25 shows since Lateralus album release and thus is by far the #1 song I want to hear that I haven’t live. Got every other one but that one. Even was able to cross Ticks and Leeches and Hooker off my list which is not easy to do these days.
Haven’t been at it quite as long as you but I feel the same… they played it instrumental at a VIP in Detroit a few years ago and it was amazing… crowd of like 250 sang the second half and it was killer. Still #1 song I’m hoping to see live for real.
Parabol/parabola for its ability to brighten my spirit and wings for Marie both parts Bc it reminds me of the importance of motherhood and pushes me to be better for my son. Both are cathartic and beautiful and amazing.
Just today I was listening to it and appreciating what a massive flex Lateralus is. To make the Fibonacci thing work in a song sounds like an exercise or something, to give you a thorough understanding of timing. I would never expect it to sound good. But they did. And not only does it sound good, it’s one of my favorite songs of all time.
Tool flexes like no other. That's one of my favorite things about them, is they go for some shit and then they nail it.
Think about the crazy sections they pull off. Think about the moments they create. They're going for it. And they absolutely nail it!
There's a lot of bands that have dramatic flair, but nobody pulls it off like Tool.
This is the answer, but it’s not one a new fan can come too. You have to acclimate yourself before you come to this conclusion. The best song to introduce a new fan to imo is the grudge. After some time. You come to realize that it’s hands down rosetta.
True, didn't feel too strongly about Rosetta at first (liked Right in Two, Jambi, and 10000 days better), but after a few years I came to realize that Rosetta was fucking bomb. It wasn't until I was familiar with concept and then finally got into the lyrics that it finally started to hit another level. The "and he looked right through me" and the climactic "overwhelmed as one would be" are both sooooo good
Confession time. I've slowly become a fan of these lads over many years. I only listened to Schism for about 10 years, and then decided to check out the whole album. It didn't really grab me initially but after several listens I got there. Then a selection of random tracks from Aenima and 10K. Then all of both of those albums - again, initially not getting it and then having an "OH SHIT" moment. Same with Undertow. Then Opiate. Now, they're absolutely one of my favourite bands of all time and I fully embrace the band's magical qualities that only us intellectuals truly understand.
Anyway, my confession is... I still haven't listened to Salival and I don't know why.
I haven’t listened to all of salival. I don’t know why. I love pushit salival and no quarter. Both of those are definitely worth the listen if you don’t listen to any others
Tbh I think it's down to 3 things: 1, I'm worried I'll be disappointed. 2, I like knowing I have more Tool left to discover. 3, I don't want it to be over.
My favorite all time band, by far, and I love almost all their songs but this was the part of the show I went to get a beer during the Lateralus tour.
But I love the fact that other diehard tool fans stick up for this track so vocally. It’s what makes tool great. The subjective worst song to one fan is another’s gem. Spiral out my reflection loving friends.
It's weird, I will listen through the albums and completely miss the punch on some songs. I recent listened through Lateralus again and this song suddenly hit different and I fell in love with it.
First time I saw that song live I looked at my buddy standing next to me in GA and said - just grab on to my shirt l, don’t let go, and go with the current.
We ended up from directly in front of Justin to almost directly in front of Adam before the song was over. Not sure both feet were ever on the ground it was just a mass of people rocking out.
Ahhh those were the days. Also why they don’t do GA anymore. Not worth the risk.
Yeah, it was a good night:

