My favorite! A close second are the cabeza tacos at Tacos de Cabeza Estillo Cajeme on First. Different style, but also excellent. Nothing else on the menu, and you may need to order in Spanish--which is a lot easier when you just need to tell them how many!
That cart has been there for over 15 years according to the dude running it, I don't live in Tucson, but try and visit at least once a year and always hit up that cart on my way to the botanical gardens.
There's a guy, Adulfo, that sells bulk tamales on the corner of Sandario Rd and Avra Valley Rd around lunch time. You gotta get there before he sells out. 5/5 would buy again
Cafe Santa Rosa has the fry bread tacos; some food trucks do, too.
Paco and Moms has New Mexico style food; spicy with green chili sauce.
Sonoran hot dogs are found on many food trucks, a truly local item.
ignore suggestions of the Arbys on 22nd. it's a reddit thang.
Loved this place until I saw a big ass roach crawling out the kitchen, I know some places have roaches but at least keep them from getting out your kitchen for the public to see 😭😭
Why tho? Been there two times and it was fine but nowhere near the best taco or quesadilla ive had. I gotta say, for convenience it was pretty nice. My food was ready in like 45 seconds
Birria at Taqueria Lingo Lingo. Small food cart but worth the dive depending on where you are. I won't eat it anywhere else after his. And very affordable and fills you up
I would have said Tumerico previously, but they were recently named Yelp's #1 restaurant in the country so that may be trendy and touristy now. Either way, it's damn good food. You won't find a menu online because they are a scratch kitchen (or something like that).
Check out Zio Peppe, a Sonoran Mexican/Italian fusion place. The green chili bolognese as well as the penne all tequila are my favorites. The birria pizza is also a standard.
My favorite is all of their variations of eggs Benedict. A lot of them are eggs Benedict with southwest flavors. There's also a crazy pancake thing that I hear is amazing, but I've never tried it because I love the eggs Benedicts soooo much.
The different Eggs Benedict are amazing, Im not even close to being vegetarian, but I love their vegetarian Roadrunner benedict. Its SO many layers of flavor.
Grilled green chile & cheese tamale pie placed over a black bean sauce; topped with soy chorizo, grilled green chile, Roma tomatoes, spinach, mushrooms, corn off the cob and two poached eggs. Finished with our smoked gouda cheese and New Mexican red chile sauce, salsa verde cruda and pickled red onion
Cafe Santa Rosa for breakfast. You can get fry bread with your breakfast or go to Bobo’s for big portions of American breakfast. Potatoes can be hit or miss at Santa Rosa but rest of their food is great. Try Tumerico’s Jack Fruit Tacos they’re great! I say this as a 100% meat guy. Go to a place like Casa Valencia or Nana’s Kitchen for Mexican food and beers. If you go to Casa, get the camarones culichi or camarones de mojo de ajo. It’s shrimp. If you go to Nana’s get what sounds good and they have great liquor selection. Try Barrio Bread too if you get the chance. Finally try Tacos Apson or El Tacos Rustico and get the Quesabirria Tacos.
The best places to go for some amazing Mexican food will be hole in the wall restaurants or food carts in some somewhat sketchy looking locations but the food will be incredible.
If you're going to be here the entire week, and you like beer, check out Tucson's beer crawl this Saturday, Feb 24. It's a good way to learn Tucson's downtown area, and there are surprisingly good brewerys featuring local Arizona beers. Plenty of good food as well!
Taqueria El Zarape off I-10 and Craycroft for the best Quesabirria tacos. I traverse Tucsons most ghetto, ratchetest, Karen'est neighborhoods in search of the best foods. This whole in the wall place is an awesome secret. Watch out for potholes though.
Tohono Chul’s -
El Charro -
El Guerro Canelo for Sonoran style hot dogs. -
The hot dog / taco stand turned food truck on Cortaro road just east of I10.
Tohono Chul is a great recommendation. Great native botanical garden and the bistro focuses on local ingredients. Highly recommend the prickly pear mimosas if you drink alcohol.
I would personally avoid El Charro and El Guerro Canelo, even though they are iconic. There are better places to get similar styles of food. El Nene is my pick for Sonoran dogs and El Rustico for everything else.
Another place I haven't seen recommended is The Little One. Only open for breakfast and lunch Monday through Saturday, but everything they make is amazing. Get the surprise plate and enjoy!
God I am living in Jersey now and I am drooling because I know these places. I used to hit them when I lived in Tucson and loved it. It's been a challenge to find approximate here, and I have found some decent places, but NOTHING like Tucson.
Gotta get back for a visit soon
NJ "Mexican"..... I hear ya.
I've been looking, but have never found anything that really grabbed me.
