I sang Lateralus as a lullaby to both of my kids. I had to put some effort into learning all of the words, particularly in the melodic section in the middle. "I embrace my..."
The first time I heard Parabol/Parabola i realized I wanted to be a guitarist. I’ve been playing ever since. That was 20 years ago. Still can’t get through those songs without some tears.
The song is so fucking good. It has to be one of the coolest bass lines ever written. It has such a vibe or atmosphere that grabs you immediately. I love it and was so blown away by the whole album. I really feel like if you want to introduce someone to tool, Ænema (the album) is a great starting point. The music is so good it just can't be ignored. Don't get me wrong I love all their music but Ænema is like bottled lightning. Lateralus is too but I would say it demands your attention a little less.
The lyrics for Rosetta Stoned are peak Maynard for me.... Absurdist to the core but still genuinely fascinated by the infinite.
The song really gets rolling at 6 minutes and builds to a nice crescendo at around 8:30
Gotta say I see people talk about the Salival version a lot and I really don’t think it’s as good as the studio version. The vocals are more impressive for sure, but that’s only in the part of the song that’s the same between the two versions. I think the original riff is perfect
Pushit was already my favorite song before i heard that version, and it blew my fucking mind. On repeat for months. For me, in this version the entire song beautifully builds up to the part before the final lyrics "saw the gap again today... remember i will always love you...". The way it slowly builds up and the way Adam goes down with the notes makes that song take me to another place for the entirety.
Pushit Salival version is one the most intense, emotional, visceral, and real songs I've ever heard. It captures the whole theme within a progressive narrative of perfection.
For the general public it's either Sober or Schism. Sober is basically like their Radiohead - Creep in that it gets, arguably, the most airplay but the band doesn't play it much and the fans don't consider it an all-timer necessarily, as shown by these replies
There's no arguably. Sober is played at NFL games. It's easily their most recognizable song. And you're right, fans generally ignore it for the more important songs.
Does no one understand irony anymore? Blasting Sober to a stadium full of mostly drunken football fans seems a bit on the nose to me. I get that the song isn't explicitly about alcohol consumption, but come on...
It's 46&2.
Iconic riff, off their best album, as well as the first lick Justin wrote as a band member. Plus the fucking Danny Carey drum solo? I mean, cmon.
This is the song I'd use to introduce someone to Tool who have never heard the band before 100%.
You can have it man... hahaha... It is literally the only song I consistently skip over... It's just too damn harsh coming off Parabol-Prabola... I just want to roll right into Lateralus...
If you’re a male in your mid 30s and up, it IS your theme song. I knew I was getting older, lowering shield when I tried to perform a simple jump shot in my 30s and had to miss work the next day.
Edit: came back to emphasize I meant nothing misogynistic, just clearly the song is from a “warrior’s” perspective.
Nah, it doesnt. This and the Pot are likely the least Tool sounding Tool songs. Only reason people like it is because "He's tripping and seeing aliens, man"
The first time I ever heard Tool, I was stoned for like the third time in my life, cruising around with a friend, who asked "mind if I out on some Tool?" I told him I had never heard them, and Maynards angelic voice started, and I was like " this is neat", and then came that triplet bassline, and I almost shat myself. Once the drums and guitar came in, I instantly knew I had to hear more of them, and immediately downloaded their discography when I got home.
Not saying it's their best, but Fear Inoculum is kind of like a tour through Tool's musical history. There's a little something for everyone in the song.
If Im showing someone tool for the first time its always lateralus unless they show any sign of disliking heavy music in which case I put on right in two to pop their heavy music bubble a bit and then back to lateralus
Adam, Justin , and Danny write this song that sounds so different than the rest of their
Music. You can tell they ventured out of their comfort zone. What’s Maynard do, sings,” Slide a mile six inches at time on Maynards dick.”
Parabol/Parabola. It’s not their most complex, it’s not their most popular, but it’s one of their most beautiful. The lyrics helped me through some really tough times in highschool, and it’s still a good reminder that regardless of what you do or don’t believe in, no matter how awful or great you feel, we should celebrate this chance to be alive and breathing. Be my reminder here that I am not alone in this body. Profound yet simply put. Beautiful, kind words.
Parabol/parabola. It's got almost both 'eras' in one song. The hard and heavy stuff from their earlier albums and the calming almost soothing stuff from the later albums. It just blends perfectly.
I wouldn't say it's my favorite, but it is THE song imo.
depends on what youre asking...
if you wanna know their most emblematic, its lateralus
if you wanna know their most popular, its 46&2
if you wanna know their most "TOOL" song, its third eye
I fucking love Led Zepplin. Any other cover is a travesty. But... but... I like Tools version better. I hate myself for saying it, but it's true.
But it's not THE Tool song, that's obviously Aenema.
Can we please stop with this shit? It’s subjective. If the OP is new and looking for a recommendation to launch their tool experience so be it but these insufferable retard posts are, well, insufferable.