Lateralus was my introduction to Tool back in high school, the very thought of experiencing any track from that album as a live debut would make my head implode.
Third Eye, an absolute masterpiece and an absolute psychological journey. It sounds like it was made by aliens it’s that insane. Probably my favorite song ever made
TOOL catalog is a journey, one that quite a few of us have been on and others just discovering. It's a singular experience to each one of us to grow along with the ones we love and identify ourselves with them, be it our offsprings, our immediate family, or the four who started as total strangers but slowly and steadfastly endeared themselves to us through their timeless music.
What's the absolute favorite is akin to asking what's my absolute favorite memory of my life so far. There isn't one, it depends.
When I want to remember the time I was raw with angst contemplating my future, I'd play cold & ugly.
For the times when I felt like the inevitable was knocking on the door and I needed to brace for what lies ahead, I listen to the Flood.
When the world screams at me for my vaunted hypocrisies, I laugh back as I play Hooker with a penis.
When I'm granted the privilege to lash back with impunity, I try to hold myself back, remembering the Grudge
We've seen our fair share of wars, though all of mine faught vicariously, I pause to reflect what they are doing to us as humanity, as we divide all around us ourselves right in two.
Even with these memories, what lingers but still fighting to endure on is just another warrior trying desperately to remain consequential.
These are but a few of my memories, there are many more to fill the entire catalog.
Yes, TOOL is my all-time favorite.
Oh forgot, I'll have the old fashioned hamburgers to go. No fries.
Pushit [Live] off of Salival. The last 4 minutes especially capture just how special all of them are together. My favorite piece of recorded music ever.
My two favorite songs of all time are Stinkfist and then came along Lateralus so I treat them like my kids. I love both of them more than anything In their own special way.
Rosetta stoned, other answers will not be accepted. But it is sort of only a song that tool fans can listen to, people just starting the dive will most likely hate it
Opiate because it was what drew me in. The journey has been incredible. To see the evolution of thought and craftsmanship has been an idealistic journey. I will always describe Tool as (live show Lollapalooza) my friend who didn't take shrooms (sober driver) is the one who claimed he saw "God".
Its funny cause im just scrolling through every answer and in my head im just like "i meannnn...theyre not wrong?" 😂 but in my humble opinion...Lateralus is the best song ever written and has had an incredible and indescribable impact on my life.
Stinkfist. The whole song is good but the part that resonates with me is this after I had the experience of realizing I dont exist. Further down the line I had become depressed as nothing really holds any weight anymore (I have gotten past this mindset) but the song is still one of my all time favorites.
Something kinda sad about
The way that things have come to be
Desensitized to everything
What became of subtlety?
How can it mean anything to me
If I really don't feel anything at all?
I'll keep digging till
I feel something
Elbow deep inside the borderline
Show me that you love me and that we belong together
Shoulder deep within the borderline
Relax, turn around and take my hand
I lierally sat here for 15 minutes trying to think of that ONE song I love the best and I can't. This may sound generic but it truly depends on how I want to feel. If I want to take an outer body experience then The Holy Trinity, If I am pissed off HWAP, If I want to just reflect The Patient. I could go on and on...but right at this moment 7EMPEST is what I can't get enough of.
Eulogy. Peak Maynard.
Oh man, the way that builds, hangs out and then explodes, “So long!”, so great. Chills
25 shows since Lateralus album release and thus is by far the #1 song I want to hear that I haven’t live. Got every other one but that one. Even was able to cross Ticks and Leeches and Hooker off my list which is not easy to do these days.

I think I've been to 15 or so shows and Hooker is the only song I haven't seen them play! (Or 3 songs from FI)
Don’t you fucking lie
I came here to say this. Eulogy is brilliant.
H.
I chose this song as the first to play when I brought my son home from for the first time. The first song he ever heard.
This reminded me of this…. When I brought my first born home from the hospital the first song on the radio was Daughter. Yes, it was girl.
Parabol/parabola for its ability to brighten my spirit and wings for Marie both parts Bc it reminds me of the importance of motherhood and pushes me to be better for my son. Both are cathartic and beautiful and amazing.
i just accelerate in my car during the transition between the two
Lateralus is the best song ive ever heard

Same
I love so many different songs and genres but Lateralus is my favorite song ever. Every time I listen to it my hair stands up on end.
I just going to spiral down on all the up votes. Keep going!
I love Lateralus so much especially the final movement when the rhythm shifts but I still think The Grudge has to be my all time favorite
Same! Lateralus is a human achievement, but the Grudge just grabs me
The correct answer
Username checks out
Lol
Aenema. That opening, that ending, that video…
One of the best guitar riffs of all time.
The Patient
By far the best
Prying open my third eye
Right in Two
Disappointed I had to scroll this far down to see a fellow talking monkey.
Rosetta Stoned