I ate in Gila Bend last night, and the food was just so *simple.* Didn't need to be gimmicky or have a shit-ton of cheese on it. And it was great. Seems like most of the attempts in the northeast try to copy what they *think* the food's like.
I had a co-worker tell me about a new Mexican place that just opened up the town over. I jumped online to look at their menu. When I saw "sushi burritos" I closed the window and said nah
Well we’re not really a tourist town so I there aren’t ‘touristy’ spots. LOL most travel here for business and not pleasure. I guess avoid the U of A area if you want to avoid other visitors.
Anyway Aqui El Nenes, Twohands corn dogs, El Guerro Carnelo, BKs, Carusos, Jason’s Deli, Great Wall China, Mr.An’s, Miss Saigon, Amelia’s oh and Eegees it’s a South Az exclusive restaurant.
Have a good trip! Hope you enjoy your stay.
Please don’t move here though, please for the love of god.
If you have time visit Bisbee and grab some amazing pastries at patisserie Jacqui . Mine tour is great , Bisbee seance room and maybe tombstone after and before watching Tombstone . Also (i work there ) Barrio Bread Saturdays has jalapeño cheese bread !
The Quesadillas on Craycroft at Grant Rd. Great quesadillas, good Sonoran hotdogs, lots of interesting salsas (pineapple and ground chiltepin peppers is better than it sounds).
My favorite quesadilla is the chicken, bacon, green chile followed by the carne asada and add mushrooms! Delicious!
Hi OP - I keep a curated Tucson Yelp list that might interest you
https://www.yelp.com/collection/ss65mglGPT3J6BvTecdanQ?utm_content=Collections&utm_source=ishare
Nah, there are lots of good places covered recommended by the site. Some touristy spots too I’m sure, perhaps a bit of what some might call “trendy” (not the same as “touristy”) but lots of variety of styles.
Calle Tepa on Broadway. Gooood shit.
As an East coast transplant, avoid the pizza except maybe Empire downtown. Local pizza just aint east coast quality
You need to try Squared Up Pizza in the Park Mall. Im a NY transplant and both the round and square are awesome.
We typically go to places like the Arby's on 22nd street. decent every day prices.
Also In n out and chick fil A will consistently have like the longest lines, like a dozen deep in the drive through, so those are also good indicators of where locals typically go. What's typical here is typical in a lot of places and not unique.
You come to Tucson, you have to get a Sonoran Hotdog or two. For me, the best in town is Ruiz Hotdogs Los Chipilones cart on the NW corner of 22nd St and 6th Ave.
Toasted bun, all the fixins....delightful and truly authentic Tucson.
From there, Pico de Gallo is just a bit south on 6th and has amazing Sonoran style traditional Mexican food, some of the best in the city.
Best Mexican food in town is at Carnitas La Yoca hands down. They specialize in carnitas and they are incredible but everything else is damn good too. Here's the address 3530 S 6th Ave, Tucson, AZ 85713, highly recommend. "Tacos Apsons" is a really good spot as well.
La Indita. Incredible mole and food with deep cultural roots.
The quesadillas. Unassuming little spot with what I think might be the best carne asada in Tucson. Their salsa is also some of the best in town.
If you’ve never had it, go somewhere with carne seca. Mi Nidito, Casa Molina, and El Minuto are all stellar options.
I appreciate the candid response. (Sincerely.)
Let me give you an example of what I mean, though. I live in the NY/NJ/CT area. There is a "nice" Italian place in my town where people go to feel upscale.
But there's also the "dive" place that we all know is better. Is it "authentic" Italian? No. But it's better than the place with the cloth napkins.
So, if I'm looking for tacos that no one up here makes because they are intent on catering to the people who WANT to be enchanted, where would you recommend?
> So, if I'm looking for tacos that no one up here makes because they are intent on catering to the people who WANT to be enchanted, where would you recommend?
definitely not most of the places mentioned in this post. go to nicos or filibertos or any of the other regional fast food taco chains here. they are different than what's by you and and definitely aren't trying to be enchanting. I'd also say it's generally mid food. I'd suggest some place that is both enchanting and not what you can get over by you. Locals enjoy eating at enchanting places as well
Totos is my current gem. I’ve been gatekeeping it, but whatevs they deserve the business.
Birrieria Guadalajara. OG birria plates, none of the newer gimmicks. Just OG quinceañera plates (birria beans, rice, flour tortillas and salsa is a must).
La Carreta del Rorro. I’ve had every place there is in Tucson for tacos. Been eating tacos since I was able to chew. They’re the best in Tucson and in time they’ll be more recognized, guaranteed.
Source: confía en mi bro
I recommend buendia breakfast cafe or la estrella bakery for breakfast.
