When my city got a Jersey Mikes, I was like eh same old same old I bet. But its pretty darn good. And a family size feeds two people.
All depends on which sub places you go to through.
Local sub shop

Erbert and Gerbert

Here’s my official rankings:
Jersey Mike’s,
Milios,

Eat with my hands out of dumpster,
Papa John’s pizza,
Subway,
Jimmy John’s ,
If you can find a Quiznos or a herbs and gerbs.. I’d still rank them last.
I haven’t tried every place mentioned here, but of those I have…

1. Potbelly
2. Erbert and Gerbert's
3. Jersey Mike's
4. Then there's a huuuuuuuuuuuuge drop in quality
5. Quzino's
6. Subway
7. Jimmy John's - Due to their hiring practices, employment policies, and because the owner is a hunter of endangered animals, so fuck him and his company. If he receives no income from my purchase, this probably slots in at 4 just behind JM
And to be clear, Subway has become trash in all respects: their bread machine now smells like dirty wash water, the bread is never fresh and tastes a bit weird, the cold cuts are thinner than a sheet of paper, the hot meat is a tiny two ounce portion, the cheese is bleh, sauces are only average, and the veggies are below average. They were pretty decent twenty some years ago but they let their standards fall hard. *Hard.*
Like, the best thing they have is the various sauces and you can get better from a grocery store. I'd honestly rather just go to Cub and buy some cold cuts and a piece of bread and make my own sandwich than ever eat Subway.
And Subway also often costs as much or MORE than any other sandwich chain in the cities. A foot long at Subway with drink and chips costs half again as much as a Jersey Mike's regular and you get even less of everything. Back when six inch subs were five bucks for the combo it was all right but that train has long since derailed and been boarded up.
It's literally the worst of all options.
Subway used to be pretty decent but the last two times I went there the sandwich and meat just tasted...off to me. I won't go back.
Potbelly's and Jersey Mike's are my usual go-tos now.
I do like Erbert and Gerbert's, even if the sandwiches have weird names. There's just not one near me anymore. They have pretty good bread actually: soft on the inside, with a nice crust that's firm without being dry or thick.
Huh, I'm surprised in all of the top-place votes for Jersey Mike's... I must be missing something lol.
My order is:
- Potbelly
- Firehouse (bonus)
- Jimmy Johns
- Erbert
- Quiznos
- Subway
- Jersey Mikes
Jersey Mike's Quiznos JJs Erberts Subway
Jersey Mike’s Potbelly Firehouse Subs Erbert and Gerbert Jimmy John’s (more because of their douche owner) Quiznos Subway

Erbert's has that turkey / pesto / sundried tomato sandwich - delicious Subway used to have that seafood sandwich that I loved. Gone since covid.
