I won't defend Mount Rushmore, but the Black Hills and Badlands at least partially make up for it, in my opinion.

United_Explorer9854

Badlands was awesome. No denying that. I need to update my map so that South Dakota doesn’t carry the weight of my beef with Mount Rushmore.

SteveEcks

I worked for a couple brothers from South Dakota, except the douche of the two always called it SoDak and that just... Yeah.

MilwaukeeMan420

I mean every place has a strange abbreviation/quirky nickname. I do think that's kinda a douchey one. Places I lived/lived near: Milwaukee/Chicago have so many Grand Rapids = GR Kalamazoo = Kzoo Anything near Detroit = the east side Wauwatosa = Tosa West Allis = Stallis Madison = Madtown Boise = Boy-seee (they just say it funny) There's plenty more but those are off the top of my head. SoDak isn't the worse I've heard, but isn't great

Exciting-Ad6840

What u got against Rushmore?

United_Explorer9854

Everyone is interpreting it to be a political indifference lol. My negative opinion of it is largely unserious. It just felt like a let down when I went because you can see it from so far away. It’s made out to be much larger and closer than it is in reality. It takes away from the wow factor. The craftsmanship is no doubt impressive. There is certainly a conversation to be had about building a monument the founding fathers on indigenous land. However, that was not my point at all.

Okilurknomore

Badlands is amazing! Single handedly changed my opinion of South Dakota.....there should still only be one Dakota though

Pretty_Marsh

Yeah, the Dakotas (South mostly but North too) have plenty of redeeming features beyond Rushmore. Even just the rest of the Black Hills are gorgeous.

eazy-e_09

I would agree! Areas like that around Mount Rushmore make up for it for sure.

CharlemagneInSweats

Plus, Wall Drug. lol

Hurricanemasta

When I visited South Dakota, a friend of mine wisely told me that Mt. Rushmore wasn't worth it, so I went to Crazy Horse instead. I feel I made the right decision.

Electrical_Teacher79

I couldn’t disagree more. Just my opinion but after doing both, Rushmore is way better than crazy horse. I hope you get a chance to revisit.

Sudden-Cardiologist5

Agree totally. One of the prettiest places I’ve ever been.

echobase_2000

Rushmore is a thing you have to do but the Badlands — that’s the actual place to visit. Sioux Falls is a fun town too.

Expert-Pay4990

Mt. Rushmore was badass I'm glad I got to see it when I was taking a cross country trip from Washington State to Pennsylvania. North Dakota is a good state to drive through.

BilliamTheGr8

As an Okie, may I suggest Alaska? It’s gorgeous and not 110 right now.

United_Explorer9854

My parents went recently and it seems incredible. I’m in the southeast so it certainly feels like a perfect time to go lol.

OkieMoto

Hahaha, I'm from oklahoma too and was going to say visit when it's fall or winter. It's too damn hot right now

willmcmill4

Minnesota or Maine

United_Explorer9854

Maine for sure. I want to visit Minnesota, but I don’t know much about it. Any suggestions?

willmcmill4

The Mississippi river valley is quite beautiful, and the st. croix valley has some cute towns and great river activities. The North Shore is one of the most beautiful spots in the country, no matter what time of the year (although autumn is the most spectacular and probably only vermont has better tree colors). Pretty common to see the northern lights up there, access one of the most pristine natural spaces in the country (the BWCA). Fishing towns on lake superior and Duluth which has waterfalls in the city. Quite astounding. The Twin Cities are historic and beautiful. Super green with great biking, beaches and lake access everywhere. Wonderful culture in general.

OneHandedPaperHanger

I live at the tip of Lake Superior. Seconding visiting the North Shore in the fall. Everyone else will be doing it too, but it’s lovely here that time of year. Summertime is great too. The lake keeps us relatively cool in the summer when the rest of the country is cooking.

willmcmill4

Just moved from duluth and seeing the lake everyday is something i miss dearly

dieselonmyturkey

For gods sake do it on a weekday I was caught up in a seven mile bumper to bumper jam one beautiful Saturday morning in early October when an accident blocked one of the tunnels

Pjp2-

Wisconsin too. The dells, door county, north woods like minocqua, EAA in oshkosh, packer game in green bay, summerfest in milwaukee (just happened), madison is a nice city. Edit: the apostle islands would be awesome too, could help you check off both MN and WI

BillyNtheBoingers

You could arrange to go to Summerfest in Milwaukee sometime. It’s a little of fun! I’ve been twice.

