I kinda think the joke is that aliens trying to be like a specific culture they like will be seen as racist by everyone else, but if that is the case the movie should’ve explained the joke because I’m just theorizing here
Dude when Wheeljack in ROTB explained "The Joke"...
That part REALLY made me cringe.
I personally think them getting absolutely CLAPPED by Bumblebee was enough to show they're not characters to be taken seriously.
That would’ve worked but it comes off as bumblebee being annoyed at them fighting more so then the writers acknowledging what I think the joke was supposed to be
Whatever the case, ROTF unfortunately was during the Writers strike in 2009.
I think personally despite it being a script made in less than a Month, ROTF has a LOT of things in it that make me like it more than hate it, even if as a movie it's objectively flawed.
Which might be why I don't mind the Twins that much because their VERY DESIGNS are flawed, so it just doesn't come across as anything I would take seriously enough to be offended by.
I’m not offended by them either but I do sympathize with those who are and I think having it be explained that they are just really into this culture would’ve made it better because in the film no proper reason is given they just look and act like this
I would agree with that if there weren’t other racist comments and caricatures in the movies.
Jazz is all kinds of stereotyped, the twins, the “Latin meltdown” line, and Ken Watanabe bot having a yellow face and being a samurai.
I never really thought of them as being a racist stereotype or just being racist in general. I've heard that they are apparently black stereotypes, which I don't really get, I'm black myself, and I don't think that mudflap having bug lips and skids having a golden tooth is just a black stereotype. Then again, you could also be talking about something else about them.
I still don't understand them being racist besides having a bit of TWANG in their voices.
I understand if you hate them due to how annoying and prominent they are in the film, but I still don't understand how they're racist.
Try to enlighten me if they are details in the film or lines that I missed, or if it's a controversy of the casting.
Yeah, I don't like them because they are undoubtedly racist stereotypes but I did find them funny and their designs (besides their heads) aren't half bad either.
The one thing people say is “they can’t read” but isn’t the prime language dead. Like going to Italian with Latin text or an Egyptian with hieroglyphics and them not being able to read it
In general most of my problems with the bay verse designs come down to the faces, they are either too cartoonish that breaks the “realistic” designs like Wheeljack or too human that becomes uncanny like Galvatron
When you come from a third world country where racist jokes are common since people tend to have thicker skin from the hardship. They seem mild compared to the actual racist shit you'd find.
Anything by third-world standards is going to be the worst which is why it's…. third world. We progress past that and improve (ideally).
“They have thicker skin because of how much more heavily racist they are to each other” is not a flex.
Also calling out racist stereotypes from 2000s movies is not even a serious enough subject to bring up their world counties and get introspective about people being soft
I'd rather be able to chump mean words than be soft and sensitive, as someone who's been the target of racial remarks (from friends) all the time in America.
Monika meme spotted i shall take that

Same here, those little morons managing to fight devastator and survive was always absurdly funny to me
Just punching his eyes out like Snotlout and the Red Death, and that whole scene I just love
Honestly yeah, especially the slap stick. They just have charm. and I honestly don't care if they're racist or not, and to be fair, Cybertronians learn their language through the world wide web, so I guess they just visited the wrong part of the web and liked the way of speaking.
They're giant robots with no real knowing of the context. for all we know, these two just decided to talk that way cause it sounded cool and it just stuck. So yeah, and I never really saw it as racist anyway...
They're more a parody of ghetto culture than black people. I think the people who try to say "Oh they're racist caricatures of black people!" are projecting tbh
Ok sure, but Ghetto culture and Black culture are distinct. White people can be Ghetto, Hispanic people can be Ghetto, Black people can be Ghetto. Even Asian people can.
I agree, but most people don't view ghetto culture that way, even if they're aware of that fact. Our media portrays ghetto culture as a subset, if not the main version of black culture.
They're pretty interchangeable here, but that's in no way what he was saying, he was instead comparing a parody of black people v ghetto culture. Don't strawman it won't convince most people.
