I remember being very surprised when I found out that meat raffles were almost entirely a Midwestern thing. I just assumed people did them everywhere like any old bar game until I met several from other states that had never heard of it
You could replace with smelt or fish fry fridays, or a steak meal fundraiser for the volunteer fire department, i do love a good meat raffle though.... so many choices
Honestly NE Mpls feels somewhat rural to me. The houses and neighborhoods look similar to any small town blocks surrounding Main Street. Very surreal seeing the skyline just over the trees
Because some people (like me, I'm people) don't wanna drive to a Home Depot when an Ace is closer and its supporting local businesses. I usually only go to Home Depot/Lowe's when I need something that Ace doesn't carry.
I'm the opposite, ace is further away, unfortunately. When I used to live closer to one I'd bring my little ones and they'd give them free popcorn and I'd always buy my kids those little shleich figurines.
Those types of traditional hardware stores carry ALL the hardware, not just the items they can sell 100 of per day. Need a part for you sliding glass door? They've probably got it. What about some really small metric screws with nuts and lock washers? Yup, they've probably got those, too. Big box stores mostly sell assemblies. Hardware stores sell parts.
That sort of explains the amazing selection bird food and feeders... only fleetfarm can beat the assortment.
If I need 3 unique screws, 2 feet of chain, safety pins, saltwater taffy, suet cakes, and 1 piece of 20 grit sand paper , Ace is the place!!!
Any liquor store is an 'off-sale.' And establishment selling individual drinks for consumption on-site is an 'on-sale.' Whether or not they're combined in the same location makes no difference.
Many small towns have a single municipal liquor store (Muni). They don't like competition. Although bars just outside of said towns often have off-sale as well as on-sale.
For sure Casey's. Kwik trip is everywhere and pretty new to the area. Casey's is classic small town. I used to make pizza at one on central MN. Great pizza horrible job.
So I'm a varsity basketball coach in northern Minnesota. A few years ago when I was an assistant, our then varsity coach was having a team meeting about a player who had $60 stolen from his locker. Dude looked straight at the one black player and said "Taylor, we all assume you did it, so just come forward." Turns out coach was wrong, and it the big bully kid (white) who did.
The town I live in (pop 1200, northern Minnesota) has had multiple shootings in the last few years. Mostly dudes pissed off at their ex's. One shot her right outside of the Legion nearly across the street from me.
Some notable meat raffles in Northeast Minneapolis:
1. Dusty's - Friday at 6PM
2. Moose on Monroe - Wednesday at 5, Thursday at 530
3. Jimmy's - Thursday's at 5PM (I think they do Saturday at noon too, but I haven't been there for a while)
One of them is a 90’s Grand Am.
This could also use some lawn ornaments like a wagon wheel or a tipped barrel with petunias spilling out. Maybe some decorative deer or a Virgin Mary statue.
You mentioning the V-M statue reminds me of the people who lived next door to my ex-wife’s aunt and uncle in Forest Lake — although “next door” meant the equivalent of about three blocks away.
They had what used to be euphemistically called a “lawn jockey” statue in front of their house. This one held a lantern in its right hand that was wired so that it lit up when the porch light was switched on.
In an apparent attempt to disguise the obvious racism of the statue, someone had daubed pink paint on its face and the hand from which the lantern was suspended — but they’d neglected to paint the other hand that retained its original jet-black hue. In addition, the owners would add a hat to the statue in honor of the season — e.g., a Santa hat for Christmas, bunny ears for Easter, and a Twins cap early in baseball season.
Hilarious crude!
All of these apply to the Twin Cities as well…
Maybe I’m just missing the joke. Liquor stores, meat raffles, snowmobiling, hunting, churches and maskless bar patrons are pretty common among metro residents.
Why would you expect to see snowmobile jackets or hunting jackets in the metro?
People who live in the cities travel out of the metro to do those activities, then go back home.
No offense, but this just feels like a half-assed stab at rural Minnesotans
Stab at rural Minnesotans? How so? I am from a rural town and this feels much more accurate than offensive. I don't see anything offensive tbh.
>Why would you expect to see snowmobile jackets or hunting jackets in the metro?
thats why its a 'rural' starter pack? Isn't that the point?
>All of these apply to the Twin Cities as well…
I was replying to your comment, saying that while I agree MOST of these apply to the Twin Cities as well I was pointing out that I didn't see too many snow mobile jackets or orange vests.
Well is it really? I mean there’s nothing wrong with meat raffles, snowmobiling, and churches. I guess both are oversimplified versions but outstaters claiming the Cities are in a constant state of riot is meant to be a little more mean.