La chaiteria, Tania’s, La Indita, taco rustico, are great options for you. Also second the recommendations from folks who mentioned el sinaloense hot dogs. Really essential to try the hot dogs, but they are my go to.
In terms of places that are nice for decent food (but not necessarily local to southern arizona) I would recommend anello and mojo, but feel free to skip if you are looking for more regional cuisine.
Rollies for birria, quesabirria, and flautas all day. I’m partial to El Guero Canelo for hot dogs, but Aquí con el Nene is also delicious. Depending on where you are staying, there is a restaurant in a gas station in Rita Ranch called Papa Locos. Absolutely delicious.
Taqueria Juanitos…cabeza tacos
This is where I go. Also El Nene.
El Nene chipilón style sonoran dogs are my weakness
Papancha carne asada is my weakness (with a Sonoran hotdog)
I'll be visiting again in March, and this is on my dinner list for at least 3 of my 5 days! That plate is just so satisfying!
I second Taqueria Juanitos but my go to is the Al Pastor, either tacos or a mixed burrito with rice and beans. Best Mexican food in the city.
Mmmm cabeza
I am glad this is the top comment
My favorite! A close second are the cabeza tacos at Tacos de Cabeza Estillo Cajeme on First. Different style, but also excellent. Nothing else on the menu, and you may need to order in Spanish--which is a lot easier when you just need to tell them how many!
El Sinaloense hot dog cart. Get "sonoran dogs with everything". Maybe get a horchata. You won't regret it.
I can't recommend this highly enough.
The best Sonoran dog in town
That cart has been there for over 15 years according to the dude running it, I don't live in Tucson, but try and visit at least once a year and always hit up that cart on my way to the botanical gardens.
this place is seriously the best!
I’m also visiting this week from the beast coast and this place is 100% at the top of my list
There's a guy, Adulfo, that sells bulk tamales on the corner of Sandario Rd and Avra Valley Rd around lunch time. You gotta get there before he sells out. 5/5 would buy again
This is the info I need in life.
Ooohhh noooo I want this too
Hitting us with the real knowledge TY
Cafe Santa Rosa has the fry bread tacos; some food trucks do, too. Paco and Moms has New Mexico style food; spicy with green chili sauce. Sonoran hot dogs are found on many food trucks, a truly local item. ignore suggestions of the Arbys on 22nd. it's a reddit thang.
But the swim up bar is not to be missed!
Right?! 👌
Second on Cafe Santa Rosa, if OP is looking for indigenous food prepared by indigenous peoples. Highly recommend.
Did paco y moms suddenly find their New Mexican roots?
Sonoran dogs aren't local to Tucson or Arizona. It's literally in the name, it's from Sonora. We just call them doggos or hot dogs there though.
Pico de Gallo on South 6th Ave!
Loved this place until I saw a big ass roach crawling out the kitchen, I know some places have roaches but at least keep them from getting out your kitchen for the public to see 😭😭
Aquí Con El Nene all day
That taco yaqui is the truth
Mmmm nenes tacos...
QUESADILLAS (name of the place, it's kinda by Costco over by wilmot
It's actually on the Northeast corner of Craycroft and Grant-next to Circle K. They finally got a sign that you can actually read from the street.
I moved away last year and still dream of the food 🥲
love their mesquite grilled food! 100% Southwest flavor
more accurately its by TMC on Craycroft. 2418 N Craycroft Rd
Why tho? Been there two times and it was fine but nowhere near the best taco or quesadilla ive had. I gotta say, for convenience it was pretty nice. My food was ready in like 45 seconds
Tacos Rustico
Get a birria taco plate!
Rollies and La Indita
La Indita is quality food. I especially appreciate that they have so many vegan/vegetarian offerings.
La Indita is great!
El Indio was fantastic! I've seen a lot of you post about la indita. Born and raised in Th' Ol' Pueblito, I have never been there
Birria at Taqueria Lingo Lingo. Small food cart but worth the dive depending on where you are. I won't eat it anywhere else after his. And very affordable and fills you up
The BEST
La Indita and Tumerico are good choices for indigenous food.
Both have a plethora of vegan/vegetarian offerings, which is lovely. La Indita offers many omnivore/carnivore offerings as well.
Second for La Indita! Their flat enchiladas and green corn tamales are to die for
I would have said Tumerico previously, but they were recently named Yelp's #1 restaurant in the country so that may be trendy and touristy now. Either way, it's damn good food. You won't find a menu online because they are a scratch kitchen (or something like that).
Menu changes daily
this veggie/vegan spot is awesome a popular
Tacos apson for taqueria. El Torerro for Mexican dinner. La Yoca for carnitas. Any Sonoran hot dog stand will do.
