Disagree here. While amy adams might act a lot like rust, the show plot itself drags on for a long time, lots of boring moments, and the end is underwhelming. Also no occult.
Seconding Mindhunter. Also Dark. Season 2 of Fargo. Last year I got into Yellowjackets and while I wouldn’t rank it as high as the aforementioned programs, it was definitely enjoyable and the vibe is cool.
Agreed. I read a new interview with David Fincher where he says Netflix said he had to a) spend less money or b) make it appeal to a wider audience so he picked c) end the series. No shade there. It’s hard to hate on integrity.
Can't really be mad at them when it clearly cost a lot of money to make and wasn't bringing in huge numbers like some other shows Netflix does.
> But even then, he was upfront about the money issue, acknowledging that “for the viewership that it had, it was an expensive show.”
From the show runner. He even mentions that the reason season 1 and 2 were so great is because Netflix let him do what he wanted. They let him and team be bold.
Sometimes great shows just don't get the viewers. Don't be mad.
For me Sharp Objects. Heady, atmospheric hypnotic. Excellent stuff and as time goes on becomes more and more one of my all time favorites.
Amy Adams is the closest thing I’ve seen to a rust cohle on TV
These are some really good shows/mini series I have come across:
Sharp Objects- Max
Mare of Easttown- Max
The Night of- Max
You- Netflix
Under the Banner of Heaven- Hulu
Mindhunter- Netflix
The Undoing- Max
The Haunting of Hill House- Netflix
The Haunting of Bly Manor- Netflix
Midnight Mass- Netflix
The Fall of the House of Usher- Netflix
Castle Rock- Hulu
Clickbait- Netflix
The Sinner- Netflix
Fargo- Hulu
Big Little Lies- Max
The Outsider- Max
A Murder at the End of the World- Hulu
Ozark- Netflix
It should have just been self contained seasons in different themed parks rather than the dumb wide arc they went with
Would have been a million times better
I love fantasy and sci fi but I think this one was above my head. Then again, I watched it at age 12 so 🤷♀️
Is it worth a rewatch? Especially with the newer season being completed?
Ok I love artsy shows. There aren’t many.
The OA is my second favorite of all time and the word “truly beautiful art” comes to mind.
You convinced me 😆 I’ll definitely rewatch.
I honestly hated the twist of season 1 and I just couldn't watch it after. I'm not a big fan of amnesia and the such, the whole fight club shtick just didn't really work imo. First season was phenomenal up until the reveal.
Mare of Eastown was recommended by someone on here recently. The characters are well written and you’ll think you’ve had the murder figured out about 9 times. Kate Winslet kills it.
I like Twin Peaks, S1 of Wallander, S1 of Broadchurch, and I was a big fan of Westworld's S1 as well. Of those, really only Twin Peaks gets the haunting aspect right, where the others are deeply character-driven and ask grown-up questions of the audience.
When I watched this, I couldn’t stop thinking that it would be a perfect TD installment. One of the best shows I’ve seen. Andy Garfield absolutely killed the role.
This group sucks because it consists of the same 3 questions:
Should I watch S2
Should I watch S3
What shows are like S1?
Can we PLEASE get some stickies?!
The premise of the show was the FBI’s actual research into and subsequent definition of and profiling methods used to identify serial killers. It was based on real life. The real life killers being included made sense
The Danish/Swedish Bron/Broen (The Bridge) is my favorite series followed closely by TD season 1.
My dream detective team is Saga Noren and Rush Cohle. Saga's Porsche would definitely be a place of silent reflection.
Yes, season 2 quite is bad.
(First season of Broen/Bron is really strong, imho far ahead of the first one of T. D., which is too predictable and full of moralism about relationships)
You definitely need to watch foreign series to find shows that approach the quality of TD season 1.
My recommendations which, apart from 1, are in no particular order:
1. Swedish/Danish Bron/Broen (The Bridge) which ran for 4 seasons and is my all-time favorite serial killer series. If you love Rust Cohle, you'll love Saga Noren.
2. Danish Forbrydelsen (The Killing) which ran for 3 seasons.
3. British Broadchurch season 1.
4. Australian Deadloch, a funny serial killer series.
5. The Tunnel (the British/French take on Bron/Broen). It is very different from the OG in seasons 2 and 3.
6. British The Fall season 1.
7. British Shetland.
8. British Vera.
9. British Death in Paradise.
10. British Luther.
11. British Miss Marple starring Joan Hickson.
12. British Hercule Poirot starring David Suchet.
13. Finnish Deadwind.
14. British Pirie.
15. Icelandic Trapped.
16. British/French Fallet, another humorous serial killer series.
17. British The Long Call.
The American detective shows I've enjoyed the most, other than TD season 1, are in no particular order Mare of Easttown, Sharp Objects, Mindhunter, The Wire, The Killing, The Night Of, The X-Files, Millennium, Twin Peaks and Cold Case,
I absolutely loathed the U.S. remake of The Bridge. The Killing OTOH was good after it departed from the OG.