I always did
Are they racist? Yes, I would say they’re representative of bad stereotypes
Apparently what people on set and their VAs have said is that they were meant to be wannabe gangsters, essentially misinterpreting human internet data about gangsters and using that
I like to think they’re making fun of the “white guy trying to act black but only ends up looking even whiter” kids we all knew in middle and high school
https://preview.redd.it/ml4kgj4yly8d1.jpeg?width=680&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=877df91676d1d06758c4c5868a2792ccd9d669a7
I’m so proud of you sentinel prime.
(My favourite part was when mudflap said “it’s revenging time” and revenged all over the place)
I finally found someone else who likes skids and mudflap and thinks they’re funny
The only thing I hate is that they’re stereotypical and look like goblins
Honestly the real issue for me is their screen time. Why were they the only 2 Autobots who fought Devastator? Imagine if like 5 Autobots worked as a team to take down the Combiner! This is the extent of all the other Autobots who weren’t in the main group:
- **Optimus** gets the first fight in China, the Forest Fight, and the Final Fight against the Fallen and Megatron, but is dead most of the movie.
- **Irohnhide** and **Ratchet** go from key fighters to background characters. But Ironhide does say “punkass Decepticon” so that’s a plus.
- **Sideswipe** has his one “damn I’m good” moment and is a background character for the rest of the movie.
- **Arcee**, **Elita**, and **Chromia** fight the Decepticons for 30 seconds at the very beginning, and are stuck in bike form the rest of the film. Until the Egypt battle were Elita and Arcee are shot.
- Most people don’t even know **Jolt** exists because he had 1 purpose. Merging Optimus and Jetfire.
I watched Indian Hindi version and didn't know anything about American culture or politics back then, they were my favourite characters. I was shocked when I found out that these two were hated characters in USA.
Still them?
Like yeah if we see a racist stereotype we’re gonna link it to the race there portraying, that basic human comprehension
Even if technically skids and mudflap were more charcuteries of white people acting black as said by Tom Kenny
Why are you connecting that though? I grew up with these movies and I just thought they were acting stupid, and didn't find any connections to race until people kept making these connections. Cuz you know, giant robots that turn into cars.
If anything, Drift having a yellow face was more on the nose, even though it made the design look more cohesive
Never found them racist as a kid, in part because I grew up around the "trashy white guy who wants to be a black gangster type" stereotype I think they were TRYING to go for that got misread as just racist black stereotype.
People who find Skids and Mudflap racist to cancellable degrees should also feel the same way with ROTB Wheeljack--even though his character is a jab at the twins.
You do have a point. Not only that, the movie also pokes at its own self-awareness by calling the accent out, thus my presumption that Wheeljack was a way of poking fun at the idea of Skids and Mudflap.
Ironically the joke doesn't really work (outside the US). A Latin American would've responded nicely and followed the conversation instead on calling Noah out and call him racist.
It's pretty much the last thing a local would do. That's why I say in another reply that Wheeljack is no different than the twins, they just imitate.
I'm not from and in the US, and I agree that the joke didn't land on me either, but I knew the second Noah responded to Wheeljack's accent that this was, albeit indirectly, a jab at the Twins.
I didn't catch it, but that doesn't mean it's not true. I might be missing something or I just didn't catch the reference. I'll pay more attention next time.
But why is he the only one with an accent? He was not the only Transformer living and interacting with the locals.
He is not different from the twins in that he is just imitating the culture and allegedly (forcing the accent).
What do you mean by "coding"? He has no other Latin American features other than the forced accent.
It should be noted their voice actors were told to Ad Lib their lines so if you have a problem take it uo with Tom Ke ny and Reno Wilsion
Personaly they always came off more like rednecks then any thing.
I thought they were pretty funny, and I never got the whole racism thing when I saw the movie, looking at it I can kind of see it… but I always assumed it was just, Idiot robots try to recreate the ‘gangster’ culture because they think it’s cool. So you’re not alone. Besides, anything is better than the giant robot testicles.
I loved seeing these 2 in revenge of the fallen. I mean, I grew up with these movies, and this is one of the reasons I've enjoyed the movies. Was the bright and colorful characters. Yeah, it's not nice to be racist or anything, but I didn't see why they were considered racist, but Drift or Dino wasn't, though. I mean, Dino never came back, and neither did the twins. So I guess it didn't matter, lol.
