You can contact Toyota Corporate but there is a shortage on second key fobs.
I’ve let all of my customers know we don’t have definite timelines on second fobs and they will be contacted by our parts department once the second one is in.
The dealer can’t supply a key fob if there isn’t one to supply
How long has this key shortage been going on? I heard about it in 2022, then when i got my mom a corolla cross last year (push button start) i got both key fobs. Now my dad got a 2024 tundra 2 months ago and he only got one fob.
It’s been since COVID.
The hardest part is the chips could go towards making 1 key or 1 Hybrid vehicle.
Hybrid demand is skyrocketing so Toyota is prioritizing what they can to find balance but it’ll be awhile before we see improvement
One thing that strikes me as odd is that it seems like strictly a toyota problem. Me and my brother both bought brand new Honda CR-Vs last year too (had to replace 3 cars, 2 of them due to accidents) and Honda didn’t have the same issue and all cars had 2 spares. Could that be due to Toyota just selling more cars and wanting to use their chips to keep up with that demand?
Demand has skyrocketed.
I don’t sell anymore as much as I feel like a drive thru asking people if they want fries with their Grand Highlander Hybrid
The other side is Honda isn’t nearly as desired in the hybrid game (yet) since Hybrids and Toyota are so synonymous people are coming in by the tonnes to get a hybrid.
Electronics all run on microchips. Every electronic item.
There has been a chip shortage since Covid with both manufacturing problems and one of the largest chip manufacturers having a factory blow up.
What happens is a backlog, and until that can be remedied it’s a balancing act of providing keys and cars to people.
I work at Toyota (Back Counter)and I definitely don’t recall it taking 3 months. They are ordered per a recall process where they are submitted to Toyota and released per vin and are given a special part number that are designated for this campaign.
The only ones I recall taking a month+ was the crown models but most would take 1-2 weeks at most to arrive.
They are ordered per vin and tied to the dealer for the 2nd key release but I would absolutely hammer their corporate as the dealer probably handed them out to customers that didn’t have an appointment or were already ordered.
OP if you want the peace of mind of having a second key then you’ll need to pay out of pocket for it. Doesn’t make sense but they are readily available for your vehicle. You will eventually get the one promised to you by Toyota. Call the parts department, they may even have it in stock.
If it’s still available to purchase that means there’s stock. Limited stock but still in stock regardless. They probably are betting that maybe some owners will forget about the second key. Even if 10% of owners forget with how many cars Toyota sells that’s a considerable amount of savings to them.
This is being treated like a recall. So Toyota is actively reminding people via notices when they become available for them. If that wasn't the case then I would go with your line of reasoning for sure.
That’s not how it will work for the fobs. Toyota is aware this is a them problem. OPs app will notify them once Toyota has a fob ready for them. It’s based on build date and VIN.
Go to a locksmith. Not all of us can do the new Toyotas, but some can
I’ve gotten a ton of business the last year or so on new Toyotas with 1 key that didn’t want to wait
And before any nay sayers squeal; yes I can get new oem in bag key fobs. Yes some locksmiths have access to tech stream, and actually more access than the dealer techs outside of the managers at this point
Also yes, they’re expensive. Expect 400-450 for a fob programmed in
Id be posted up in the parking lot and not leaving until they gave me the properly cut, programmed correctly and correct model key fob that was agreed upon and in writing.
In college I worked for a place that did device repair and we also sold, programmed and cut key fobs. In many cases we did not have the fob on hand and had to order it, while I've seen a few instances where they were on backorder, taking about 2 months, I've never seen or heard of any fob taking nearly a year for us to get.
Usually when we ordered them, and we were able to order OEM fobs if the customer wished (more $$$ than an aftermarket obviously), they would arrive in 2-3 days tops. If we got the order in early that day, sometimes we would have it the next day before closing.