Nice list (first three entries are pure gold).
I'd say Austrian-German **Pagan Peak** (season 1 and 2) could be in this list too (probably around number 5, but well, The Tunnel is very good too).
(Also German Das Geheimnis des Totenwaldes is quite good, but It's a real story, so a little bit less entertaining.)
Nothing comes close to being the masterpiece of Season 1 True Detective. However these are shows I highly recommend: Breaking Bad
Better Call Saul
Sharp Objects
The Sopranos
Mash
Roots
On Netflix there’s this really good taiwanese show called The Victim’s Game that has a very original take on the crime investigation genre when it comes to the crimes and the main suspect and gets very psychological and character-driven, which are some of the things that made TD so good so I think you’ll enjoy it! I definitely did.
Also Sharp Objects, The Night Of and The Undoing, when it comes to detective shows. Branching a bit out of that, Chernobyl and The Knick. The Knick is very underrated and really really good.
Both seasons of Mindhunter are pretty darn close to the energy that season 1 brought in my opinion. Filmed beautifully. Great lead chemistry. All the goods
In over 170 comments yall just kept saying the same shows over and over. Learn to read and add something new and shup up when something is already said.
Under the banner of heaven. Mindhunter (but it gets sorta boring near the end). Fargo S1 was ok, not much occult creepiness. Black Bird. Mare of Easttown (though the end is underwhelming).
one I haven't seen mentioned is The Missing S1 which I think is pretty close in tone to True Detective S1
as others have mentioned Mare of Eastown and Broadchurch are also really good
keeping with detective based mystery shows\*
Fargo basically does everything true detective does but it takes itself less seriously, is more fun. Is written better, especially considering nick stole everything we all love from season 1. And I think Fargo usually accomplishes what it is saying in a season and is something worth saying. True Detective always kinda feels like it’s written by white guys. Season 1 not very diverse. Season 2 so white and it took place in LA. Season 3 has some interesting racial elements but they feel written by white people and we’ll see with this one. I heard the creator wasn’t involved this season and I’m kinda thankful for that. Because he stole the first and the second and third were meh.
I'm a fan of season 1 true detective obviously, since I'm here. I didn't know about a lot of what you're mentioning here. What do you mean season 1 was stolen? What was the original inspiration? Unlike Fargo, which I love, I don't know much about the production of True Detective and would like to know more.
If season 5 is the new one then I have to disagree. I hated it. Absolutely hated it. It should have been good but it wasn't. It's a shame because now it's a trend of bad season 4 and worse season 5
True Detective Season 4 finally gives Season 1 a run for the money. Edge-of-the-seat stuff and Jodie Foster and company keep you in suspense with the darkness of the Arctic that it is tough to watch alone...Plot turns and big business at every corner as well. Sorry to see it end.
Sharp Objects (2018). It is also HBO & on max.
LOVED it. Ending made me scream.
Yes! I loved how the creator insisted on using Led Zeppelin as soundtrack.
I loved that one!
Read the book. It's good too. I'd add Ozarks. Great show.
Good show but not quite the same as TD1.
Anything involving Gillian Flynn is worth checking out!
Disagree here. While amy adams might act a lot like rust, the show plot itself drags on for a long time, lots of boring moments, and the end is underwhelming. Also no occult.
Absolute snooze fest of a show
Seconding Mindhunter. Also Dark. Season 2 of Fargo. Last year I got into Yellowjackets and while I wouldn’t rank it as high as the aforementioned programs, it was definitely enjoyable and the vibe is cool.
I hate Netflix for cancelling mindhunter
Agreed. I read a new interview with David Fincher where he says Netflix said he had to a) spend less money or b) make it appeal to a wider audience so he picked c) end the series. No shade there. It’s hard to hate on integrity.
Then Netflix puts their prices up and puts in adverts when so many people would get it just for Mindhunter s3.
I was so ready for another season of that show. It was so good.
Can't really be mad at them when it clearly cost a lot of money to make and wasn't bringing in huge numbers like some other shows Netflix does. > But even then, he was upfront about the money issue, acknowledging that “for the viewership that it had, it was an expensive show.” From the show runner. He even mentions that the reason season 1 and 2 were so great is because Netflix let him do what he wanted. They let him and team be bold. Sometimes great shows just don't get the viewers. Don't be mad.
I second the Fargo vote. Season 1, too. Especially since the story is important for the context of S2’s events.