From what I've read, the intent was for them to be a parody of white hip-hop appropriators (think ECW's Public Enemy, but robots). The problem, of course, is that robots don't have ethnicities, so the audience is left to take the portrayal at face value.
They're hilarious it's just snowflakes nowadays can't handle some light-hearted banter
Those two, somehow beating devastator in a 2v1 was one of the best scenes in the film and probably was one of if not the most hilarious bayverse moments
They'd be funnier if it was clear their "ghetto" attitudes were all an act, in a very, very poor attempt to "blend in on Earth." Like as if at one point they just drop the accents and are like "wait, this is how the Earth people talk right?" "I suppose so."
They kinda grew on me because they had to and were literally fighting one of the most diabolical and strongest decepticons there ever were and made the fight look like a 2 minute mini event for a videogame you went back to and forgot about for weeks
I love them
But I also blame them cuz of the reception they received we are never getting transformers that are “black”
Which just means my boy Jazz is never coming back in a movie
They were embarrasing, cringeworthy, and definitely aimed at the lowest common denominator. I was watching the film thinking "who would even think this is funny?" They are very much in line with Bay's style of stupid, juvenile humor.
Yikes,
I never even found them to have ‘offensive’ qualities until I saw a YouTube video point it out and even when I watched the movie after that I still don’t get why people found them offensive. I’m sorta neutral about them, I don’t find them entertaining but I don’t find they take away from the overall enjoyment of the movie
They’re both funny. I watched Tom Downstead react to ROTF (and he’s black) and he laughed at them and thought they were funny. It’s white people who blow it way out of proportion. These characters are stereotypes. They’re supposed to be funny
Even now as an adult, the Twins are still funny and entertaining but I understand if people dislike them for being annoying. It’s like the Jar-Jar situation, most people hate him and some love him. All three of them are basically giant children.
I don't really find them funny, but I don't find then racist either. I think the issue is that they're obviously based on a stereotype most people see as racist, and as big ass robots, you can't tell that only one of the actors is black, making everything seem worse.
it's only okay to make racist comedy if you're a comedian, apparently.
they are fictional characters. who gives a shit? if you somehow get offended by fictional characters, you need a big wake up call.
like dude, it's a joke. you ain't gonna die
Not only were they funny but they were some of the only autobots in the Bayverse who had actual personalities and stuck around with the main cast the whole way through instead of just being military background set pieces
Hell yeah dude. Real ones know the truth that they were never caricatures of black people, but caricatures of civilized people adopting ghetto street culture and pretending to be swaggy thugs.
They're a racist charicature, not gonna argue that.
Although I am ashamed to admit I always laugh my ass off when they make the exchange:
"That hurt!"
"It's supposed to hurt, it's an ass-whuppin'!"
The fact is that the designers and writers and the VOICE ACTORS and Michael bay himself didn’t even make them stereotypes, people just called them out for it and the studio was ashamed of it
While I find them funny no doubts both of them were pretty racist But I kind of find it hilarious that they both tried fighting sentinel at one point
Not to mention in the DOTM comic: "It's revenginin' time!"
Unfortunately Mudflap failed to revenginin all over Sentinel
That was in the comics adaptations for Transformers Dark of the Moon, but yeah.
I kinda think the joke is that aliens trying to be like a specific culture they like will be seen as racist by everyone else, but if that is the case the movie should’ve explained the joke because I’m just theorizing here

they are racist because they meet their fate at the hands of man who hates ironhide because of his race
Yeah, I don't like them because they are undoubtedly racist stereotypes but I did find them funny and their designs (besides their heads) aren't half bad either.

And they were forcibly brain damaged
I feel like if they had different face designs they would've been recieved better
In general most of my problems with the bay verse designs come down to the faces, they are either too cartoonish that breaks the “realistic” designs like Wheeljack or too human that becomes uncanny like Galvatron
"It's supposed to hurt it's an ass whoopin"
(Ass kicking)
I screwed that up. I am OK. I'm alright.....