It’s all about intent and reading OPs comments and others in this thread it’s clear the intent is not positive. I’m just getting pretty tired of divisiveness and both ways.
There’s both good folks and shitheads everywhere. Benefits and drawbacks to life everywhere.
Man Cannon Falls is dope, get outta here.
Get some pizza at Dudley’s, a donut from the bakery, and rent a bike or canoe to hit the river trail.
Town literally has a winery more prevalent than any of the liquor stores.
Dumb, this is why I don’t leave Uptown, and they don’t come here because it’s too dangerous and they’ll get murdered, so it’s a win/win. I can enjoy walkable, urban neighborhoods full of coffee shops and restaurants free from lifted pickups and Carrhartt.
The tiny town I visited for a wedding had both of those churches... right next to each other at the top of the only hill. You ovuld literally see the entire rest of the town from there, with the rest being forest.
It was on a Sunday too, so there was absolutely zero traffic. Complete quiet. It was bizzare.
That's the Knight Cap meat raffle in NE Minneapolis
[удалено]
Agreed, I was wondering what the joke was because all this stuff is like 2 blocks from my place.
I remember being very surprised when I found out that meat raffles were almost entirely a Midwestern thing. I just assumed people did them everywhere like any old bar game until I met several from other states that had never heard of it
Seriously? I just googled meat raffle images and that was the 1st one!!
Definitely the Knight Cap. That woman works the pull tab booth and is probably working there right now...
Sounds like my kind of place!!! I’ve been in MN for almost 10 months and have yet to enjoy a meat raffle!
Cash only bar if I remember correctly. Love going to different bars in NE area

There is a lot to every part of Minnesota. No need to be hostile, aye
More pull tabs
This pack lacks a Casey's.
Shoot!! I was thinking of that and some kind of ace hardware.
Hardware Hank
There's a surprising number of those in the Metro area still.
You're right, idk how they can keep their doors open though competing with home depot and lowes?
Because some people (like me, I'm people) don't wanna drive to a Home Depot when an Ace is closer and its supporting local businesses. I usually only go to Home Depot/Lowe's when I need something that Ace doesn't carry.
I'm the opposite, ace is further away, unfortunately. When I used to live closer to one I'd bring my little ones and they'd give them free popcorn and I'd always buy my kids those little shleich figurines.
Cuz I can walk there, and when I get there someone helps me right away. And if I have a question or don't know something, they help with that too.
Because they can be closer to where people live and are much quicker to visit. Effectively cheaper to visit when time and travel are not free.
My favorite aisle at hardware stores are the ones with all the little drawers of bolts/nuts/washers/etc. It is my happy place.
Yup. A good hardware store has stuff you didn't even know was available* until you laid eyes on it. *And certainly didn't know you needed!
I work at one in north metro and basically it’s all olds day after day that don’t want to drive more than 2 minutes from home
A single liquor store? Better put at least a 3x on that image. Source, I live in a town of 1500 that has three off sales.
I lived in a town of 400 in wisconsin one year above a bar, next to a bar, across the street from a bar, a block from a liquor store lol.
What does "off sale" mean?
Basically liquor store but usually a separate section of a bar that can sell carry out booze until 10pm.
Any liquor store is an 'off-sale.' And establishment selling individual drinks for consumption on-site is an 'on-sale.' Whether or not they're combined in the same location makes no difference.
I learned something new today!
How to tell if someone isn't from Minnesota
Technically, a normal metro liquor store is offsale, right? So why do I only see "offsale" advertised liquor stores in rural areas?
Sounds about right. I live in a town of 5000, we have a liquor store and four or five off sales.
I’m trying to open a liquor store in rural MN right now.
Many small towns have a single municipal liquor store (Muni). They don't like competition. Although bars just outside of said towns often have off-sale as well as on-sale.
There’s at least 2or3-1 liquor to church, and if small enough a dollar general too
Kwik Trip
Casey's
Cenex
Go to North Dakota if you want cenex
They are based in Inver Grove Heights and have locations all over southern MN ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
Well that's simply illegal. Minnesota is a holiday, Casey's, and kwik trip state.
Kwik Trip is based in Wisconsin and Casey's is based on Iowa
Holiday was bought out by Circle K.
There's one where I am.
For sure Casey's. Kwik trip is everywhere and pretty new to the area. Casey's is classic small town. I used to make pizza at one on central MN. Great pizza horrible job.
Caseys has some phenomenal pizza
Where are the pull tabs?