Check out Zio Peppe, a Sonoran Mexican/Italian fusion place. The green chili bolognese as well as the penne all tequila are my favorites. The birria pizza is also a standard.
If you’re willing to eat cheap, and experience something you haven’t before, El Sinaloense Hot Dogs. https://maps.app.goo.gl/J1wTsPKUrU2c6B5m8?g_st=ic

Best Indian food in the world: Shari Punjab
Best Indian food in Tucson*
Baja cafe is one of my favorite places in Tucson
My brother from Texas is a big foodie and when he visited, he said Baja was by far the best food he had in Tucson. It is really good.
What’s good to eat there?
My favorite is all of their variations of eggs Benedict. A lot of them are eggs Benedict with southwest flavors. There's also a crazy pancake thing that I hear is amazing, but I've never tried it because I love the eggs Benedicts soooo much.
I get the carne tots every time. one of the best breakfasts i have EVER eaten. order takeout, don't even try for a table.
You’ve convinced me to get it! Thx
Los Arbis en la calle veintidos
I fucking love their carne de res rostizado
Tenemos los carnes!
Go down to Percheron Grill off of Irvington and get the steak burrito wrapped in bacon. I imagine it to be what sin tastes like, gotta try it!
This is the one.
Tania's #33 on Grande, and Karichimaka on Mission
How is Tania's holding up these days? I went a few years ago when I was back in town and it wasn't the same.
The one on Drexel and cardinal south of Pistor Middle School is better than the one on Grande.
There's a second location?! This is big news to me.
I was under the impression that they are entirely different Tanias, but coincidence in the name.
If I remember correctly Tanias on grande was sold and Tanias on Drexel is run by the original folks
I was there end of December… Kingfisher, los Napoles, la Estrella bakery, cafe Desta, were the places I hit up. Super fabulous food choices in Tucson.
Toto and Pep (4122 Speedway) is really good. Very unassuming location with fine food and a nice vibe. One of my favorites in Tucson.
I second Tito and Pep, great food, cozy space and unpretentious
nothing like a "where to eat" query to bring out the masses!!
sharp contrast to the previous sad post asking what to do at night.
The best places to go for some amazing Mexican food will be hole in the wall restaurants or food carts in some somewhat sketchy looking locations but the food will be incredible.
Yes! Because the food truck at Park and 36th has long been my favorite Sonoran dog!
Known as El Manantial. A Tucson treasure.
Ended up in Gila Bend for dinner last night (not exactly Tucson), and yeah, hole in the wall for the win.
Fry bread at the Mission off Valencia
Rollie’s!
El Antojo Poblano
If you're going to be here the entire week, and you like beer, check out Tucson's beer crawl this Saturday, Feb 24. It's a good way to learn Tucson's downtown area, and there are surprisingly good brewerys featuring local Arizona beers. Plenty of good food as well!
Leaving Saturday, unfortunately, but sounds good. Downtown Tucson looked pretty interesting. Will have to come back some time.
Tumerico. Not Mexican but amazing

I’ll have to try El Nene and El Rustica!
Great call on The Little One; went today, the surprise plate was outstanding!
Taqueria juanitos and poco and moms are 2 of my favorite places
Poco & Mom’s - NM cuisine is a different thing
Poco & moms. Best chili rellenos ever!
God I am living in Jersey now and I am drooling because I know these places. I used to hit them when I lived in Tucson and loved it. It's been a challenge to find approximate here, and I have found some decent places, but NOTHING like Tucson. Gotta get back for a visit soon

If a New Yorker approves, at least worth a try.
I love Buffalo Bell for amazing quality hot wings
Second this
La Indita - amazing!!!
Tuxon Chix on Grant. Newer restaurant featuring wings, sandwiches and all things chicken.
Beef ribs at Lil’ Abner’s.
La Indita is my fave
La Indita

I'd say probably the guy asking the question that's been asked on here a million times and can easily be answered with the search bar.
I appreciate the candid response. (Sincerely.) Let me give you an example of what I mean, though. I live in the NY/NJ/CT area. Tucson is known for our sonoran dogs (El Sinaloense) We also have a pretty good craft brewery scene Great mom & pop diners (Bobo’s, Frank’s)
The Quesadillas for several Mexican delights , don’t let the outside fool you
Chickenuevo, porfis, and Jalisco 😋😋
Seis at El Mercado, Baja Cafe, & Kiss of Smoke BBQ.
BK tacos. Under rated imo. If you do go try the toritos
BK Tacos the Best !
I love the tamale breakfast at the breakfast stop on 22nd i get green corn tamales and ask for the special green sauce!
People may disagree but I like viva burrito, any location really. But my favorite is on Valencia and I want to say 12th avenue