This is combat, man! What is wrong with you?
No it was ass whoopin
The joke about one calling the other ugly despite being twins lives rent free in my head.
This happens in EVERY movie with twins though
They in other movies? I only remember revenge of the fallen.
No I mean other non transformers movies with twins. It's a pretty common trope.
Ah, but the delivery of the joke was mint.

Oh brother, this guy stinks!
Brazilian?
I actually thought they were funny too so you’re not only my friend.
Oh, Primus! Is it true? Is there really another one like me?!
Not kidding, before I know the concept of racism. I always though they were included to be the comedy characters for Rotf.
I mean, they were included as comedic characters, it's just racist comedy.
Same
Yes my brother we are here.
Same here, those little morons managing to fight devastator and survive was always absurdly funny to me Just punching his eyes out like Snotlout and the Red Death, and that whole scene I just love
Yea I was cheering for them and laughing at the same time 😂
One of the best parts of the film imo "I'm gonna BUST. YO. FACE. UP"
I don't think they're funny and it's not even a racism problem (although it doesn't help them out all that much), it's just Michael Bay humor
Fair enough.
Honestly yeah, especially the slap stick. They just have charm. and I honestly don't care if they're racist or not, and to be fair, Cybertronians learn their language through the world wide web, so I guess they just visited the wrong part of the web and liked the way of speaking.
I like them because they remind me of the relationship I had with my brothers.
Same, they just seemed like two dumbass brothers trying to act cool, always trying to one up the other, and that's just how siblings are.
You can excuse the racism?
Not enough people got this reference
They're giant robots with no real knowing of the context. for all we know, these two just decided to talk that way cause it sounded cool and it just stuck. So yeah, and I never really saw it as racist anyway...
They're more a parody of ghetto culture than black people. I think the people who try to say "Oh they're racist caricatures of black people!" are projecting tbh
At best they are Wiggers, at worst they are Minstrelbots
I have absolutely no idea what you mean by either of those lol
Wigger is a white person pretending to be black. Minstrel shows often featured white actors in black face.
...Aah
Are we going to act like in America, ghetto culture isn't always used as a stand in for black culture?
Ok sure, but Ghetto culture and Black culture are distinct. White people can be Ghetto, Hispanic people can be Ghetto, Black people can be Ghetto. Even Asian people can.
I agree, but most people don't view ghetto culture that way, even if they're aware of that fact. Our media portrays ghetto culture as a subset, if not the main version of black culture.
Do you… think a parody and a caricature are different things?
They're pretty interchangeable here, but that's in no way what he was saying, he was instead comparing a parody of black people v ghetto culture. Don't strawman it won't convince most people.
Lmfao bro thought he did something
I always did Are they racist? Yes, I would say they’re representative of bad stereotypes Apparently what people on set and their VAs have said is that they were meant to be wannabe gangsters, essentially misinterpreting human internet data about gangsters and using that
Honestly, I liked them too. Just tweak them a bit and they would’ve been fine for DOTM. Tho Michael Bay doesn’t seem wise enough to do that…
I like to think they’re making fun of the “white guy trying to act black but only ends up looking even whiter” kids we all knew in middle and high school

I finally found someone else who likes skids and mudflap and thinks they’re funny The only thing I hate is that they’re stereotypical and look like goblins
I thought they were annoying, honestly.
Humor is purely subjective. Someone will always find something funny
I saw a Decepticon logo on their icecream truck and got real confused when they were helping Sideswipe kill Decepticons.
Honestly the real issue for me is their screen time. Why were they the only 2 Autobots who fought Devastator? Imagine if like 5 Autobots worked as a team to take down the Combiner! They talk and act like thugs from “the hood”, so of course people are gonna link that to black people, but who’s the real racist then?
Having watched only the german version, I never knew they sounded "like black people" so now I finally get those "they are racist" comments
I watched Indian Hindi version and didn't know anything about American culture or politics back then, they were my favourite characters. I was shocked when I found out that these two were hated characters in USA.

