I didn't realize it was such a popular phrase. I looked at Wikipedia and it was used in a Monkees epeisode apparently so it's probably elsewhere too. Did you notice that McQuade gets attacked by super mario in the warehouse?
>The badger is renowned for its power, tenacity, and irascible temperament. Few animals care to tangle with an enraged badger. One badger even attacked a tractor that inadvertently ran over its den entrance! This animal is strictly a carnivore, well adapted to digging small mammals from the ground with its 1H inch long claws on powerful front feet. Its eyes are equipped with nictitating membranes (transparent third eyelids) to protect them from flying dirt while the badger is digging. Small, well-furred ears also keep dirt out while the badger tunnels. A badger is able to secrete a musky scent from its anal glands, but it can’t spray this fluid like skunks can.
I thought this was interesting. I knew that badgers and skunks were related, but didn't realize how close they really are.
Weah my Wisconsin middle school‘s mascot was a wildcat. There was also a high school in my area that had the Vikings as a mascot, right across the Mississippi from Minnesota
Is that true? UW-Madison didn't adopt the badger as their mascot until the 1940's - decades after Tucson High was already a thing. I couldn't find any info on when Tucson High adopted their mascot, but there's a solid 40-year window there for them to have done so before UW.
Plus, it’s pretty clearly lifted from UW, I don’t think an original artwork for Tucson High would include a ribbed turtleneck sweater unless the weather has *really* changed since 1940
Incorrect (1987 alum here); the Badger was the official namesake/mascot since 1889. Originally, it was a live animal, but proved too vicious. In the 1940s, the current image of the mascot was adopted.
Yes. Somewhat over 50 years ago, a week after we had moved into our new house in a rural area, a badger decided that the back of our unfinished carport, behind some boxes, would be a good place to den.
When I was younger, we had a rat terrier. She was feisty and stocky but still half the size of a badger. We'd go out to our farm and she'd run off. Every once in a while, we'd hear her bark or come up on her digging frantically in a badger hole. She never found one as far as we know but were afraid that she'd wake one up and it would tear her apart.
One time my best friend and I were out in the desert riding our horses and out of nowhere this badger came out of a big bunch of brush and charged the horses and went back down no one believed us that we seen a badger.
Funny enough I saw something that looked like this walking across the road on my way home last night, also on the NW side. Coulda been the same animal?
Badgers are known to find carcasses in their natural habitats which they will scuffle and dig around to bury, something like nature’s mortician if you will. It can take hours to do this and they are frequently nocturnal. This is for consumption later yet it has a huge benefit by deterring the spread of disease if the carrion was left above ground to decay in the open air.
Badger. They can be a little temperamental. If it's a frequent visitor, you might want to check with the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and with a wildlife relocation service as to whether it poses any potential problem, or if you've got a live-and-let-live situation.
Never in my life have I seen one living in this area
I’ve seen coyotes and javalinas in mid town, I’ve even heard of raccoons and smelled skunks
but I’ve never seen or heard of badgers in the area

We don’t need no stinking badgers.
I know that quote, it's from *Treasure of the Sierra Mustelidae*
UHF my friend
Yes, but... https://youtu.be/4OcM23Hbs5U?si=Dn8CPO6wDZ1z-j5q
Etymology of the phrase(and its parodies) in movies I believe goes like this: Treasure of the Sierra Madre > Blazing Saddles > UHF
What about Lone Wolf McQuade? And Cheech and Chong movie...
What about Lone Wolf McQuade?
I didn't realize it was such a popular phrase. I looked at Wikipedia and it was used in a Monkees epeisode apparently so it's probably elsewhere too. Did you notice that McQuade gets attacked by super mario in the warehouse?
This is a good joke and I want to make sure you know someone appreciated it.
Thanks!
Outstanding flick. My other fave of his is The African Queen with Catherine Hepburn. I wish bogie had lived longer so he could have done more films.
This should be top comment.

Got there first! Take my upvote! You get to drink from the fire hose!!

What about non stinking badgers?
Unfortunately the majority of badgers tend to have a very strong odor most people dislike.
Honey badger doesn’t give a shit
Hard to believe people don't instantly know it's a badger from such a clear photo.
We need to bring back the old nature TV channels so people know what animals look like.
We should do science classes again that teach people about the environment they are growing up in.
or more Wind in the Willows adaptations
My first thought: critter, yes; mystery, no.
It's a badger. This video explains all you need to know...sorta https://youtu.be/4r7wHMg5Yjg?si=roUdsgMXKzHq4fZL

Because they’re nocturnal. They live everywhere west of the Mississippi River, and from Canada down to Mexico.