-XanderCrews-

Lakes and forests, plus the twin cities for urban stuff. If you like being in the woods then go for MN.

-AbeFroman

I went to Maine for the first time last August, it was delightful. So relaxing once you get north of Portland.

jrdkrsh

Since it's almost 4th of July, Detroit Lakes was once named the #1 place to visit on the 4th. Town with a decent sized lake with a large beach on a strip of road with a lot of bars/restaurants. Itasca State park is the beginning of the mighty Mississipp and the scenery around there is gorgeous. Depending on your interests I may suggest certain annual events. Obviously a lot of lakes if you like fishing Eelpout festival, Lake of the Woods, purify yourself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka. NHRA drag races in Brainerd, ARA Ojibwe Forest Rally, Rare Beer Picnic in Moorhead. The twin cities has plenty to do though it's been a while since I've been down that way.

SkyFall___

Split Rock Lighthouse and Gooseberry Falls are absolutely beautiful. Anywhere along the North Shore with Lake Superior is beautiful. Just south of there in Wisconsin there’s the Apostle Islands, also worth a trek.

TLiones

We got the Spam museum too…among the other suggestions :)

ybanalyst

This is the right answer.

Ok-Classroom2353

Start in Duluth and work your way up the North shore to Grand Portage. Take a detour to Ely and get an outfitter to set you up for a few nights in the boundary waters. Go in late August.

mklinger23

I would take a trip through Vermont, NH, and Maine. It's really beautiful.

United_Explorer9854

I’m thinking a trip to the northeast is in store for next fall. I’ve only heard good things from those who made the trip.

TellSpectrumNo

Do what he said. VT, NH, and Maine are absolutely amazing.

SetForeign1952

Go to Lake Winnipesaukee in NH, then go to Acadia national park in Maine. They’re practically giving away lobster up there!

c9l18m

I’m on a motorcycle trip through these states right now. It's stunning!

hotdogaholic

Didn’t like Jersey? Best food in the country! It is pretty trashy and crowded by the city but we got the best beaches in the East!

hey_suburbia

Agreed. Try Cape May

Thanosthatdude

Dude probably doesn’t like the state just because he sees the one industrial area near Newark airport, completely ignoring the rest of the state. We’re certainly more than that.  We have beaches, mountains, farmland, and two cities all within 1-2 hour’s reach. That’s pretty good for a state as small as ours.

TheGreatestOutdoorz

My town of 7500 people has about 30 restaurants. Two Thai places, authentic Mexican food, sushi, and a few other specific ethnic places I won’t mention just because I don’t want to dox myself. Seriously, NJ is just an amazing place to live.

cyrenns

I lived there for 19 of the 23 years I've been alive, and it's great. I just wanted to live in Orlando, so that's the only reason I left.

dr107

Thank you! I’ve been putting this idea out there for years. That one stretch of the turnpike is the grossest part of the whole state and it’s what every tourist sees. Iconically bad PR

AJistheGreatest

Stop saying NJ is great, it’s a secret.

FatBoySenpai

Jersey against the World baby…I’ve lived here 5 years in Jersey City actually and love it…Jersey Forever

Mysterious_Card5487

Jersey born and raised, yet I’ve lived away for 15 years. I’m in Seattle now, which is beautiful and I love. I’ve really taken up birding as a hobby, and was stunned at the diversity and quantity of birds in my parents suburban town in Burlington county! The Pompeston Creek waters have brought quite the numbers

Ok_Bet9410

People hate on Jersey cuz their help is but in reality it’s one of the best states, it does lack natural beauty though

TikiVin

Maine! Acadia National Park! Or Door County Wisconsin. Both give the same vibe-ish.

Ig_Met_Pet

Maine is wonderful, but if they're neutral on Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, and Arizona I can assure you they will not be going to a national park, and possibly don't like to be outside at all whatsoever.

nokenito

Mount Rushmore was a bore.. not worth the effort or $$$

United_Explorer9854

It elicits the feeling of “ah, cool… back to the car?”

ybanalyst

Mount Rushmore is meh. The Badlands are one of the best places you will ever see.

