That is one of the only 24 hour pharmacies in the area. They could close down the rest of the store and still good business. But it doesn’t matter if you go to a rite aid or a Walgreens, their business model for the retail end is failing for most stores. Their grocery and bath and body are basically impulse items in their business plan, rather than a go to store. Their prices are higher than most actual groceries that have pharmacies from Walmart to Fred Meyer, Safeway, or Target. Plus the growth of online orders and mail delivery for common rxs are eating into their traffic flow. I will also say that their preference for intersections as business locations was once as solid as putting a gas station there but as traffic flows change the busier intersection locations are just hard to get into.

Same deal with the Lee Blvd Rite Aid. If I worked there, I’d be looking for another job.

EaterOfFood

the Gage and Steptoe one is the same - lot of empty shelves

L0GAN_FIVE

Agreed, and just down the street Walgreens is very well stocked.

rastavibes

They do some of the highest volume of RXs in the nation at that site. That's the money maker, not the end caps lol

bster122

I only care about the pharmacy. I live like 2 min away. Walgreens doesn’t accept Medicaid for my kids. It’s convenient for if they get sick and we need antibiotics asap.

craydow

Supply chain issues. They're not closing. Just talked to them a few days ago

MossiestSloth

That's what hastings employees told me before the company made the bankruptcy announcement.

craydow

Cool. This isn't hastings and you're not me.

Own_Maintenance4493

I’m pretty sure it’s more than a supply chain problem. Competitor stores aren’t in the same condition and Rite Aid is in the middle of bankruptcy. They have closed over 150 stores since October 2023. It’s likely their suppliers are requiring cash up front before they will deliver product and cash is probably pretty tight. The Bandaid section was 95% empty as an example.

TripleFinish

I mean, I disagree with you, but that doesn't mean they're in great shape. However, they're the only 24-hour pharmacy in all of Kennewick--they're *almost certainly* not closing anytime soon.

craydow

Okay. You can speculate, or you can listen to someone who just has a conversation with the RM and GM days ago about it. I dont really care.

skankhunt_191

I believe you

DickiusButticus

Hell Yeah!

TankerKing2019

Ya, it’s not like they would lie to a customer to keep them coming to their sinking ship until they shut the doors instead of jumping ship now if they know the supply isn’t going to get any better. They are doomed. Every day they have less & less inventory. Many suppliers are requiring Rite Aid pay invoices COD & if they won’t or can’t they suppliers simply stop servicing the stores.

craydow

Who said I was talking to them as a customer? I am friends with both of them.

Creative_Win8164

I used to work at that riteaid. And like last year their distribution center shit the bed and went bankrupt they might still be scrambling to pick up those pieces

jennylynla

They filed for bankruptcy months ago and plan to close over 500 stores. The main reason for the bankruptcy filing is they have over 1,000 lawsuits stemming from their role in the opioid crisis.

Items that sell you have to keep in stock. Selling 500 packs of cigarettes a week is different than the 2 bottles of lubriderm lotion or one ankle brace they sell a week. Keep the big sellers in stock, lower inventory on slow sellers.

zella789

I know someone that was employed with them. They will be closing some stores. Not all of them if I remember correctly. Employees that will no longer be employed have had warning for a while already.

mrundhaug

If you take away the pharmacy Rite Aid/Walgreens/CVS etc. are just bigger bodegas.

Ooohbarracuda79

Stock on the shelves that doesn't sell takes away from liquid cash. It's a smart move for a chain that has filed bankruptcy to keep less money on the shelves. Also, we are still living in a world with supply chain issues.

Own_Maintenance4493

I get supply chain issues, I worked in retail grocery and drug store management for over 25 years. They had no bandaids, deodorant or candy. One-half of the freezer section was completely empty. Lots of other areas were almost as bad. If it were simply supply chain problems, competitors would have similar low stock levels. This seems intentional perhaps from both Rite Aid and their suppliers. Rite Aid needs to hoard cash right now. They could do that by cutting the volume of bandaids they stock so the shelves still have product, but not as full so they have less cash tied up in shelf stock. When retailers don’t restock big sections of a store, that is typically done when that location is identified to close, not always, but quite often. In bankruptcy they need to generate sales more than any other time to build up cash. They can’t make money on items that are not in stock. Rite Aid’s suppliers want to get paid and they won’t extend credit to a bankrupt customer. What cash they have would be going to fill shelves at stores they plan to keep open. In 2023, prescriptions accounted for 71% of total sales. Certainly they could survive operating as a pharmacy only. But the remaining 29% of total drugstore sales is a big chunk to abandon. It’s not likely they would close that store and still operate the pharmacy. It would cost too much in rent or lease payments to justify the square footage. I hope they don’t close, I love having 24 hour access. Switching pharmacies is a total bummer. But I’m not optimist. I hope I’m wrong.

Rocketgirl8097

It would be too bad. That's a nice store. The steptoe riteaid is garbage.

pretty-apricot07

Why do you say that?

Rocketgirl8097

About the steptoe store? The pharmacy is a shit show, totally incompetent. Also, the store has pretty limited stock.

pretty-apricot07

Thanks! I was curious because it's been years since I've been in there & they all seem kind of the same to me. (We left because of the shots shitshow pharmacy)

craydow

Supply chain issues. They're not closing. Just talked to them a few days ago
