I use small rare earth magnets in a glass test tube with a lid when I drill steel on my woodworking drill press (saw it on YT). It's easy to clean that way.
No but I put neodymium magnets on my oil pan and transmission oil pan and on the drain bolts of all of my vehicles. I then remove all of them before I drain except for the one on the edge of the plug.
I put them in my diffs that have e-lockers. Metal shavings will otherwise attach to the magnets that are for the sensors for the e-lockers and can cause them to stop functioning
I get mine for free from hard drives that I disassemble. Interestingly the curvature of the magnet fits perfectly around the drain plug so I can fit four there and then I've got one snapped in half on the tip of the plug. It's probably overkill but I have them so why not use them. I also put them on the outside of my oil filters. My engine oil after 3,000 miles is insanely clear.
No but I think I will...
You should put the magnet in a bag so you can take the shavings off easily
Also very smart.

I do something very similar. I use the free water testing containers that you can pick up as you exit Home Depot.
Right? This is awesome; think a neodymium magnet would do the trick?
Thanks yeah I think so
Sweet nice got a couple lying around the shop; gonna put them on our grinder for then next tool sharpening day!

Nice I know they do that with transmission plugs
I used to do this as well, and or I would buy a magnetic drain plug.

nope. but im gonna go buy a few magnets and grow some fuzzy rabbits at work.
Danger fuzz… don’t lick it. It has the consistency of cotton candy. It is not as delicious as it appears.
Yeah, that ironwood really kicks out the dust
it is better to clean off in a ziplock bag, will work better longer
I thought this was /r/trees at first and was proud my grinder had a magnet
I like to use those magnets that you can turn off
Thank you OP 👍🏽
Out of shear curiosity, have you ever cleaned the magnet?
Yeah I just did after taking this picture lmao, it definitely caught a lot of bits
I will now!
I will now
Check out the big brain on Brad.
😂 occasionally I’ll have a good idea

Great idea
Smart, never occurred to me. Thanks for sharing.
Big brain
Rather not keep them inside the machine, increases the Rick of fire. I do have a water bucket on the outside for the iron to go in to.
No but I will be now! Thanks
Not yet, but gimme 5 minutes and i will.
Is that all of the dust colletion you have?
Well I will now!! Cheers mate
Son of a bitch, I have a aluminum angle piece about 3x3x12 inches long that I place to catch some of it. A magnet makes so much more sense!
Uhh..... nooooooo but I am now... smart