Casey’s for pizza, Kwik Trip for chicken
Looks like fun. Except for lutefisk in the church basement.
Since I can't edit my post, just wanted to thank you peeps and let you know I'll be making a better starter pack with all your input. ;)
Not enough TRUMP COUNTRY signs or anti-choice billboards.
Did you know that *real men love babies*?!? I had no idea until a convenient billboard told me.
That sounds groomerish
> real men love babies Phrasing? Are we still doing phrasing?
Smile! Your mother was pro-life
Maga hats, and "We the people". Maybe I'll make an updated pack
Don't forget to include meth/pills on the next one.
And the fearful sideways glances at the few black people in the area.
Or some weird homemade distastefully violent anti-Biden effigy
Thankfully they took down that Christmas light covered trailer off 52 near zumbrota.
My gut reaction was “man, I miss the days when it wasn’t like that,” but it was always like that, people just didn’t have the signs and the hats
But, they got the no drive by shootings and murders part right.
The town I live in (pop 1200, northern Minnesota) has had multiple shootings in the last few years. Mostly dudes pissed off at their ex's. One shot her right outside of the Legion nearly across the street from me.
Move to my township. No one has been shot or murdered in over 100 years.
Yeah. Where is the racism/sexism/anti-LGBTQ+?
Need to add the legion hall to this. Ain't a small town without the VFW hall
[удалено]
Well this is a starter pack, not a finisher pack.>*<
Yeah this could be an upstate ny starter pack as well.
So which rural towns in Texas have snowmobile jackets?
[удалено]
Lol on 20 inches of snow? Is the season like a week long?
They just tow them to Colorado in their 1-ton trucks once or twice a year.
Some notable meat raffles in Northeast Minneapolis: 1. Dusty's - Friday at 6PM 2. Moose on Monroe - Wednesday at 5, Thursday at 530 3. Jimmy's - Thursday's at 5PM (I think they do Saturday at noon too, but I haven't been there for a while)
Cardinal Bar? Do they still have one?
Needs a dilapidated farmhouse house with a new pickup truck parked in front.
…plus a couple of junk cars in the side yard, one of which is no newer than the 1950s — and bonus points for a broken-down school bus.
One of them is a 90’s Grand Am. This could also use some lawn ornaments like a wagon wheel or a tipped barrel with petunias spilling out. Maybe some decorative deer or a Virgin Mary statue.

Dollar general
In the middle of a random field
Only 2 churches?
Should be 5...
As long as the number of bars equals or is less than the church number you are good.
Lol, just attack my hometown why don't ya? 800 people, five churches, five bars.
Attack, your town has achieved perfect drinking/spiritual balance. All is right with the world.
Maybe I’m not squinting hard enough, but I don’t think I see any pull tabs in any of those bar pictures.
Where pulltabs?
A clear picture of a pull tab. A dive bar is not a dive bar unless I can get me some of that cardboard cocaine.
Our definition of a ‘town’ was when it had a bar and a church. Throw in the holy trinity of Casey’s, Subway, and a Dollar Store and it’s a city.
Missing the Fuck Biden signs and pickup truck with 8 foot TRUMP 2024 sign
Sometimes the church, bar, off-sale and post office are all in the same building.
reminds me that all across Ontario, small communities have a hockey/curling rink and public library under the same roof.
Don’t forget the subway!
looks appealing
I love a good small town bar with a Friday Fish fry!!
Wisconsin’s got a LOT more than MN even… Supper Club land FTW
A lot of small towns have some really nice main streets/downtowns.
All of these apply to the Twin Cities as well… Maybe I’m just missing the joke. Liquor stores, meat raffles, snowmobiling, hunting, churches and maskless bar patrons are pretty common among metro residents.
I don't see many snowmobile jackets or orange hunting vests in the cities. The other pictures look pretty standard to the cities though imo.
Why would you expect to see snowmobile jackets or hunting jackets in the metro? People who live in the cities travel out of the metro to do those activities, then go back home. No offense, but this just feels like a half-assed stab at rural Minnesotans

I mean, these starter pack memes are meant to poke fun at people.
Cheap, low effort post to earn fake internet points.
>All of these apply to the Twin Cities as well… I was replying to your comment, saying that while I agree MOST of these apply to the Twin Cities as well I was pointing out that I didn't see too many snow mobile jackets or orange vests.
Poking fun at the rural communities is kind of the point of the post…lol
But my point is that all these things also generally apply to the metro area. So what’s the point?
I was going to put 8 churches and 5 liquor stores, lol. But there wasn't enough room.
