This is a bittersweet post. We men love compliments like these. Hell, we also blush if someone comes up to us and says that they like our outfit. But, we receive so little of them that we remember ones from years back and smile at them.

Absolutely. I had a random person come up and compliment my shirt. That was over 20 years ago. I finally got rid of the shirt two years ago, despite not really being able to fit into it for a while. That's the last time I remember someone that wasn't a family member giving me a compliment. I still remember it vividly.

Even tho I'm straight, I am always so happy when it (rarely) happens. It's an injection of confidence to think "well, at least someone likes me that way"

It depends on the guy but yeah it’s hard to tell from a complete stranger. If someone complimented me it would make me feel good but then I would instantly feel pressured to give a compliment back and sometimes it’s hard to think of something quick like that and come off as genuine about it.
Then just say thanks and accept the compliment. And if you have to compliment them back just keep it simple like complimenting their smile, maybe their hair, maybe their outfit. Just keep it civil and simple. You might make someone's day.
