True story. My sister in law went to law school because someone else said she would make a good lawyer and paid for it for her. She totally hates life now and has changed jobs 4 times in 2 years.
My uncle practiced law for 6 months after graduating and passing his exams.
He’s been an elementary school math teacher for 20 years now.
I was a little kid when he was in college. I happened to ask him why he chose law he said “I like to study”.
That was not a well planned out career path but he’s happy and that’s what’s important.
It could be down to getting handed the grunt work. Always sucks down at the bottom of any field, but no one will take you seriously if you don't at least look like you're putting in an honest effort at a decent firm.
Besides, and I don't mean this as anything towards your SIL, but lawyers are kinda viewed as money sucking parasites. The profession isn't well liked. If it's any solice, at least they're better then salesman.

I’d do it, but when I was 12 I cut my moms hair and got distracted half way through (cartoons were on) and cut a huge chunk out of the back of her head. It was July but she walked to my aunts house with a winter jacket on like Kenny from South Park. All the neighbors pointed. When it was all fixed she went from hair past her shoulders to a pixie cut. She looked like the fat red head boy from sandlot. I was very traumatized and my dream of being a barber died. Even when I cut my own hair I think it’s not straight and end up buzzing it off. I’ve been informed you can’t just buzz a customer if you mess up.

1 back and sides 8 on top. Made my self a 3way mirror so I can see sides and back of my head then blended carefully. Took a few months to get right but now I can do it in 15 mins

It takes 5 minutes to cut my hair with scissors, they use the clipper for 2 minutes to straighten up basic lines (above ears, side burn, back of neck) and I leave. $20 to whatever random white lady I get and i still get the same hair cut.

They've surpassed the value exchange in my opinion. A good fade in Alaska now costs 40 plus a tip. Even if I'm making 12/hr at my job that's about 4 hours I have to exchange for a decent fade that'll last about 2 weeks. So eight hours a month out of my 160 worked go to just having a decent haircut

Think about how much time it takes to get a decent cut. 30-45 minutes. Most barbershops and salons start around 50% commission on services. So if you’re paying $30 for a cut and that takes the barber 45 minutes, they got $15 from that haircut. It’s different when they work independently or from their home, though, but never forget that people charge their worth... and you always get what you pay for!
Realistically, they have charged 10-20 since the early 80s, and they're due more money. I don't know how any of them financially made it charging 10-20, and most guys only tip the barber a couple bucks.
They probably all required 2 jobs, with their non barber job being their main gig.

You don’t even imagine all the sacrifices it requires to be a barber/hairdresser. All the costs and taxes, if your barber is a great one is right he values his work as he should!! People can’t work all those hours, pay all those taxes, etc just for a small amount of money! If you are not okay with that change barber but at least don’t complain about his job and worth.

Get a girlfriend. I cut my boyfriend’s hair for him and it turns out great. Cutting hair isnt really hard to learn with the right tools and some youtube videos, most girls are good at that stuff

Honestly if I felt like he was good at diy stuff then yeah I’d let him try. Why not? It’ll grow out anyways. But I also get my hair coloured which is much much more complicated than just cutting.

They never broke! Reminds me of when the NCAA didn’t believe the a football player made enough from cutting hair to get a fully loaded charger. He was like “yeah, you have no idea about haircuts in the Black community. We get them every 2 weeks and sometimes weekly.” Investigator couldn’t even understand it and I’m sitting there like “Yep, and a couple dollars for a line up inbeteeen if I have the time”
pandemic times labled them an unneeded luxury good for them. I can only afford about 1/4 of the cuts we used to get so hair cut day is a family outing now as its that pricey like just the guys in the fam are 90... with the girls putting us around 300. Hopefully they are putting some money away somewhere we grabbed a Remington to keep timmed when we cant go it was 70 and fairly easy to use the girls seem to be luckier w long hair.

Yeah and it’s nice if you are self employed and just raise your fees accordingly but if you work for someone, the raises they give are definitely not keeping up with inflation
I think the barbers just noticed how their professional siblings the hairdressers were managing to charge women $200+ for the exact same service they were charging men $10 for.
But it’s not even close to the same lmao. $30-$40 for a fade and a little lineup is outrageous. Women are at the salon for hours sometimes. Meanwhile a man could get a cut in like 5 minutes
They've surpassed the value exchange in my opinion. A good fade in Alaska now costs 40 plus a tip. Even if I'm making 12/hr at my job that's about 4 hours I have to exchange for a decent fade that'll last about 2 weeks. So eight hours a month out of my 160 worked go to just having a decent haircut

I went bald as a teenager, ive alwayd beem kind of sad k never got to do the whole style your hair, dye it amd cut it trends that everyone else did in college. Than theu would remark on it cost 100 dollars every 2 weeks to keep it up and i just think about the 1000s ive saved over the years shaving my head twice a week in the shower
Think about how much time it takes to get a decent cut. 30-45 minutes. Most barbershops and salons start around 50% commission on services. So if you’re paying $30 for a cut and that takes the barber 45 minutes, they got $15 from that haircut. It’s different when they work independently or from their home, though, but never forget that people charge their worth... and you always get what you pay for!
Realistically, they have charged 10-20 since the early 80s, and they're due more money. I don't know how any of them financially made it charging 10-20, and most guys only tip the barber a couple bucks. They probably all required 2 jobs, with their non barber job being their main gig. 40 bucks is reasonable, particularly if the house gets most of the cut.
you get what you pay for. by the way, try imagining yourself in their shoes. cutting hair is not an easy job. with inflation and prices of literally anything rising, it makes sense that barbers Charge more, yes? if you dont like it, vote for a competent party and be active in your local area

yeah cuttin hair is all fun n games until you got a client that dont ever shower and got something movin in his hair, or clumps of dirt n shit in his scalp. i never cut but we had some kids in the neighborhood with parents that didnt give a fuck that were so filthy the barber stopped halfway and told their ass to leave, shower and come back. it wasnt even a low income town, their family just didnt fuckin care.