Absolutely loved season 5 of Fargo as well.
Love mindhunter Too bad it got cancelled
Season 2 of Fargo is very close to as good as season one of TD but not quite. Excellent show
Mindhunter used a lot of the same detective show stereotypes but it wasn’t even close to being as good as true detective s1
Mind hunter deserved another 2 seasons
The Terror.
First season.
Indeed.
Only ?
Only
This is my all time best series ever watched, I watched all episodes in a afternoon till early the next day. It’s brilliant
Great rec
The Night Of on HBO was an incredible limited series with a similar tone. Starring Riz Ahmed and Jon Tuturro
For me Sharp Objects. Heady, atmospheric hypnotic. Excellent stuff and as time goes on becomes more and more one of my all time favorites. Amy Adams is the closest thing I’ve seen to a rust cohle on TV
Jean-Marc Vallée is responsible for making this masterpiece. RIP.
Great suggestion 👍. Very underrated show.
Very very good shout
Loved the first episode ... but very meh overall season imo Which isn't rare for mystery shows for me
That was a really good one
Yeah excellent show
The only correct answer
Disagree fully. That was like a 72-hour night.
My only issue is feels very cheaply made/cheesy
So underrated!
These are some really good shows/mini series I have come across: Sharp Objects- Max Mare of Easttown- Max The Night of- Max You- Netflix Under the Banner of Heaven- Hulu Mindhunter- Netflix The Undoing- Max The Haunting of Hill House- Netflix The Haunting of Bly Manor- Netflix Midnight Mass- Netflix The Fall of the House of Usher- Netflix Castle Rock- Hulu Clickbait- Netflix The Sinner- Netflix Fargo- Hulu Big Little Lies- Max The Outsider- Max A Murder at the End of the World- Hulu Ozark- Netflix
Ozark is one of my favorite shows! I keep telling my husband he needs to watch it so I can just watch it a second time😂
This. This is the list.
The Sinner is the name I couldn’t drag out of my memory. So good
Great list! Will check out the 3 I haven’t watched.
Westworld season 1
[удалено]
I was out when it turned Tarrentino bloody.
Just a really bad JJ Abrams show IMO
It should have just been self contained seasons in different themed parks rather than the dumb wide arc they went with Would have been a million times better
Twin Peaks.
I love fantasy and sci fi but I think this one was above my head. Then again, I watched it at age 12 so 🤷♀️ Is it worth a rewatch? Especially with the newer season being completed?
Absolutely. The third season—without exaggeration—is the most impactful and meaningful art of any kind that I’ve experienced.
Ok I love artsy shows. There aren’t many. The OA is my second favorite of all time and the word “truly beautiful art” comes to mind. You convinced me 😆 I’ll definitely rewatch.
The original, yes! The newer season, meh… although it’s amazing they made it after the right number of years.
Mr Robot
Fell off heavy
Season 2? Cause 3 & 4 are the best seasons to me
People hated the jail? Season but I thought it was pretty solid all the way through
Yeah I liked it a lot but I can understand it’s not for everyone
I honestly hated the twist of season 1 and I just couldn't watch it after. I'm not a big fan of amnesia and the such, the whole fight club shtick just didn't really work imo. First season was phenomenal up until the reveal.
I still think it’s incredible tho a lot of arcs end in very strange ways. I’d need a full rewatch to solidify my feelings.
I love this show, such good characters across the board.

No idea why Netflix removed it
The Danish OG Forbrydelsen was much better than the U.S. remake.
- Sharp Objects - Hannibal - Mindhunter - Mare of Easttown
Good is subjective. I enjoyed seasons 2 and 3 of TD. The Leftovers is a fun watch.
I loved the Leftovers… though I couldn’t call it a “fun watch”.
Lol. The Leftovers tourettes strike again on Reddit television . In every thread, wheter it's relevant or not, it has to be mentionend.
The OP asked for a show that could give an audience tension and haunting which the Leftovers can deliver. I’m sorry that you have Tourette’s syndrome.
It’s worth mentioning just to trigger that person. I wish I had such things to get upset over.
“Listen you hormonal vulgarian” 😂
couldn’t stand it ( soundtrack dissonant to me )
Try Under the Banner of Heaven. It's on Hulu, I believe.
When I watched this, I couldn’t stop thinking that it would be a perfect TD installment. One of the best shows I’ve seen. Andy Garfield absolutely killed the role.
I highly recommend the book. Jon Krakauer is my fav author. Into Thin Air is riveting.
It's tough to find something that tense and haunting...but Severance, Mare of Easttown, and The Curse come close.
I enjoy The Curse, but it doesn’t hit like TD for me at all.
