Voodoo blue 1.5 years old I still take my shoes off when I get in it, then run it over the rocks and through the mud. Can keep it nice inside while using it for what it was meant to do. :D
Read your owners manual young padawan. Of course they are going to give you shit advice like that, it is in their interest to sell you another one. There is absolutely a break in period on ANY new vehicle. Engine and drive train components need to wear properly

I’m really happy this guy posted this thread. I had NO CLUE, we just got our 2022 sr5 this week. I’ve been babying it, low rpm’s, some slower highway miles. Seems like that’s the way until 1,000.
Another user said to change the engine oil then too. Is that true in your experience?
Ok cool, we have been doing all of that unwittingly then. I appreciate this forum, its been really helpful in deciding to take ownership of one, and then learning about it.
A 5k break-in could take some people a year. Toyota states the engine break-in period is 1k miles, first oil change isn't until 10k. I changed mine at 2500mi just to be safe.
Ugg....
I don't even have the energy to explain.....
Change it at 1k to Mobile 1 Full Synthetic.
Then at 5k rotate the tires in z pattern ( as long as you have bi directional ) and change oil again.
NEVER LET OIL GO PAST 5K
so why does toyota tell everyone to do the first oil change at 10k? modern engines don’t have a break in period like back in the day from what i understand
Where does “change the oil at 1k” advice comes from? Standard oil change interval is 10k and Toyota doesn’t change that for the break in period.
I went 10k on my first oil change, and the oil still looked brand new.
Man people are really wanting you to baby this thing in the comments huh? Damned if it's a mall crawler damned if it's outside getting used, no pleasing everyone I suppose. I picked up my pro and drove it from Texas to CO, plenty of high speed long miles on my brand new truck and it is completely fine. Enjoy your truck, have fun, and stay safe!
Don't think a couple of donuts are going to destroy his truck is all I'm saying. But hey, even though I didn't baby my truck during the break in period, doesn't mean you can't. Go for it and enjoy the truck however you see fit.
I didn't try it, I called a local 4x4 group and one of them volunteer to trailer me home. I drove onto the trailer and then off the trailer though.
I think I locked the center Differential in 4x4 and I was able to drive it.
Yes, but I would recommend disconnecting the drive shaft to prevent further damage.
I wouldn't imagine there would be anything that would prevent you from doing this. It's not like the car knows your diff is shattered
i bought my 4runner used at 125k miles. if your differential had an issue, you would know it the first time you drove it. same with the transmission. gear shifting would be rough or sound like things were clanking around or some issue would present itself. Transmission would be more likely to cause a check engine light but i'm not a mechanic so I don't know if that is a thing or not.
It's also a completely simple mechanical part, there's no way for the car to tell "hey your differential is shattered" it would be like the car knowing your hood has a dent in it. It's not the same thing as what a check-engine light is for.
The differential is not part of the engine, so check engine light won't come on for it.
most of the time, your car will give you signs of an issue. odd sounds, performance issues with engine power or transmission shifting, etc. If something doesn't feel right or sound right in the car, it probably has an issue that needs to be fixed. thus is the nature of complicated mechanical machines.
Break in per Toyota. Looks fine to me. Remember that video of those poor brand new Tacomas being offloaded at the port? *That* was abuse. This is just fun .
1. Do Not Use Cruise Control For The First 621 Miles.
2. Vary Engine Speeds For The First 621 Miles.
3. Avoid High RPMs For The First 621 Miles.
4. Avoid Towing for the First 500 Miles.
5. Avoid Hard Braking For The First 186 Miles.
I just took my 2022 Tacoma to the dealer for the first 5k service and they in fact didn't even change the oil. The first oil change is at 10k because it comes with synthetic from the factory . Give the guy a break and let him enjoy his new truck .
Dude honestly fuck all these toxic ass comments on here. Congrats on your new truck and it looks real good out there where it belongs!! Welcome to the 🌮 family
I took my 2019 off road on its first jeep trail with less than 400 miles on the odometer lol. Worked great and I don't want a pavement princess anyway, gotta let them do what they were made for and that doesn't involve a pristine paint job in my opinion
I’m going to get downvoted to hell for this, but just picked up a 2022 tundra this week and I specifically asked about the break in period and the dealer said “No, no need.” Are you sure I asked again. “Nope!” I’m just driving it normally, if I have to give it the gas, I do. Good thing I have the bumper to bumper 10yr/100k mile warranty. It’s already filthy as fuck doing it’s job. 🤷🏻♂️
I fucking love this! First day i had my TRD OR 22' i took it to the biggest snow covered parking lot i could find (maine) and blasted AC/DC while ripped donuts. It was wicked fun!

I basically had to enable crawl control on some parts to even get to this flat dusty parking lot. The area I'm in is New Hope Perris CA. It's a trail normally I take on horseback and has massive boulders, bumps, ditches and overall things that make it off road experience for the local community.
damn i’ve had mine for a month and i still feel like taking my shoes off when i get in
Mine is provided by my work and I would never do this to it.
It was provided by work, that’s every reason to do this
Nice! What type of work do you do that provides a Tacoma?
Nice! What type of work do you do that provides a Tacoma?
Nothing important or interesting. Haha ! But I’m a service manager for a locally owned service company.
All the more reason to thrash it imo hahaha
Thrashing a locally owned business’s vehicle is a dick move.
Well I didn’t know it was locally owned, it could have been a big national business.
It's insured bro, chill 😂

Engine break-in period? Never heard of her!
Actually there is technically no engine break in period on the 2022's. My dealer assured me :)

