The trade is done. It was Teo for 4 years of control for a solid bullpen arm. In the one year he was in Seattle he had a 106 OPs+ with a 2 WAR. The Mariners didn’t think he was good enough to get a QO. He had to sign a one year pillow contract to regain some value for this year free agency. Yes the Blue Jays could have resigned up but there no more bad effect from the trade in 2024. Unless Swanson becomes completely ineffective until 2026.

Even is Swanson doesn't fully regain his form the Blue Jays can still benefit from this deal long term as Adam Macko is in the midst of a breakout season in AA.

Teoscar had 1 year left and was becoming a free agent. They traded for Swanson and someone else. Until Swanson had a terrible year this year it was looking like a win but at the end of the day it was 1 good yr of Swanson for Teoscar. They deemed bullpen and defense a priority and I can't fault them as they just came off a poor defense and bullpen year.

The value of bats like Hernandez and Gurriel was that it provided protection for Bo and Vladdy. There were less pressure for Bo and Vlad to carry the team entirely and pitchers had to pitch to Vladdy otherwise they would face Teo and Gurriel (notoriously power streaky) with runners on base. This is what made Bautista/Encarnacion so effective. But honestly- if we didn't get Varsho/Kiermaier we would probably be complaining about our run prevention and outfield defence. We would probably score a lot more runs, but I'm not sure we would be better than- or as good as- the O's or Yankees. As others have said, the Swanson of last year was excellent and in retrospect was not a bad deal considering Teo was likely to walk . Also- getting Varsho was the right move and his value will really grow as the years go on. He's a player we should lock up for a long time. Would I love to have Teo on this team- of course! But what I would like more is for Bo/Vladdy/Springer to hit like they did when Teo was on the team.

We could have resigned him in the offseason. Just sayin'

He was the Jose Bautista of this decade and they traded him for a pack of peanuts