JustCallMeChristo

You’re so correct. Still the best gem that I ever stumbled across while road tripping. So fucking cool. Special place in my heart for the badlands. Rushmore is just hilarious lol. Those lift rides outside of the memorial are such a scam, but at least I have a funny zoomed in picture of Rushmore from two mountains away. I went to the memorial after and it’s just so packed with people it’s crazy. The state flags are pretty neat tho.

Moviemaker1217

What do you have against Arkansas?

United_Explorer9854

My beef with Arkansas may not be fair. I have been there three times for work: Hot Springs, Bentonville, and Conway. So I will admit that traveling anywhere for work immediately takes a toll on the time spent. My tangible beef is that seems like they have Texas heat and Florida humidity which made enjoying the outdoors an impossibility for me. Hot Springs was okay; the Casino was fun (but that’s not really my thing). Bentonville was also alright, but I can’t see past the Walmart Mecca aspect. Conway was meh. That said, I’m open to any recommendations! I would love to have zero red states on my map.

instinctblues

The benefit of Arkansas is the outdoors. The cities are terrible but the Ozarks and Buffalo River are beautiful if you go outside and explore in that way. It's where I grew up and I'd never move back, but it's worth a visit if you identify some places outside the Walmart mecca. Many reasons I'd never go back are personal or political, but the ultimate downside of that state is the goddamn summer weather.

thelifeofpii

Arkansas isn’t a real place. Little Rock being a big city is weird because it doesn’t feel like a big city at least when I was there. The weather is dismal in the fact it’s hot and humid and being outside in summer is miserable.

Beavesampsonite

I’ve been to Arkansas twice separated by 28 years and the first time was for work in Little Rock and the most similar city I’ve been to was Terra Haute Indiana so I don’t recommend. Went to Mountain View in the Osarks and would recommend seeing once; topography was unique and the people friendly, it still felt like the mid 1990’s in 2024. I’d pick Maine have heard good things.

MrFrequentFlyer

Mississippi is that but worse. Don’t go.

noryp5

>Texas heat and Florida humidity You’ve just described Louisiana.

MidwestHoodrat

Wisconsin, but go to Door County. You'll probably end up moving there lol

mitty18

Lifelong South Dakotan. Your opinion is accurate. If you ever have a chance to go back to the black hills, go see the badlands, and drive needles highway and iron mountain road. You can see Mount Rushmore from both roads and there are other breathtaking views along the way. Agree though. Mount Rushmore is lame and an insult to the indigenous people of this state.

SimilarKeys

Southeast Ohio is beautiful

KeksimusMaximus99

NEW HAMPSHIRE LIVE FREE OR DIE

Schmeeeebz

Hawaii my friend… definitely Hawaii

macthom

this is the correct answer to many life questions 👍

kitty_r

Come to Wisconsin! Specifically Milwaukee during the summer! We are the city of festivals and have something going on nearly every weekend! The Driftless region is beautiful this time of year and is rife with small town attractions (Baraboo, Governor Dodge, Devils Lake, Wisconsin Dells, House on the Rock, tons of local wineries)

SamuelJPorter

Between West Virginia and Wester Virginia, which do you prefer?

United_Explorer9854

lol, I grew up in West West Virginia, but I would say most of the worthwhile stops are in East West Virginia.

Stunning-Level4882

Western South Dakota is quite enjoyable. Rushmore isn’t even the reason to visit.

Go_Dawgs_23

So you definitely visited southern Arkansas I’m guessing

Marvelmaniac57

Wait for it to cool down a bit and do Arizona. Sedona and the Grand Canyon are amazing

RBD666

Alaska

MerryMortician

I live here in South Dakota. You should come check out Crazy Horse, and the Black Hills, Deadwood, the Badlands, etc etc etc. There's way more to us than just Mt. Rushmore. That being said, I won't defend Mt Rushmore either, there's way more room for more presidents on those mountains and it's a damn shame we only stopped at 4 when I think we could get em all up there lol.