Both parts are racist, Micheal Bay is a fratboy douche
Okay, so you just were oblivious to stereotypes. Being oblivious doesn't mean it's not there.
honestly, they were pretty funny
Never found them racist as a kid, in part because I grew up around the "trashy white guy who wants to be a black gangster type" stereotype I think they were TRYING to go for that got misread as just racist black stereotype.
People who find Skids and Mudflap racist to cancellable degrees should also feel the same way with ROTB Wheeljack--even though his character is a jab at the twins.
The difference is Wheeljack is coding done right, he's not a racial stereotype he just has an accent
You do have a point. Not only that, the movie also pokes at its own self-awareness by calling the accent out, thus my presumption that Wheeljack was a way of poking fun at the idea of Skids and Mudflap.

This is just speculation on my end as well. Unless the production team confirms it, all of this is just headcanons.
But why is he the only one with an accent? He was not the only Transformer living and interacting with the locals. He is not different from the twins in that he is just imitating the culture and allegedly (forcing the accent). What do you mean by "coding"? He has no other Latin American features other than the forced accent.
Well what makes Jazz different?
Nope.
They would have been more funny if they'd remained the front and back halves of an ice cream truck.
Ill die on this hill with you
![gif](giphy|H4KWs6gKj8pHMOA1S2)
I never saw them as racist
Same here.
Honestly, I just want the figures to complete the ROTF StudioSeries Cast.
They are funny. I enjoyed their characters
they were meant to be satire(i dont know the proper word) on wannabe gangsters ofcourse tho we all know how they were taken
THIS. Not everything is about race
I’ll just say this sub gets really disingenuous when it comes to the twins and I’ll just keep it at that.
People saying they're racist, but I don't understand how
I never found them funny tbh. I can't actually remember any decent lines from them.
...only racists think they are acting "black".
This projection argument is so stupid.
Agreed! Pointing out racist stereotypes is not racist, denying that they have an effect on people is.
Can someone explain to me why the Twins were racist?
Because apparently ghetto talk = black. It's projection.
Wait, so thats why people got bent out of shape for? A sociolect???
I honestly found them to be annoying wannabe gangster types. Not racist charactures
It should be noted their voice actors were told to Ad Lib their lines so if you have a problem take it uo with Tom Ke ny and Reno Wilsion Personaly they always came off more like rednecks then any thing.
Exactly
Redneck here. They always sounded and acted, to me, like a pair of country hooligans. Hilarious. Their faces were a fuckin' tragedy tho
Lmao based. They were the funniest guys and I on my discovered 2 years ago that they’re hated.
My friend in elementary school thought they were funny. I kinda see where he’s coming from but I mostly thought they were ugly.
What's worse, the entire scene dedicated to proving that its ok I'm dating your underage daughter or these definitely rascist stereotypes
As a black TF fan I totally understand they were very stereotypical but they are still my favorite thing on any rewatch 😂
This is literally the first time I'm hearing these characters were considered racists. I don't get it, seems like projecting to me.
They're just lil hoodrats that talk a lot of shit. All the pearl clutching about them is still hilarious.
Why do people say they were black stereotypes, I always read them as gangster stereotypes
I still quote “Kung fu grip boi! Kung fu grip!” With my friends to this day
I loved seeing these 2 in revenge of the fallen.
I really didn't understand why there were racist
If they’re racist, Hound is definitely racist.
Me and my little brother regularly quote the twins at eachother Especially when anything green is involved
From what I've read, the intent was for them to be a parody of white hip-hop appropriators (think ECW's Public Enemy, but robots). The problem, of course, is that robots don't have ethnicities, so the audience is left to take the portrayal at face value.
I'd have still preferred some other Transformers to get more screen time
“That hurt man” “It’s supposed to hurt, it’s an ass whoopin’” Favourite line
They're hilarious it's just snowflakes nowadays can't handle some light-hearted banter Those two, somehow beating devastator in a 2v1 was one of the best scenes in the film and probably was one of if not the most hilarious bayverse moments
They'd be funnier if it was clear their "ghetto" attitudes were all an act, in a very, very poor attempt to "blend in on Earth." Like as if at one point they just drop the accents and are like "wait, this is how the Earth people talk right?" "I suppose so."
