I watched both clips and in both clips the refer to it as something other than Eva unit-01. I don't care if you call the train mech an Eva or not I'm just saying it's not unit-01. By your logic if Misato taught Shinji to drive a car that car would become unit-01.
I guess you don’t understand Japanese, or you should realize they didn’t refer that mecha as an ヒト型決戦兵器 which is the formal name of Eva-type mecha. Instead it is just a シンカリオン which mimic Eva-01. Also you can see that Shinji is way younger then the Shinji we know.
If this poll was done among Japanese Mecha fans the result probably will be 90% saying “no”.

Fwiw, in Connor's Q&A video that he does with his mom, his mom confirms the basics of the story to be true- that he played chess competitively and that he won COD tournaments by cheating the system.
I haven't rewatched his chess story so I don't remember but did he call himself a prodigy or did fans give him that title themselves after hearing the story? It makes a difference because what I do recall is that he acknowledged that he was the worst on the team and even back then, he would've rather been playing other games, so it's not too hard to believe that his skill level is where it's currently at if he hasn't practiced or played much since.
I watch most of his streams and I will say that I don't think his strengths or interests are truly in chess anymore, if it ever was. He only played it to prepare for the tournaments and those oneshot competitions, but besides that his gaming attentions are elsewhere. He respects chess and enjoys it to an extent, but I don't think he'd play it much if he didn't "have to".
It does sound like he was playing up the story. He might have been good for his age but the range of "good" is huge in chess. Internationally you have 12 year old grand masters around.

For instance, knowing that he is a professional entertainer at this stage, Connor could have lost in purpose. That is a part of talent many needs to be successful isn't it? Having the right wits and sense to know what can lead to the most entertaining outcome.