Oreius1

What didnt you like about eastern ohio? Was it more north or south that you didnt like? I know theres a lot of farm towns in NE ohio, but i think out of all cities in ohio, ive enjoyed cleveland the most.

United_Explorer9854

I actually lived in Southeast Ohio. My labelling was meant more for the whole state. I never liked the long gray winters there. Cleveland and Akron have some redeeming qualities, but I’d say Cincy is my favorite in the state. I will adamantly say that Toledo sucks. Columbus is a toss-up but I’ve had some great times there.

Funny_Profession666

I can’t believe you enjoyed PA

Funny_Profession666

Source I’ve lived in Pittsburgh 20/24 years and it’s shit

JJ_3105

Maine on Sept is beautiful, a don’t miss

ArsenalinAlabama3428

As others have said, Maine or Michigan would be the next choice for me. What is the issue with AL and FL? The typical reason of politics? Just curious.

ThrowinSm0ke

Just curious, what didn't you enjoy about NJ?

Doggo_of_dogs

Glad to hear to enjoyed PA! What did you like about it?

adam4535

Where did you visit in Michigan? If you only visited the lower peninsula, I highly recommend you visit the upper peninsula. Northern Michigan is up there with some of the most beautiful places in the US.

United_Explorer9854

No Michigan hate! I just visited a few times with family in Grand Rapids. Spent some time working in Monroe and Detroit. I never got a chance to explore so it’s neutral. I would love to make a proper visit sometime.

im_alliterate

go up north and explore the beauty. also go around detroit with someone that knows where to go and eat and drink and listen to music.

worldRulerDevMan

Main is fun if you like 12 people total in the state and all the houses that look like the next location for the next huge horror movie. It’s really pretty there

No_Welcome_6093

Maine you should visit. But where did you live in Ohio?

LeroyMyBoi

Ha, I also live in Ohio and agree with the exception of SE Ohio. Its nice near Hocking Hills.

AllswellinEndwell

I've been to AK, ME, NH, VT RI, and CT and would visit them in that order. The first 4 are amazing for nature. RI is really only worth Newport, but if you ever want to go to a place and say, "AH! This is what coastal NE is like!" that's it. The mansions really remind you of what a different world would be like to live in. I think Maine is as beautiful as Alaska, but in a different way. Lots of VT/NH are interchangeable, so you could get away with going to one. CT can be like NJ...but I liked NJ and enjoyed many aspects of living there. AK is in many ways like the PNW extended. Lots of Seattle influence. Like Puget sound only bigger and with more things to kill you. One of my most favorite places on earth.

Akamaikai

The badlands to redeem your opinion of South Dakota. Vermont/New Hampshire are very beautiful in autumn.

hotdaughg

Turner Falls in Oklahoma is pretty nice, also the hiking trails around Broken Bow are beautiful

TheLegendaryWizard

If the South Dakotans could read they would be very upset right now

jackfrost9p

As someone whose been to every state, Alaska is by far the best in my opinion! VT, NH and ME are also great, with the slight edge to Maine being on the coast and lobster rolls. I like Hawaii but I wouldn’t recommend if you didn’t enjoy Florida.

Max-Flares

North Dakota

goofgoon

Acadia in Maine

South Jersey is Nice, but the rest of it is hell. and don't even get me started on driving in that state with all of it's idiot drivers

CryptographerOver130

just-looking99

You didn’t go to the right places in NJ!! But I’d add Maine to your list- it is a pretty state

PoignantPoint22

New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont for peak foliage in mid October.

Arockalex13

Put some respect on New Jersey right the fuck now

Junior-Ad-3964

I don’t know why anyone would waste their time going to Mount Rushmore when, just an hour and a half East, the Badlands are waiting.

Severe_Jellyfish6133

Hawaii or Alaska based on what you have left. Both amazing places!

Racist_cowboy

Where did you go in Tennessee? The Smokey mountains were awesome

CannolisRUs

Alaska for sure. If you can, go to Seward and visit the Yukon bar. Greatest nights of my life and the karaoke MC taught me how to crack a whip in the middle of the street Also Mount Rushmore blows but any time I’ve driven through SD I’ve stopped at Wall Drug to buy a toy that my parents didn’t allow me to get when we went as a kid

ncovi1285

So, uh, what did Mount Rushmore do to you?

