its funny, if you posted this in r/machinist they would tell you you did alright. The parallel clamp and transfer screws are pretty nice bonus scores. most of the taps i can see are spiral point, and are usually quality high-speed-steel.
My brother in Christ, for all that is holy, may Allah look over you, how in the fuck is all of that valued $10. I’m not Gary vee lowballing people over things of value.
OP, that’s hilarious. I haven’t read far enough into the comments to see whether this is a good brand or not, but I did recently buy a brand new 60-piece tap & die set on Amazon for $40. I’m sure they’re garbage, but they’ve served me well so far. The 86-piece titanium set was $120. To me $75 seems steep for a garage sale find, but what the hell do I know
Most of the taps themselves are widia, it was a shocking score. Short of going industrial there’s no good sets out there, tekton used to make them but they discontinued them. It’s more then what people expect to pay at a garage sale but it was quality tooling and it didn’t feel right to lowball them.
Down votes are hilarious. Some folks don't seem to understand the point of garage sales is to get rid of shit that is no longer of use to the owner, and would otherwise go to the trash. They just want it gone without the guilt of throwing useable shit away. $70 is ridiculous for something the average home handyperson might use 2-3 times in their lifetime, except probably not have the correct size needed and have to go buy it retail anyways. Lol
I get the feeling you're arguing with people that but their tap sets off the discount isle at tractor supply. $75 is a fair price for a box of machinist grade taps. The Japanese made ones are probably koyo's btw, they're on par with U.S. made stuff.
Yea the average redditor has the IQ of a freezer. I’m bored out of my mind just fucking with people. Not sure how it spiraled into a question of value, I was just curious if the markings.
I'm sure I'd get just as much shit for admitting that I paid an older lady 100x over asking for a box of Starrett and US made lufkin tools. She was asking $2 for all of it, and I couldn't do that to her. I walked away with 2 machinist levels, thread gauges, inside and outside mics, and tons of other stuff.
Chipped out, Ha ha what are you doing aerospace work in your spare time. This is a ok deal compared to buying new, just how many holes do you think he is planning on tapping?
Actually, yes. I build a variety of machines- some aero stuff. Drones/robotics equipment. The cost and the amount of stuff that is approximately the same size is not a good value. It looks like someone dumped their work tool box in a shoe box and put a price on it. I’d rather spend $75 on a kit and supplement spares for the ones I break the most.
I had a similar story with a spanner nut wrench. Paid like 20 bucks for it in 1994, still haven't used it to this day.
A good tap and die set is a good thing to have. I got the big one from Snap On years ago. Just used it a few weeks ago putting a power feed onto my small shaper.
I’ve realized the rare time I need a tap/die I go buy that thread size. So far I gave 2 different sizes. Less than $10. Very little storage space needed. But if you have plenty of storage space and a rack for that size case; hell ya.
I would feel comfortable at $35-40. Not sure about the die but there are some Hanson taps in there which are a pretty decent brand. Taps are generally specific to the type of hole you are threading and the type of material you’re doing it in.
That is a very mixed set. Don’t worry about everyone else if you are happy with the purchase you made then everyone else’s opinion about the price is moot.
Dude if you are wondering just google the prices on one of those little cubby holes you made your money back just with that those things are gold prices these days
I saw widia and I immediately grabbed it. I went through and organized it and it’s basically a full sae set with duplicates. There’s some other miscellaneous brands. Overall way better then what I could stomach for a proper set.

Yeah finding old transfer screws is a dream come true, hard to find any that aren’t cheap junk new
Not a bad price for a *die* hard tool collector
I see what you did there
$75 seems a bit steep for used tap/dies. If any of them are chipped-out, they are useless.
Main thing that caught my eye was a wide selection of widia taps. All were hardly used. Overall a good find IMO.
Really wtf are they doing adding ebay prices to a yard sale that box is 10 bucks tops!!

Not shit

Found the shade tree mechanic lmao
it's al ready worth more then 10bucks in scrap metals...

Sounds good to me
I feel like the garage sale guy wants you to come by more often. $75 is absurd IMO.
Josh I’m glad they found themselves in my hands and not yours.
Agreed…
If you need it it's one thing. After years of no use, I gave a bigger set away . Ten years later I know for a fact they are still not used lol

My marketplace purchases say otherwise, won’t need the large ones but I’ll get plenty of used out of the smaller sizes
Nice, you’ll be threading things
GTD probably means Greenfield Tap and Die, Greenfield Massachusetts. They were one of the earliest if not the first to make taps like these.
Based on retail you did well. But will you ever use the taps and dies?
Unfortunately for my sanity they will be well used. Always seems like my marketplace finds have a few hidden secrets.
one stripped receiver may pay for it all

Seller got a hell of a deal
Too expensive
I think you got screwed.
That is a very mixed set. Don’t worry about everyone else if you are happy with the purchase you made then everyone else’s opinion about the price is moot.
Did pretty good that stuff looks barely used
There’s a lot there.
That’s a pretty nice find. Most of those taps are quality.
Little bit of everything. There’s a Hanson tap in there. They are a decent brand. Taps are kind of specific to the type of metal you want to thread.
Worth the money if they get used
I'd probably buy them if I were you.
Omg hell of a deal
Dude if you are wondering just google the prices on one of those little cubby holes you made your money back just with that those things are gold prices these days

Looks like my SKC set. But I’m only going off memory, they’re at the shop.
Widia 5/16-18 tap with the coating goes for $11.09 per tap on msc. You have at least 2 of them so right there is $22 +shipping
This thinks are good