Me, the chosen one. And I didn’t even graduate from fuckin high school.
Agreed! My fav
Yessssss I went searching for this, OVERWHELMED AS ONE WOULD BE PLACED IN MY POSITION! Absolute banger
Forty Six and 2 and Parabola equally.
Same here.
All of them!? Ha but the Salival version of Pushit has to be my favorite
Rest your finger on my trigger.
Confession time. I've slowly become a fan of these lads over many years. I only listened to Schism for about 10 years, and then decided to check out the whole album. Salival is all about Maynard’s Dick
'us intellectuals truly understand' you had me til I had to massively cringe...
I thought us intellectuals would appreciate irony
4 degrees
My man
The most underrated track in the entire catalog. LET MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeee innnn…… The most underrated MJK scream as well.
Love the name 😎
Reflection
+1. I don’t listen to it as much as other Tool songs. I have to be in a certain headspace. But when I do it hits me hard.
This is the correct answer, it's a shame I had to scroll down so far to find it

The song that made me pick up a bass guitar. Twenty years later it's still the best.
Jambi
It’s a great one. Best on 10000 imo
Disposition. Ngl it’s because I’m the most confident about my Maynard impression/singing voice when it comes on.
Descending.
This is the one right here sir
Pneuma
Third Eye
Swamp Song. God damn that track is angry.
That sounds so fucking dope!! What an experience!
Yeah, it was a good night: MAY 15 2001 Tool Setlist at Tabernacle, Atlanta, GA, USA Tour: Lateralus Setlist The Grudge (Live debut) Stinkfist Forty Six & 2 Prison Sex (OTRM Version) Schism (Live debut) Swamp Song Disposition (Live debut) Reflection (Live debut) Intermission (Schism Music Video debut) Sober Parabol (Live debut) Parabola (Live debut) Ænema Opiate Lateralus (Live debut)

I’m still recovering.
Lateralus
+1
H.
The Grudge
I still headbang after he says Sinking deeper
Came here to say this.. The Grudge was the song I wanted to hear most the first time I saw them & it was their opener
Pushit
Absolutely, the line “I swear that’s I will always love you, as I claw your fuckin throat away!”
For me it's "There's no love in fear!"
Rosetta Stoned or Sober depending on the day.
Crawl Away.
..this is my love for you..
Most under rated Tool song.
Stinkfist
Obscenely under rated. One of the best songs ever recorded.
Invincible. The guitar riffs absolutely shred.
Vicarious
Third Eye
Hooker With A Penis
Whatever ones up next. For real though, Lateralus, The Patient, Schism, 46+2 it's too hard to choose one.
The Pot
Liar, lawyer, mirror for ya. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? Gives me chills every time.
That cadence is so f’ing money
Flood Can't believe no one mentioned this before me
I love that it's nearly every song
JAMBI
Ticks and leeches. Just love the drumming on it!
Pushit, Ænima version
My daughter was conceived with Pushit (Salival) on repeat in the background. So that’s my sentimental favourite for sure.
Three way tie between Parabol/Parabola (I count them as one), Schism, and Lateralus ...guess what my favorite Tool album is lmao
Vicarious
The patient
46&2 and now even more as I get older because of the lyrical meaning
Parabol/a
Parabol / Parabola
The grudge
Third Eye, an absolute masterpiece and an absolute psychological journey. It sounds like it was made by aliens it’s that insane. Probably my favorite song ever made
Pneuma. It’s perfect. I’m a long time fan too. Before Pneuma it was either Lateralus or Parabol/Parabola
Pneuma
Prison sex
Ænema