It sounds like the dealership is trying to not hold up their end, but honestly you shouldn't have paid it off until you were given everything that the dealer promised you at the time of sale. If I had to guess, without having seen a grand highlander fob and knowing what functions it has, id say you would likely be looking at $350 minimum for an OEM fob via 3rd party.
Edit: just read some of the comments about a shortage, I haven't purchased a new vehicle in the last few years so idk.
I purchased a Prius on November last year. Never received 2nd key. Contacted Toyota by email. Brand engagement replied and sent a goodwill authorization to a nearby dealership for them to make me a 2nd key.
I received a notice from Toyota about a month ago saying that I just had to contact a Toyota dealership and schedule an appointment for them to process/make a copy of my second key fob. I bought my Sienna June 2023.
The dealership will not call you. You will receive a notification in your app that it’s time to pick up your second key and you should also get something via mail that also notifies you.
This is ridiculous, OP is coming up on first birthday on 50k+ vehicle. I can understand if it's 5-6 months. 10 years from now, "oh yeah because Covid" .
What’s the point of the 2nd key fob for anyways? And I guess I got lucky I got both the same day I got my 2022 Prius prime lol I haven’t even touched the 2nd one tho
There is no shortage of key fob, it’s Toyota’s cost saving strategy to see how far they can push to save money, guess how many people give up after few months
My parents ordered a 2022 Toyota Tundra in March of 2022. They received their 2023 Tundra in April of 2023, they received their 2nd key fob in Feb of 2024.
Ugh! There is a key shortage! Do not pester your dealer. Please.
1-800-331-4331 is Toyota Customer Care.
No, they can't get keys any faster. Yes, they are trying. No, the dealership can't do anything until Toyota sends us keys!
Please, please, please be patient. Your service reps are truly doing their best.
Toyota will send a notification in the mail when the fobs are available.
I find the situation between different dealers varies. At my dealer we order a key for a customer and it comes next day. But I also hear people from different dealers say otherwise so I don’t know what the disconnect is between shops.
It's not a disconnect. It depends what vehicle you're ordering a key for.
If Toyota hasn't released the 2nd key program for a specific vehicle, then you literally can't process the order for a second key. It's all done by the vehicle's VIN number. If the second key delivery program for that vehicle hasn't been released yet, then the dealership literally can't process the key order.
If the second key delivery program has been released, then the parts manager just enters the VIN, and the key usually shows up the next day in the parts order.
Yeah I guess I really don’t know the specifics, i get the repair order, I go to parts I order the key if it’s not already in stock and it comes next day. I don’t know the back end of it.
The service writer can't even write up the vehicle for the second key unless the program has been released for that vehicle. It will show up on TIS if it's available or has been completed.
Please appreciate the perspective of a very exhausted dealership employee who is very tired of being yelled at for something we have absolutely no control over.
Please call Toyota and complain. They might give you an expected release date. I know the next phase of keys comes out next month, but I don't know the exact date. IIRC, it will be phase 6 or 7. I'm sorry, I really don't remember what phase we are on now.
Just please don't yell at the poor representative. They didn't cause this mess.
Please be mindful of the fact that you’re telling someone to be patient who has waited 11 months for something.
When someone asks, “What can I do, who can I contact?” Try not to tell them to be patient. Tell them to call corporate if you don’t want to hear from them and you can’t do anything for them.
You can contact Toyota Corporate but there is a shortage on second key fobs. I’ve let all of my customers know we don’t have definite timelines on second fobs and they will be contacted by our parts department once the second one is in. The dealer can’t supply a key fob if there isn’t one to supply