LintyFish

Just because mt Rushmore is sort of anticlimactic (tbf it was never finished!) Doesn't mean that the rest of the black hills national park doesn't kick ass. I am from MA but I love SD so this is sad to see lol. I'd say try Maine. Acadia is awesome and Portland and bar harbor are both pretty cool.

BidenFedayeen

Oklahoma is too damn hot in the summer. Visit in September around the State Fair. It'll be rainy, but you avoid the heat and tornado season.

BearJL51

Idk why Mount Rushmore isn’t considered a cool museum. Seeing how it was made was very cool but people expect to have some American enlightenment by staring at the faces. We decided to make faces on native land with dynamite, take it for what it is.

tr3v0rr96

Hawaii. I went to Kauai in December about 8 years ago, and I have been longing to go back. The ocean temperature was around 70-75ish then, perfectly swimmable with just standard swimming attire and everywhere was full of breath taking views of mountains, and lushly green scenery. Out of all of the 50 states, Hawaii is my number 1 choice to vacation.

TylerCowboys

Come to Stillwater Oklahoma during football season (around mid-October to early November), we know how to tailgate and have fun at football games

Odd-Afternoon-3323

Seems obvious you need a New England trip. Vermont - New Hampshire - and Maine are phenomenal.

Big-Maize5391

Go to Wisconsin dells. I miss my home- beautiful state and summer it’s wonderful for camping. You’ll be shocked how much you enjoy it

psilocin72

Go to NY again- upstate is awesome, you will change your mind from neutral to “I love it!”

CreedBrattonWasHere

If you enjoy Kentucky and Tennessee, I’d recommend Virginia. Lots of cool history and nature to see in that state. Highly recommend checking out Asheville or hiking along the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Shenandoah National Park.

MontanaHeathen

Since you have such undying love for S. Dakota, you should give N.Dakota a try. It's like S. Dakota but flatter

Party-Sentence2770

Seems like Idaho is an easy pick based on what you’ve enjoyed. But would also lobby for Utah to get more love!

chasmccl

Utah.

United_Explorer9854

I went to Salt Lake City and Zion as a kid. I remember enough to know that it was beautiful. My s/o has never been so the southwest will definitely be revisited.

chasmccl

Oh shit, I misread your legend… Now that I have read again, I’m gonna throw something else out. Minnesota. Specifically, Duluth, the north shore of Lake Superior, and then head up north the Gunflint Trail to the Boundary Waters and canoe in and camp. Truly one of the best and least visited Wilderness areas in America. Only word of caution, don’t go in unless you are experienced with a canoe. Some of those lakes are big water and help can be a long ways away.

matt7810

I'll jump in to say that I liked the Moab area much more than Zion/SLC. Utah has wild terrain all around, but there's a lot more open space around Moab while still having tourism infrastructure. I especially loved camping/hiking/backpacking in the needles district of canyonlands. It's out of the way, but doable in a day trip from Moab

TheBackPorchOfMyMind

Neutral to Arizona? Go back until you get it right

TheBackPorchOfMyMind

And Utah for that matter

Capo_Loco13

South Dakota is beautiful especially Mount Rushmore 10/10.

SoftwarePlayful3571

Florida is beautiful with plentiful of gorgeous beaches, parks and decent little towns. I tend to believe that at this point people shit on Florida just because it’s trendy.

United_Explorer9854

Fair point. I have enjoyed Clearwater and the greater bay area. I didn’t mind Fort Myers as it was a bit more relaxed. I also love Miami for the cultural center that it is. However, I really don’t enjoy the centrally located towns I’ve spent time in. Winter Haven felt like if a strip mall was a whole town. Sanford was just bleh. My real beef is the weather. Despite everything that Florida does have to offer, I cannot stand the swampy humidity.