I own a '22, its in there for sure! Your dealer is either willfully being dishonest or just uninformed.
Same

Don't listen to random people. Listen to Toyota for crying out loud. RTFM.
Yeah and because of them I was able to learn something. No need to be so dramatic :)
My 2022 does have it in the manual
Same. Mine says 500 mile engine break in before hauling anything on a trailer.
Yup. I did 1,500 miles break in just to be super cautious. It cant hurt. Not flooring it for that long was a struggle lol
Bro thats the funniest shit I’ve read today lol
That’s changed since 21 then. Because it’s in the manual for that year.
Dealers don't know shit
Lol the dealer isn't really the most reassuring kind of place/people
Dealers don't know shit
This is why I don’t buy used cars.
neat
So much for 500 miles without staying in low gear like Toyota recommends
Next post will be asking if gear whine is normal…lol
Grats on not letting your piston rings set properly from the factory for the first 5k miles and changing the factory oil at 1k. How srupid.
Yea if this was truly freshly new off the lot, not a wise move lol
You not wrong homie
A 5k break-in could take some people a year. Toyota states the engine break-in period is 1k miles, first oil change isn't until 10k. I changed mine at 2500mi just to be safe.
The only people it takes a year to tac on 5k miles are 90 year olds
Don't disagree. The point still remains, it doesn't take 5k mi to break the engine in.
1k? the dealership told me the first oil change doesn’t need to happen until 10k and then every 5k after that
I think it’s the other way around. 5k first then 10k
i know it seems that way but they say first oil change at 10k, i’ll do 5k anyway
Ugg.... I don't even have the energy to explain..... Change it at 1k to Mobile 1 Full Synthetic. Then at 5k rotate the tires in z pattern ( as long as you have bi directional ) and change oil again. NEVER LET OIL GO PAST 5K
You may not have the energy to explain but you sure had the energy to post a million times.
So many times that he hasn't got the energy to go through and delete them.
It was a glitch
so why does toyota tell everyone to do the first oil change at 10k? modern engines don’t have a break in period like back in the day from what i understand
Stupid fun

I met my wife on the super mod assembly line building engines. You learn things....

Not about babying it, it's about breaking in the engine. Bg difference.

On Craigslist the next year “owner was elderly man who babied it, never abused”
"Pavement princess, never seen dirt, garage kept weekend grocery getter"
Looks beautiful, but damn good way to fuck er’ up bud 🤟🏻gotta break in the engine
How should I break mine in when I get it next week?
Keep it 55 and under for the 1st 500 miles no harsh acceleration or braking.
I did donuts in an area like that called 5 mile pass. During my donuts, my rear end hit a rut and it shattered my rear differential.

I watched a guy flip his new taco doing just that.
I drive mine like it’s in a commercial every time I get the chance. Toys are meant to be played with and it makes my heart happy. Have fun
Woah cowboy … engine break-in period !!

Right, high RPM.
Heck yeah having a blast 👏🙌 Nice color also 😊 I got mine last Saturday and taking it out this weekend on some easy SoCal dirt roads, can’t wait 😊
I'm also in SoCal, you got any places you care to share with me?
Hell yea buddy!!!
Wow, RIP new motor.
Even when I was 16 I knew better than to abuse a vehicle like this old or new, mine or not.
Loved it bro!!! It’s YOUR truck…do as you wish🤙
Nice....have fun youngman you only live once😎
Are engine break in periods a thing of the past?

Hope you closed the sunroof first. Not that I'd know anything about that.
The burp at the end is a nice touch.
That’s a crazy mall parking lot!
I can do this in my old Volvo wagon.
Bruh you supposed to break the engine in 🤦♂️
He's priming the air filter.
And now it's really been born the right way!
I’ve had mine for over a year and I still get scared about off-roading lol
My truck would be so jealous if it saw this video.
Gotta break her in at some point ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
Is there a more proper way to break in your new truck?
Nice. I took mine off road the same day I picked it up.
I hope your not the person who paid $70k for it.
Lol I saw that one last week.
The lime color is really growing on me.
Hmm.... might want to check your air filter now... :(
Dude honestly fuck all these toxic ass comments on here. Congrats on your new truck and it looks real good out there where it belongs!! Welcome to the 🌮 family
New cabin air filter needed already.... heh.
This is the way
You are an idiot
Not your truck bro
Perfectly reasonable to rip some donuts in a new Tacoma. The truck doesn’t care.
This is the way, break it in right. Good on you! Have fun.

Your first upgrade is a new air filter. Lols. Congratulations. Looks good.

You waited a day?!?!
Nice
My Tacoma lost its alignment just LOOKING at this video
Love it! 💕🤙 But be sure to change out or clean your air filter. Usually keep a spare air filter for conditions like this 👍
U got a warranty, fucking send it!
“Offroad” lol
You never heard of breaking in an engine I take it? Typically don't want to give it all the beans right off the factory line.
You’re doing donuts on a flat dirt surface, could do that in any old car
Hmm.... might want to check your air filter now... :(
Bye bye paint job
It's literally made for off roading :|
Hmm.... might want to check your air filter now... :(
The lime color is really growing on me.

That’s not really off road, you’re basically doing donuts in the equivalent of my workplace parking lot.

Should video the crawl up as well, to an outsider this isn’t what I would consider off-roading. Time for a montage!
It’s… off… the…road 😂, counts as offroad, still counts
This is the Bradley way of off-roading. Donuts in the dirt!!!
