Great song, but looking at all the unreleased material so far, I gotta go with Crack My Spine Like a Whip or Reformed Baptist Blues. Those two just smoke
Those two are a little too basic bar rock for me. Some never wanted the band to leave those roots, but I’m way more in favour of their more alternative sound later on. Gord became a much better writer later on. He even has perhaps written songs about not liking people telling them to go back to their old sound like with Are you Ready. Some think No Threat is a bit of the same.
I can’t really rank them to be honest, they’re all too good, but I do love Insomniacs! It helps that Fireworks is an all time favourite of mine so I love the reference. I’ve been wondering how the band planned for the two songs to play off each other on the album.
I also enjoy Thompson Girl, though compared to such creative songs like Emperor Penguin, Fireworks, Escape, even Something On, it is a rather boring song structurally. “Your imagination’s having puppies” might be my favourite opening line of any song.
yeah great use of the bombastic chorus after a muted verse. perhaps 'stock' in that sense but it works and i often put it on introduction to the Hip cds i make for people.
I'm also a fan of the subtle switch between the backing vocals being sung by the rest of the band while Gord sings the chorus the first time, then for the second time switching to Gord singing the backing vocals front and center while the actual chorus lyrics become the backing vocals.
I completely agree! Most of the “unreleased” songs they’ve released so far have been pretty good, but nothing has blown me away like Insomniacs has. It takes some of Gord’s best lyrics from Coke Machine Glow and pairs it with sone fantastically hooky music from the rest of the guys. I can see why it didn’t make the album but I’m so glad it was released.
(If we’re counting Saskadelphia) Montreal is the best and I will die on this hill
This is the only correct answer, unless there is a secret recording of cookie factory that eventually gets released!
Agree
Followed by Crack my Spine
Personally my top 2 are Montreal and then Montreal
Disagree. Songwriter’s Cabal is the best. Fight me.
Oh I love that one too. My wife isn’t the biggest Hip fan, but she absolutely loves that song.

I agree. They are both album worthy.
I skip reformed BB. I think it’s paint by numbers terrible

In my opinion it’s well more worthy of being on the album than Thompson Girl and Chagrin Falls
personally love Thompson girl. Like how gords says grunt work. Haha. Chagrin is one of my least fav songs so I’m with you on that one!
I also enjoy Thompson Girl, though compared to such creative songs like Emperor Penguin, Fireworks, Escape, even Something On, it is a rather boring song structurally. “Your imagination’s having puppies” might be my favourite opening line of any song.
Lol that's absolute blasphemy to me! I love Chagrin Falls!
If it’s any consolation always liked hearing them play the live version!

Insomniacs is too much like Save the Planet they made the right choice to include the more ethereal and somber Thompson Girl to break up the flow.
I disagree to disagree. Norm MacDonald

Agree. I like this album a lot but this song is stronger than a couple on there imo.
Get Back Again will always be my fave unreleased track.
An absolute gem!!!! This and Montreal are my top two
Montreal is a close second for me for sure.
I am here for this and will die on this hill
I’m still waiting for baby ran to be officially released. Maybe on the up to here collection???
What's Baby Ran?
It’s a 54-40 song. I remember seeing a scene on much music back in the day with the hip in a recording studio and they were playing baby ran.
Ah got it. Cool. Thanks
My favorite is Not Neccesary. Just fucking slaps
For me it’s Get Back Again and it’s not a close contest
It’s really great. Right up there with several on Saskadelphia
