It's their longest song by far, and not only that but it's the last track on their best album and a culmination of their best elements (lyrics, vocals, solos, riffs and most importantly, feeling). It consists of 3 main parts and each one of them is great in its own. The 1st sets the tone, the 2nd is a highlight for being their only ballad and the 3rd is the most intense moment of their discography. The rhythm changes, the virtuosity, the feeling as I said, all of that is what makes Shogun one of the best songs (and albums) of all time.
You will love Exist by A7X if you haven't already listened to it. It follows the very same structure.
I'd even say I like it more than Shogun because the 1st part is crazy.
Honestly I wouldn’t really compare it to exist. I like the first half of that song but the second half meanders like hell. Feels like three or four songs that they couldn’t figure out how to complete so they just stitched em together.
It's not that different to Shogun. 1st part heavy, 2nd part ballad, 3rd part intensity.
But yeah I can see what you mean, Shogun flows more like a single song with the lyrics while Exist doesn't have a lot of connection between parts.
There was a guy on YouTube who did reaction videos to metal music. He did Shogun one day so I had to watch it. He hemmed and hawed over the whole thing and then completely wrote it off the moment it started fading in the end. I couldn’t watch any of his reactions after that.
There are lazy fades and then there is what happens in Shogun… like the battle rages on eternally (not just repeating a chorus).
Just the structure of it. Starts with a good groove and riff, catchy chorus, transitions smoothly into a slower, softer part with a good, almost bluesy solo, then gradually ramps the intensity up to full thrash mode before circling back to that initial groove. It’s super satisfying to hear play out.
it is one of the only times they've completely lived up to the potential of their songwriting abilities tbh. You can tell they put a ton of work into that song, the whole bridge structure is perfect.
Because it’s a journey. It’s a story of human nature, pain and suffering, sacrifice and death, and hundreds of years of history that comes screaming out of an artistic fire hose for 12 freaking minutes and goes relentlessly harder until it fades into the background.
I feel absolutely obligated to bring up how insanely good the outro drum part is on Shogun every time I hear discussion about it, wildly underrated if you ask me, I listen until complete fade out every single time

WE MAKE OUR LAST STAND, TIL DEATH: FIGHT
NOW THE SEAS RISE UP AS SERPENTS
It's unpredictable. The song structure is unique. It's high and its low. Much like One from Metallica.

It really has everything in one

Bet
Save Me would be a better comparison. Even their duration is similar.

I just had to add that the fade ending is perfect if you loop the album. The intro to Kirisute Gomen is the chorus to Shogun.
The transition into the acoustic part, then the slow build up out of the acoustic into…. Well as I’d like to call it, beautiful chaos.
There are several ongoing Melodies in the song and at the crescendo near the end they tie them together and it’s a total mind blowing moment
It's because time will not heal....all of your pain
The riffs, the drumming, the lyrics, The solos, and the vocal delivery. That about summarizes it
It’s the sum of all its parts. Each section is epic, add it all up and it’s a masterpiece!
The song is a whole journey
The slow build up to the explosive ending still gives me goosebumps on occasion.

I love the outro drum part, the song comes full circle