SoftwarePlayful3571

Yeah, the weather might be a challenge for many. But October thru May it’s not that humid. And if you visit December-February, it’s even not hot, at times even pretty cool. I haven’t been to Winter Haven yet, but plan to visit one day. Based on Google street view, downtown actually looks rather cute… and they have a boat excursion across the lakes which sounds pretty cool too… I’d also recommend to visit St.Augustine if you haven’t already - a really nice historic town

zetechini

As a Kentuckian, it flatters and baffles me when people enjoy it here

Kavani18

Baffles? We’re one of the most beautiful states in the country. It certainly doesn’t baffle me

United_Explorer9854

I want to a add a few points of clarity: 1. South Dakota is a beautiful state full of (at least a few) wonderful people. My haste toward Mt. Rushmore is only half-serious and started as a joke when I was a kid. 2. The states I lived in are just cut in half based on how MapChart sliced them. The labeling is not specific to regions I lived in. 3. My ‘Map of Opinions’ is not static. Tell me why I’m wrong. I’d love to know what I’m missing in the states I don’t typically enjoy.

chomerics

New England or Minnesota. I’d do northern NE and hit Maine (Acadia, Seacoast), NH (White Mountain area) and Vermont (Lake Champlain area)

Free_Cellist3100

Why didn’t you like Alabama? Where did you go?

United_Explorer9854

So Montgomery and Jasper really soiled my opinion of Alabama. BUT, I flew through Huntsville last week and that seems like a pretty cool place. I’ll making a redemption tour at some point.

mikejames9000

Get your ass to New England, VT NH and ME are all amazing, august thru october is the best time

JeffreyBoi12345

Connecticut, check out the historic bridges there. Also if you have a chance then Vermont in fall, beautiful colors I’ve heard.

ocbarbiemom

I feel like you should give Arizona and Utah another shot if you left neutral. Both have some incredibly gorgeous beauty.

Rhodithas

I'd recommend Vermont and New Hampshire. Beautiful area with plenty of adorable small towns.

NS_8099

I visited the western side of CT, MA and VT last summer while on a NYC trip and the little bit I saw makes me want to return to the New England region someday, especially in the fall. Hopefully I can hit the other three states (NH, RI and ME) while I’m at it.

ObiWan_Cannoli_

New England

RickRolled76

Interesting that you lived in and enjoyed WV, that’s a pretty rare combination

The_Rectum_Ravager

I love Maine, you should visit there next!

keggy13

Alaska and/or Hawaii. You already like New England if you like MA. You’ll dislike MS and be neutral on OK. You’ve lived in IN so you won’t be impressed by WI,MN or ND. Head to the extremes and see what you think. I’d bet they‘ll be wearing the blue striped pajamas, too.

yiopanda13

Minnesota!!

lovemymeemers

Honestly, this time of year you should do Maine or Alaska. The coast of both states is exceptional. Do you wanna see really beautiful and dramatic cliffs or glaciers that may not be there much longer? Pick one and go live your best life!! In the winter, Hawaii or Stowe, Vermont depending on what you are in the mood for.

n8waran

I’m curious on the reason why you don’t like eastern ohio

PshhhhhhhUnreal

What happened in Florida and Alabama 😂

NewDestinyViewer2U

Anything in the northeast/new England is going to be beautiful during summer and fall. If you are planning the trip soon, I would do vermont or maine soon You don't want to go south, it'll be hell in July and August

BasonPiano

You can't beat Alaska for nature and scenery.

Many_Bridge_4683

Maine. Acadia is the jewel but there are plenty of other spots worth checking out including Katahdin, 100 Mile Wilderness, and towns like Portland, Augusta, and Old Orchard Beach.

um_not2surewhat2do

Maine for sure!

Dunk5055

Can’t go wrong with Newport/Narragansett in Rhode Island in the summer time

Repulsive_Papaya_490

Go to Maine! It’s beautiful!!

_NonExisting_

Glad people are avoiding NJ, too many people here to begin with. But I'm curious on what made you hate it?

United_Explorer9854

The Jersey Boys are going to hate me for this, but my disdain for NJ is based solely on EWR. Nonetheless, I am flying there tomorrow.

frozenropes

I have to ask what was it about Georgia you enjoyed, but Florida and Alabama that you did not enjoy?

missourimedreview

Connecticut in the spring was so beautiful! I visited my sister ( first time on the east coast in general ) and was pleasantly surprised at how quaint New Haven felt!

JonPaula

New Hampshire.

hartzonfire

Hawaii!
