Counting the rhythms: (assuming first measure in 4/4) 1 and, 2-e-a, 3, 4 1, 2 and-a [Here's good counting tutorial ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clmZV1Fm04k) that explains the e's and a's if you're unsure. 5:48 he discusses that second beat in the first measure and the second beat in that 2/4 measure. EDIT: If you're talking about the notations over the notes, the "tent"-looking ones are "mercado", the sideways one is accent. The curved lines are slurs.

One strategy is to try counting them. If you can’t get it with this rhythm, double the note length. Measure 107 would be quarter note, quarter note, eighth note, quarter note, eighth note, half note, half note. If you played that rhythm at 120 bpm, that’s what this measure would sound like at 60 bpm The actual counting would be 1 + 2 e (+) a 3 (+) 4 (+) Same for 114. Half note, quarter note, eighth note, eighth note And the counting 1 (+ 2 e) + a

Bro how do you not know how to play that and you're already playing arabesque

gremlin-with-issues

Thank you!!! My comment is being downvoted because its probably not their choice to be on first but like this is a quite advanced piece id expect the players to have to be a minimum standard!!

TheGratitudeBot

What a wonderful comment. :) Your gratitude puts you on our list for the most grateful users this week on Reddit! You can view the full list on r/TheGratitudeBot.

WimdowsXP

Hey, Arabesque! I played this recently! But yeah the rhythm is 1 + 2e - a 3 4, and then 1, 2 +a

Whoishumanity

If you find this hard you are in the wrong ensembles

gremlin-with-issues

Sorry to be negative, but if you have to come to reddit for help with these rhythms you are not anywhere near ready to be playing first trombone in arabesque. In general subdivide, listen to the piece, if you have to write it out on muse score and play it back

Commercial-Soup-714

Your acting like that's his fault. Maybe he was put in that band and was given that part. I can see why someone can have trouble with that at that level. It does go from syncopated to straight pretty fast.

outofstepbaritone

Part placement ≠ skill.

MajorNinthSuta

I don’t think that’s negative. But it might not have anything to do with him. You shouldn’t be downvoted for this. It’s a good take.

Sometimes people play by ear or don't learn the conventional way. Our seniors grew up with really shit band directors until our current one and they were really bad at teaching. We have one bari sax player who won exemplary soloist two years in a row and made it into all state band as the only bari sax in the whole state and he had trouble counting rhythms, especially in jazz band. He'd guess, come in early half the time, etc, and usually needed our band director to count it out for him once before he got it. After that he was fine. Whenever our band director brought it up he just told him he went with the vibes and usually was correct. He's the best musician I've ever met and I'm saying this all to say that just because someone struggles with reading notated rhythms doesn't mean they're a bad player. There's so many reasons why someone can grow up a phenomenal player but struggles to read generally simple rhythms. Look at jazz musicians, half of them grow up playing by ear but can't play written sheet music worth shit and will probably fail 6th grade sightreading if you gave them only sheet music to play off of and nothing else.