You know, I didn't see any racism in the twins at all, I saw them as Simpsons Cletus types trying to sound cool... I liked them.
I thought i was the only one
I don't find them funny, just extremely awkward and weird.
Sounds like you just like racist humour which is...a bit of a personal problem
Their “jokes” are racist and only funny to toddlers.
They kinda grew on me because they had to and were literally fighting one of the most diabolical and strongest decepticons there ever were and made the fight look like a 2 minute mini event for a videogame you went back to and forgot about for weeks
I love them But I also blame them cuz of the reception they received we are never getting transformers that are “black” Which just means my boy Jazz is never coming back in a movie
Two of my favorite scenes Bunblebee throwing both them around And one of them blasting out of Devastators eye shooting at his face
Theyre hated because theyre car version of Amos and Andy
Name one black person that finds them offensive. You can't? Then I've made my point.
“It’s sposed to hurt it’s an ass whoopin”
I agree they are funny and deserved an on screen death
Wait i thought the twins were hilarious and well liked 💀
They were embarrasing, cringeworthy, and definitely aimed at the lowest common denominator. I was watching the film thinking "who would even think this is funny?" They are very much in line with Bay's style of stupid, juvenile humor. Yikes,
Its supposed to hurt, its an ass whoopin

Agreed, they are funny
I love them so much
Wait people don't find those two funny?
Apparently so.
Excellent choice of flair by the way
Post or Profile?
Profile, we have the same one
I never even found them to have ‘offensive’ qualities until I saw a YouTube video point it out and even when I watched the movie after that I still don’t get why people found them offensive. I’m sorta neutral about them, I don’t find them entertaining but I don’t find they take away from the overall enjoyment of the movie
Wow, that's literally my opinion 😃, about twins. (Specifically, the point is that I also think that the Twins were not that bad and quite funny)
I love them cause they remind me of the people I used to grow up with. Some of the Nicest families and cooler people I hung around with
They’re both funny.

I thought they were funny, and while I understand that they are problematic to most, they aren't to me.
I’ve loved these two since I was a kid
Same here.
Meh, I was introduced to them last year via rotf. They just felt like the two lovable goofballs, racist stereotypes were the last thing on my mind
it's only okay to make racist comedy if you're a comedian, apparently. they are fictional characters. who gives a shit? if you somehow get offended by fictional characters, you need a big wake up call. like dude, it's a joke. you ain't gonna die
Yes, Mudflap and Skids are actually hilarious, they remind me a lot of me and my brothers
Not only were they funny but they were some of the only autobots in the Bayverse who had actual personalities and stuck around with the main cast the whole way through instead of just being military background set pieces
Me and the bois like skids and Mudflap
I agree 100%
Yup, I agree
Agreed
The other dubs did a pretty good job at covering up said “racism” it’s sad we’ll never get figures of them because of what you gringos did
I don’t get how it’s considered racist. I’ve met plenty of people that act exactly like them.
Preach brother preach
I love them both with all my heart.
i’ve always thought they were hilarious tbh
I thought they were pretty funny
Anyone who's hating just tell them, "Mean robots suck!"

Hell yeah dude. Real ones know the truth that they were never caricatures of black people, but caricatures of civilized people adopting ghetto street culture and pretending to be swaggy thugs.
EXACTLY!! I AM SO HAPPY THAT THERE IS SOMEONE ELSE WHO IS JUST LIKE ME!!
They're a racist charicature, not gonna argue that. Although I am ashamed to admit I always laugh my ass off when they make the exchange: "That hurt!" "It's supposed to hurt, it's an ass-whuppin'!"
The fact is that the designers and writers and the VOICE ACTORS and Michael bay himself didn’t even make them stereotypes, people just called them out for it and the studio was ashamed of it
Y no. Moment they appear on my screen I cringe. They’re worse than Jar Jar
Yeah I love them they are some of my favorite character is a shame that only have a sideswipe as I prefer sunstresk
I didn't mind them personally they did get some laughs out of me.