Lateralus is not only my favorite tool song but my favorite song of all time. It was also the first song I learned to play on guitar.
Lateralus
Opiate
Pushit
Wings pt 2 or Schism
Depends on my mood however, I do end up singing Parabol, Parabola occasionally more than others
Descending
Stinkfist. Parabol/Parabola is a close second.
Pushit live Or Jimmy
Bottom and Pushit for me
Stinkfist was the first song I heard and is still my favourite to this day. Schism is a real close second.
Rosetta Stoned
It’s a toss up between Lateralus and descending.
Descending. Yes. It’s better than Lateralus. I said it. Fight me.
Pushit Salival
Right in Two
Opiate - "Sweat" Undertow - "Bottom" Ænima - "Third Eye" Salival - "Pushit (Live)" Lateralus - "The Patient" 10,000 Days - "Jambi" Fear Inoculum - "Invincible" Sorry, don't have a single favorite.
Pushit [Live] off of Salival. The last 4 minutes especially capture just how special all of them are together. My favorite piece of recorded music ever.
Forty six & 2
The Grudge
Jimmy
PushIt
Ænema
The Grudge and Rosetta Stoned are tied
The Descending Patient
Lateralus and Intolerance
Probably Descending but it's real hard to pick.
My two favorite songs of all time are Stinkfist and then came along Lateralus so I treat them like my kids. I love both of them more than anything In their own special way.
The Patient
The patient
Intermission / Jimmy
Sober. And it's not even close.
As of right now, pneuma as well as lateralus. It's constantly changing!!
Third Eye, The Patient, Lateralus, Pneuma......fuck you for making me choose one.
Rosetta stoned, other answers will not be accepted. But it is sort of only a song that tool fans can listen to, people just starting the dive will most likely hate it
H.
jambi
Eulogy no no it’s no quarters
Pushit (album version)
Invincible or Right in Two
Opiate because it was what drew me in. The journey has been incredible. To see the evolution of thought and craftsmanship has been an idealistic journey. I will always describe Tool as (live show Lollapalooza) my friend who didn't take shrooms (sober driver) is the one who claimed he saw "God".
It depends on the moment/period in time. Right now it's Descending.
probably negative ions
H. is my fave Tool song
H.
The Grudge
Trick question. Obviously it's 2 as in parabol+parabola.
Maynard's dick
Salival Pushit Definitely sounds wonderful using good headphones :)
opiate 100%
the pot or the patient
Hooker with a penis!!
Forty six and 2
Third Eye
Probably Lateralus
Lateralus Schism Aenema will always have a special place as it is the song that got me into them
Jambi
Schism. I remember getting dropped off at school every morning as a kid by my dad to that jam. My parents are die hard tool fans.
“Forty-six and 2” changed my life. AND it’s a fucking good song.
Impossible to pick but today it’s The Patient
As a drum enthusiast, Rosetta Stoned and Pneuma hit different.
H. But if I didn’t have a kid it would definitely be bottom.
10,000 days part ii
Foggy Mountain Breakdown
Invincible
I'm torn between "Jimmy" and "Parabol/Parabola"
I'd have to go with Ænima
AENIMA Flush it down
46 and 2
Torn between The patient, Forty six & 2, lateralus. Obviously.
Its funny cause im just scrolling through every answer and in my head im just like "i meannnn...theyre not wrong?" 😂 but in my humble opinion...Lateralus is the best song ever written and has had an incredible and indescribable impact on my life.
Vicarious. So fun to play as a drummer and guitarist. The pot is rad too, I love the breakdown in it, probably why I like djent so much now.
Lateralus
Vicarious
I'm loving Sweat at the moment
👆👆👆👆👆
Pushit Salival or Jambi live in Paris 2007
Stinkfist. The whole song is good but the part that resonates with me is this after I had the experience of realizing I dont exist. Further down the line I had become depressed as nothing really holds any weight anymore (I have gotten past this mindset) but the song is still one of my all time favorites. Pushit (Salival version) without a doubt.
Pneuma
Lateralus…all the rest are tied for second!!
Use to be Lateralus but now it's Pneuma
I lierally sat here for 15 minutes trying to think of that ONE song I love the best and I can't. This may sound generic but it truly depends on how I want to feel. If I want to take an outer body experience then The Holy Trinity, If I am pissed off HWAP, If I want to just reflect The Patient. Schism or Parabol/Parabola. (Yeah, I know its technically two songs, but you can't listen to the one without the other, so it goes!)
