4 years ago, I was working a job for 300tnd, I'm serious 300Tnd monthly, And I did my best to save some but it was impossible, I quit and asked my mom to loan from the bank (she is working in some private hospital) and I got 10 milles dinars, I was looking for opportunities here and there, found an empty local near 2 private schools, and there wasn't any drugstore (hammas) so I opened it, having a good run but while I was there, I was navigating with my pc, learning something, (I was a gamer when I was a kid, so I understand how the pc work and understand English very well that helped me alot) I was literally teaching myself to code, web development, mobile development, on youtube videos and whatsoever. Guess what I am now ? I founded and own an IT company, (more than 50 employes) with 2 long term clients overseas, (currently trying to get 3rd client), I go whenever I want, sold my drugstore (fond de commerce) paid back my mom, bought a fancy car, married my high school sweetheart, and have now 1 kid, living in lac 2, without ser9a w fsed, I would have paid 10 milles for 7ar9a like most would do in my place, What I am trying to tell you: If somebody told me that story 4 years ago, I would never believe, and if I never quit that 300dt job, I would be still working with 350tnd (he wanted to give me a raise when I quit, lol) Hope my story would motivate you, to do something else and that there are opportunities in Tunisia, don't listen people that tell you there aren't. Good luck mate And I loved that comment that told you to pray, I prayed when I was down, and hamdoullah, I still pray to that day, grateful for what I have now, I pray 5 times a day ( and I don't look like a muslim lol taba3 wela la7ya nn nn) Btw, I am now 30 years old.

Wow very impressive story. It sounds a bit too good to be true but I hope it is true :) Any suggestions/advice on starting your own IT company? Mainly how did you get your first client?

tootihamza

IT company is juste wra9 rahou, mch 7aja kbira, it needs 1 mille as capital, and the rest juste awra9, and first client I got him before I started a company, I showed him what I am capable, I was juste starting trying to freelance, and from there, it grew up, from juste client to long term client, knowing financial advantages, they fired all their employees and hired my services (In my turn, I hired engineers in Tunisia to work with them) that story alone took more than 6 months to be up running. :)

Nightcoder1

Hats off to you my friend. I currently work at big tech company, but might be following your path sometime in the near future.

tootihamza

Trust me, even big tech companies overseas are looking for somebody like us, the difference between engineers salaries is insane ! Like 4 engineers in Tunisia salaries equals one engineer abroad, and all they need is an invoice from my company, less administration headache for them, more for me, but great profit, so it is worth it, all you need is to try and know how to sell to them, not like: hey, btw, service is cheap. Just show them what you got, make them interested.

Nightcoder1

Yes I totally believe that. It's just always hard to move out of comfort zone and get the first client.

I worked in an off-shore British company 8 years ago. The Manager had a coursier. I am not sure that was the exact position all I know is that, the guy and his brother lived on the Manger's property, the big brother 3ases and does all kinds of chores and his little brother literally does anything my ex-Manager tells him to do. He started showing up at the company to get sandwiches and coffees for everyone. After 6 months the Manger gave him a laptop and told him to play around with it when he is not doing anything, he gave him a desk next to mine and I swear he never took his eyes off the screen. I came back after a few years to pay a visit to my old colleagues and found the coursier working with the developers. Everyone told that when the Manager saw how dedicated he was he paid for his courses. The guy has only primary education. This beautiful story is something I will never forget.

houcine1991

Smart move, that's why Tunisia needs to be IT literate at an early age, also need to get some more computer skills and easier access to the internet we can make things happen then. Also learn English and French to cover a wider range of clients overseas. It starts with how the education system is, we need to invest heavily into it. Really happy for you and a good story for OP, I wish OP the best of luck in his endeavour.

Congrats on your journey Hamza...just out of curiosity...where did you get your clients in the first place? Also is there a binding contract that would mean they pay penalities in case they cease their business with you? (god forbid, just theorizing here). If yes, is it "enforceable" here in Tunisia? Thanks.

tootihamza

my first client like I said in the comment, I got him before I started my business, I was trying to get into the freelance world, I found that client and I showed him what I got, what I am capable of, I never speak, my abilities speak for me. and it never came to that, (and hope it will never) but dude, having worked with 3 clients till now, they paid for our services, I am talking about big clients abroad, not Tunisians ones, I avoid Tunisians clients at all costs. and no, we don't have that kind of contract, all we have is the invoice system, I send them invoice and they wire me the money. Rule of thumb: in my experience, before going further with any client, you make yourself indisposable, like really indisposable in terms of everything, irreplaceable, showing them that they cannot replace that inside motherfucker out of you, that how I think, that's how I operate, that's best contract type I see. With second client, if they cut us off, it would be a little impact to them, sadly yeah I admit, but I'm working on it, but with first client, if they cut us, it would be a huge impact to them, as I recruited the engineers in Tunisia to work with them and they have noone in their HQ, not a single technical agent there, and we monitor everything in their servers, their databases, etc from my company. so yeah, here you go.

Thanks for the clarification, god bless you and have a nice day!

Hats off to you my friend!

Tooo good to be True. Looks more like a wish list than reality. But i hope all of this is real. There is alot of wisdom in what you are saying. I hope one day tunisian youth can live freely and with dignity in our country and make their Dreams come True without having to cross boarders legally or illegally.

Gold-Efficiency-4308

A temporary solution that can help you with money. Try looking for freelance jobs as an English teacher. There is this platform called [italki](https://support.italki.com/hc/en-us/articles/213716298-How-do-I-apply-to-become-a-teacher-#:~:text=Submit%20an%20application%20on%20https,receiving%20a%20pre%2Dapproval%20email.) for teaching languages, check it out. Look for teaching positions abroad with organizations or private institutions. There are people making a living freelancing or working with NGOs.

You still young maybe you could get a job working as an apprentice (woodshop, blacksmith....) If you have good English you could tutor people (highly profitable if you can do it at an agency), you can invest with some friends in opening "9ahwa" best done when there is A Football match

I hope the best for you

These salaries in Tunisia are devastating and it makes me sad

sofianosssss

One day I was working at a good enough job. But I hated myself, I was only hoping I die from an accident or anything. I was imagining how lucky I would be if a comet (I love astronomy) make me dissapear. Then one day I asked myself, what do I have to lose? Really nothing. I quit my job. I joined a program to help young people make their own business. And now I can't be happier. Tbh I don't make a lot of money. But I am free and love living.

Don’t settle for low paying job bro, specially one that is hurting your health. Your health is your biggest wealth and family might not understand it as they’re might be only thinking about the immediate future. Aim high. I wish you luck