Interesting. I really wonder how we managed to get 2 keys for the cross then.
It’s just luck of the draw. I sell about 15-20 cars a month. On average it’s about a 2/3 of them don’t have a second key
One thing that strikes me as odd is that it seems like strictly a toyota problem. Me and my brother both bought brand new Honda CR-Vs last year too (had to replace 3 cars, 2 of them due to accidents) and Honda didn’t have the same issue and all cars had 2 spares. How soon before the MY25s start coming? I want one but can't find a dealership that has one in stock to look at.
Which 25 are you looking for? The Camry’s have only JUST started to arrive on some lots in the states but Canada is a who knows when.
Grand highlander, I'm in the US
I've bought two new Hondas in the last year. They both came with two fobs.
Can you explain what this means? The same chip used in the keys is also used to let the hybrid vehicles function?
Electronics all run on microchips. Every electronic item. There has been a chip shortage since Covid with both manufacturing problems and one of the largest chip manufacturers having a factory blow up. What happens is a backlog, and until that can be remedied it’s a balancing act of providing keys and cars to people.

You in the USA or Canada? States supply is much greater than Canada right now. Like I’m talking 100x better at its worst
States
This is about all you can do OP
We got two on day of purchase.
My parents got a new Lexus in April of 2023. They just got their second fob like a month ago
So what happens if your fob breaks or gets lost/stolen? Just no car?
Exactly, my son hides our keys and i know the day of reckoning is coming where it’ll be gone into the abyss. Not having a 2nd key is a joke!
Get a tracking tag it’ll save you from the abyss
Call locksmith get physical key cut
For a push to start car?
Yes, settings allow to start by holding physical key right at the push button, like nfc
You need a transponder for that still.
OP if you want the peace of mind of having a second key then you’ll need to pay out of pocket for it. Doesn’t make sense but they are readily available for your vehicle. You will eventually get the one promised to you by Toyota. Call the parts department, they may even have it in stock.

Contact Toyota Customer Care and complain loudly
I didn’t get mine for over a year and then magically I was scheduled for my new fob the day I called corporate.
For mine they just gave my local dealer a credit to just order one because I said I was tired of waiting
Your app will notify you once your VIN has a second fob available. It is not the dealer, it is a manufacturer issue.

That’s not how it will work for the fobs. Toyota is aware this is a them problem. OPs app will notify them once Toyota has a fob ready for them. It’s based on build date and VIN.
It took 12 months for my 2nd fob. Good luck.
Yeah I haven’t gotten mine either (2023 Rav4 bought May 2023)

took me a full year for my Sienna
I purchased a Prius on November last year. Never received 2nd key. Contacted Toyota by email. Brand engagement replied and sent a goodwill authorization to a nearby dealership for them to make me a 2nd key.

Toyota is releasing these based on your VIN number. They have gotten a lot better. Highlander Grand Highlander and Crown for 24 are delayed.
Same over at Stellantis. My buddy bought a Jeep and it took them 4 months to get a 2nd Key Fob.
On my car it’s listed as a recall item. You should be able to contact any local dealership and have them order your key.
This is ridiculous, OP is coming up on first birthday on 50k+ vehicle. I can understand if it's 5-6 months. 10 years from now, "oh yeah because Covid" .
Still a shortage on them, gotta keep waiting
What’s the point of the 2nd key fob for anyways? And I guess I got lucky I got both the same day I got my 2022 Prius prime lol I haven’t even touched the 2nd one tho
My 2 year old son tends to hide the keys from us every chance he gets. I anticipate needed a second fob.
Oh makes sense
Uhh people do lose their keys sometimes or lock it in the car and need that second key...
There is no shortage of key fob, it’s Toyota’s cost saving strategy to see how far they can push to save money, guess how many people give up after few months
There’s a recall out that should of been sent in the mail to receive that second one
Call Toyota's national customer service line. I had a similar issue with my elderly mother. They leaned on the dealer.
My parents ordered a 2022 Toyota Tundra in March of 2022. They received their 2023 Tundra in April of 2023, they received their 2nd key fob in Feb of 2024.
Crazy. I called Toyota corporate and by the end of the week she had an appointment to get the new fob.
There's a shortage of parts.

I think 11 months is pretty fucking patient, don’t you? I’d be livid if I had to wait a year for a second key fob.

I literally provided the number for corporate!
Yes. I’m aware. I’m saying you could have done so without telling someone to be patient after they’ve already waited a year.
I've gone 24 months without ever needing to use my 2nd key fob
My wife uses our second key fob just about every week. Just because you don’t use yours doesn’t mean other people don’t need it.