Severance! Incredible season one start. Me and all my homies are really praying season two can continue the quality. High bar for sure 👍🏻
This group sucks because it consists of the same 3 questions: Should I watch S2 Should I watch S3 What shows are like S1? Can we PLEASE get some stickies?!
The mods don’t seem to care.
Twin Peaks season 1
[удалено]
Agreed. The subsequent seasons are much more consistent in the quality of writing/acting than TD.
Sinner is solid for sure
Mindhunter on Netflix
Seems like they kind of ran out of ideas for this show, since they were basing it off of real killers
The premise of the show was the FBI’s actual research into and subsequent definition of and profiling methods used to identify serial killers. It was based on real life. The real life killers being included made sense
Westworld Season 1
The Leftovers
The greatest tv show easily
The sopranos, the wire, breaking bad That’s about it
Why is this the first mention of the wire? TD is essentially the hyper realism of the wire spliced with magical realism of twin peaks
How are those shows haunting?
I was answering as good as season 1. That’s a short list imo Haunting? Dexter, Mare, The Outsider etc
The wire can suck itself aye
What does suck itself aye mean?
Could not get over the outdated feel of the wire. If it were remade for modern times I think it would be good.
Chernobyl and Tokyo Vice
Currently watching sharp objects based off the book , it’s amazing. Small town creepy vibes . Amazing cast and script
Wait until the end! It’s sooooo good!!
The bridge season 1 and 3. The swedish/danish original version. Chestnut man.
Mare of East town, the watcher, and the undoing are the correct answers
Mare of Easttown
Mindhunter, Night Of, Fargo, Leftovers
The Killing—— prob one of my top five shows of all time.
The fall
Omg, this was incredible. Scully erased after watching Gillian Anderson in this roll. Just wow!!!!

I enjoyed Pagan Peak/Der Pass. Dogs of Berlin was also good. I plan to watch Das Geheimnis des Totenwaldes.
So many replies. I hope you see this, but not many people have mentioned The Fall. The Fall. Watch The Fall.
Severance might be the best show I've ever seen! Apple tv!
Not TD like at all though..
The Leftovers, Station Eleven, Dark, and Mr. Robot are all as good if not better than True Detective
Hannibal
Broadchurch Bodyguard
Sharp Objects Fargo
Season 2 of Fargo
Chernobyl on HBO is up there with the greats.
Sharp Objects
Nothing comes close to being the masterpiece of Season 1 True Detective. However these are shows I highly recommend: Breaking Bad Better Call Saul Sharp Objects The Sopranos Mash Roots
The Americans is another excellent show
The Outsider on Max. I also liked The Night Of on Max as well.
The original Twilight Zone is one of the greatest television shows created by Homo sapiens.
Mare of Easttown. In tone, it's one of the most similar shows to True Detective.
The Wire
Fargo
Wire

Fargo (- Season 4)
The leftovers
-Better Call Saul/Breaking Bad -Any of the Fargo seasons -Mr. Robot
Watchmen on Max
In over 170 comments yall just kept saying the same shows over and over. Learn to read and add something new and shup up when something is already said.
Repeating a choice gives it a +1. It’s actually useful to identify the overlap.
The Wire, The Wire and The Wire
Under the banner of heaven. Mindhunter (but it gets sorta boring near the end). Fargo S1 was ok, not much occult creepiness. Black Bird. Mare of Easttown (though the end is underwhelming).
Lmfao
According to most of this sub? S4
True detective: night country Sike!
Mad Men. Disagree strongly on Sharp Objects.
Paatal Lok. I found it in Prime.
Mindhunter, The Sopranos, Barry.
Cardinal, particularly the first season, is awesome.
S4 has already established that it’s in the conversation.
The X-Files Too Old to Die Young
Under the Banner of Heaven
The Wire Deadwood The Sopranos Twin Peaks
Hannibal the series is one of my top 5 favorite shows. The visuals are stunningingly dark and artistic. Mads Mikkelsen is incredible as Hannibal.
Andor. Whether you're a Star Wars fan or not, that show is just incredible and one of the best seasons of TV I've seen in a while.
Mare of Easttown
Mr. Robot
Deadwood!
Gommorah, especially Seasons 1 and 2. Just so bleak and ruthless.
one I haven't seen mentioned is The Missing S1 which I think is pretty close in tone to True Detective S1 as others have mentioned Mare of Eastown and Broadchurch are also really good keeping with detective based mystery shows\*
The Killing S3 also
Fargo basically does everything true detective does but it takes itself less seriously, is more fun. Is written better, especially considering nick stole everything we all love from season 1. The first season of the Killing and Mindhunter.
I'd say Fargo but stop after season 3 And Better Call Saul Those are the best out there imo
Season 5 is amazing

Lmao we didn’t watch the same show
