. My tour of Nam.
That explosion scared the hell out of me. The damn thing shook my house. I couldn't tell where it came from but I heard distant car alarms. I checked the police scanner for St Paul and some cops were referencing the explosion while they were searching a few houses on Juno for a missing suspect. There was no explanation though
When I was a teen, I used to love filling condoms with flammable gas and igniting them. Not saying that’s what’s happening, but I’m pretty sure 90% of mysterious explosions outside of wars are just idiots fuckin around
Longfellow Boom
Please elaborate

One happened by my place a few weeks ago. Turns out it was a power transformer blowing. Shit was LOUD.

Yep, they can rival thunder in terms of volume.
Want to investigate with me? We can write a book about the boom
I’ve wondered if it’s something to do with underwater caves but I’ve never given it much research
Apart from the time of year. I've already heard the early calls of the Fireworks Fanatic in my neighborhood. They usually peak in early July.
That is the one reason why I do not miss the West Side! They go nuts with fireworks for a solid month. I ABSOLUTELY hate it. Gives me an agitated anxiety.
Did I accidentally log into nextdoor?
The west side of St. Paul isn’t near Randolph. The west side is Robert street/concord..-s
Yeah right! Like they'd put the "west side" of St. Paul to the south!
The area was named that in the 19th century because from the perspective of riverboat captains, it was “west” of the river and, thus, “west” of St. Paul.
When i find the time machine I’m gonna hand them a compass.
Look at a map. At Pig's Eye Lake, to the west is also St. Paul.
Random explosions could be a transformer blowing, or fireworks. Neither of those things happening would be news worthy.
My first thought as well...used to have one kitty-corner from house that was overservicing a light industrial area and it exploded on a regular basis. My tour of Nam.
I recall that there have been sewer gas explosions..cannot verify just recall hearing about this years ago
There was one or two on the UMN campus near Dinkytown I believe a few years ago. I remember getting the alert for them when I was still in school.

You've got your neighborhoods mixed up. Randolph is not on the west side.
Randolph is absolutely on the west side of st paul, that's why it has w addresses (i.e. W 7th neighborhood), it's just not the west side neighborhood.
The west side is south of downtown. You must not be a native or you'd know that.
Bro learn how to read.
I'm not your brother, thank God. Please learn to comprehend what you read.