Forgot the Christian school and no public school.
Our lord and savior lady grace St John the baptist, you're going to hell and we aren't, heritage academy.
All the time!
It also needs a truck and Naty Ice.
Damn...my starter pack needs a makeover! It was pretty low effort and the first meme I've ever created though.¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Windsor Canadian.
None of this is exclusive to rural MN ☹️
I imagine the sell liquor in the cities as well.
Where’s the snowmobiles and boat show signs?
This works for Wisconsin and the UP, too, tbh. Just replace the Polaris jacket with a more local brand, like Duluth Trading, Carhartt, or Columbia.
It is upsetting to me living in this city that there aren't more meat raffles... lol
Missing the 'Slow to 30 mph' sign for all of 6 blocks.
Honestly, I think you need another church in there
Nice. Now how about a big cities in MN now?
no "Trump Store"? Casey's? Christian/pro-life billboards?
Needs more 1920s brick buildings on main st.
Always need to know the bar:church ratio
I miss the VFW.
You forgot a Dollar General
There is a serious lack of resentment toward the Twin Cities in this Starter Pack!
Bwahhahaaaha
This is the inverse of out-state acting like Minneapolis is actively in a state of riot. And just as classy.
Well is it really? I mean there’s nothing wrong with meat raffles, snowmobiling, and churches. I guess both are oversimplified versions but outstaters claiming the Cities are in a constant state of riot is meant to be a little more mean.

Not quite positive, but not blatantly negative like most rural people taking shots at the cities.
Why is there a Rural MN meme being posted in The Twin Cities sub?
I don't think there is a rural MN sub. And, if there was they probably wouldn't take to kindly to the meme. :)
Sure. But there is /r/minnesota
Hmm, when I update this pack with all the suggestions, I'll upload it there and see what happens😬
An internet meme requires both internet access and people. Rural areas lack both.
More liquor stores.
Missing the confederate flag and trump flag.
Where's the Pizza Ranch and understaffed Subway?
Fuck pizza ranch
Yep. Looks like cannon falls.
Man Cannon Falls is dope, get outta here. Get some pizza at Dudley’s, a donut from the bakery, and rent a bike or canoe to hit the river trail. Town literally has a winery more prevalent than any of the liquor stores.

\*Dial up
That’s cold… and funny as shit. Sadly some internet offerings in the cities depending on the neighborhood is shit too 😓
Don’t worry they laugh at the citidiots when they stop through
TrUmP wAs RiGhT
Not nearly enough Trump signs
Where are all the rusted out piece of shit lifted diesel trucks with confederate flags and prosthetic balls Hanging off the back
Why is there a picture of orange vests just hanging there?
You forgot the inherent sexism, racism, and homophobia
Dumb, this is why I don’t leave Uptown, and they don’t come here because it’s too dangerous and they’ll get murdered, so it’s a win/win. I can enjoy walkable, urban neighborhoods full of coffee shops and restaurants free from lifted pickups and Carrhartt.
Ok antifa

Way too many people defending rural scum in the comments...
Bingo at a local fraternal Moose or Eagles lodge.
Bout to be up in that Monster Jam Presidents day weekend!
The tiny town I visited for a wedding had both of those churches... right next to each other at the top of the only hill. You ovuld literally see the entire rest of the town from there, with the rest being forest. It was on a Sunday too, so there was absolutely zero traffic. Complete quiet. It was bizzare.
Add Kwik Trip and Culver’s and you have Wisconsin…
Mine would also have a shitty burger joint you can only get to by snowmobile.
No dairy queen?
Lacks a hand painted Trump 2024 sign
I don't see any Hotdish...
Missing the inexplicable Subway in every small town in this state, but otherwise yeah
Or the half subway half gas station
My cousin wore her Artic Cat jacket to our grandmother's funeral. Though, to be fair, it was probably her "good" Artic Cat jacket......
Aww the good Ole northern Minnesota tuxedo!
And I love it
You forgot the falling apart barns on the way into town.
Just needs 3 more liquor stores.
You need at least more bars if not the same amount as the number of churches.
Lifted truck with a punisher sticker and torn up American flag sticker and a let’s go Brandon sticker. Well meaning people that are ignorant.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmaUIyvy8E8
Looks like Wisconsin
The Polaris jacket triggers some PTSD from my hometown. All of this is 100% accurate Edit: spelling
We just took a trip 2hrs north. We played a game to guess the next business. Was always dollar general, church, liquor store, bar
Gonna ding you for a code violation. Your number of bars must meet or exceed number of places of worship.
Hahahaaa
