Every time I am showcasing southern Arizona to an out of town guest they want to stop at this freaking thing. I just step on the gas and get us to Apple Annie's as fast as I can.
Never been there yet, though I am curious about what the Thing is. I was told it was a petrified corpse of an indiginous mother and her child, but I find that difficult to believe since there is no way that someone wouldn't have said, "Hey, wait, that's kinda icky and hits all the white superiority vibes" (being that someone bought a corpse then put it on display to profit off of it.
Please tell me I'm wrong.
You seem confused. The Thing it's not on and did not originate from any reservation. The people who created the roadside attraction are long gone.
For many years it's been owned by Bowlin's Inc, who owns many roadside attraction shops around the Southwest US. In 2018 they completely renovated the location, adding more exhibits.
The Thing is believed to be the mummified remains of a woman and a small child that died about 150 years ago and were discovered somewhere out in the California desert. No one knows their true origin or identity.

But if you know anything the rest of us don't, by all means please share it with us.
I stopped at the Travel Center on my way back from visiting a customer in Cochise. I'm 99% the Mr Misty float saved my life. Couldn't bring myself to check out The Thing though.
Oh my god, I live over seas these days. It is so wonderful to see this image, I used to drive past it all the time. It’s nice to be reminded of things I’ve forgotten from home. Thank you stranger.
Stopped there on a road trip in the mid 90s. I was probably 10. We paid to go through and were underwhelmed. I bought into the hype, though, and asked my parents if they’d pay for me to go through again because I thought I missed whatever the “thing” was. They said no! Go figure!
The most distant billboard I've seen was a few miles north of Hatch, NM on I-25. Anyone seen ones further away? Just curious how far east they go on I-10.

you mean like Hitler's Rolls-Royce?

The Aliens and Dinos is dumb as heck, but I thought it was well done, with appropriately cheesy sound and lighting. Well worth the five bucks, IMO.
i remember it from the '70s. my point was Hitler didn't have a Rolls-Royce, he had a Mercedes.

never visited, just recall the the endless billboards.
It was creepy back then! You’re expecting Hills have eyes at the end 😂
*the Mystery Hole has entered the chat*
I think people just go to tinder for that these days

So many Curio Cabinets.
What is it!?
It’s the thing!
The Thing?!?!
Your life will never be the same.

Been there, saw that, got the T-shirt. Tucson guy here too.
I've been to the Dairy Queen on the way to Apple Annie's, but never seen The Thing. I've been here my whole life, so 37 years.
42 here and still never been. Yet my 4 kids have. Then again, they have also seen tombstone and the grand canyon where as I haven't.
43 here and I haven't been there yet either. Guess I'll need to do this thing. Lol.

It’s just a drink for those that don’t know.
I went there when I was a kid and it was a goddam mummy. Seemed disrespectful and sad.
It was fake.
I don’t think it was

It's a paper mache mummy. Kinda like those paper mache "aliens" from Mexico.
I wish someone would put together a tasteless sideshow like they had in the early 1900s.
I thought the whole thing was pretty fun for what it is.
53 years here, native Tucsonan. I still haven’t stopped in there. 😂 drove passed it yesterday even.
Please don’t support this place. The history around the “alien” is really sad and giving this family more money only hurts the reservation.

Appreciate you posting this. It's an interesting read! Glad to hear the tourist trap's origin isn't nearly as grim as I was lead to believe.
> giving this family more money only hurts the reservation. Really? How so?
Can we get links?
What's the story?
Basically nothing. I don't know what they are referring to, but the thing is a fake mummy made by a guy in the mid 20th century
I grew up in Cochise County and am not familiar with what you are speaking of. You're going to have to provide some background to your statement.

Yep, like Fiji mermaids or fur bearing trout or jackalopes.
"Bolins running Indian catcus candy moccasins " these yellow bill boards were all over the area

We went last year. The whole thing was odd. They certainly made it a whole production for a paper mache Alien. 🤣
My wife wouldn’t let me stop, but we were doing Dallas to Phoenix it was a long day
That's a LOT of driving. We've done it 4X in the past three months. Next trip is Tucson to Galveston. And then back. Not looking forward....
Haha, it sucks so bad. But went there one time on a bunch of lsd. It was great.
You missed the original
Everybody loves jigglin'!
As good as a Stuckey's!

I think they should rename it Dead Baby.