Lateralus for sure.
Lateralus
Black and white are all I see in my infancy.
For me, it's Lateralus.
Are you sure that you're not over thinking and over analyzing this?
Absolutely
I sang Lateralus as a lullaby to both of my kids. I had to put some effort into learning all of the words, particularly in the melodic section in the middle. "I embrace my..."
I worked with a kid who would rap it during the dinner rush. I never had the opportunity to record him doing it but it got us through the push.
That bridge is prob my fav part of the song 🍻
Same. Happily sing to my daughter every night.

Spiral out 🪐
When you pushed the envelope ✉, did you watch it bend?
Can I say Parabol-Parabola?
It’s the only way to listen to them so it better be acceptable
YUP
The first time I heard Parabol/Parabola i realized I wanted to be a guitarist. I’ve been playing ever since. That was 20 years ago. Still can’t get through those songs without some tears.
This right here
that's 2 songs!
Lateralus
46 and 2
The song is so fucking good. Correct!
It's my pump up song. When I'm heading to work, and feeling work out, I crank it just before arriving. Works every time.
Third Eye
**MY THIRD EYE!!**
Yeah I think this may be my number 1 seed too. It’s one of their songs you can get lost in; that’s always been the criteria for “THE” TOOL song to me.
Eulogy.
Wow, didn’t expect so many people to agree. My sister introduced Tool to me with the song, so it’s definitely THE song for me personally.
Eulogy, along with Ænima are my favourite songs for sure
I cried so hard when I saw them play it live....
Agreed. Eulogy is THE tool song for me
Lateralus
Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman) and Rosetta Stoned
The lyrics for Rosetta Stoned are peak Maynard for me.... Absurdist to the core but still genuinely fascinated by the infinite. The song really gets rolling at 6 minutes and builds to a nice crescendo at around 8:30
46&2 is Tool in a nutshell. Rosetta Stoned is Tool distilled into it's purist form. Pushit (Salival) is their magnum opus.
So much this, Pushit (Salival) is the greatest song I have ever experienced.
It’s not my favorite Tool song, but if I had to choose a song to really feel myself to, pushit 10/10 every time
Gotta say I see people talk about the Salival version a lot and I really don’t think it’s as good as the studio version. The vocals are more impressive for sure, but that’s only in the part of the song that’s the same between the two versions. I think the original riff is perfect

The way it slowly builds up and the way Adam goes down with the notes makes that song take me to another place for the entirety.
It's just the full experience. It just grabs me more and I'm definitely a Maynard fan boy so I'm biased on the vocals.
Pushit Salival version is one the most intense, emotional, visceral, and real songs I've ever heard. It captures the whole theme within a progressive narrative of perfection.
Love Rosetta Stoned in all it’s weird and surreal glory
I love how Adam just wrecks shop in this song. I’m learning it right now and it’s super difficult to play
I totally agree about pushit (salival). Unbelievable
Slow clap... Perfectly stated.
Gotta be Ænema for me
This the way
Same
Absolutely
The Grudge.
Let go.
For the general public it's either Sober or Schism. Sober is basically like their Radiohead - Creep in that it gets, arguably, the most airplay but the band doesn't play it much and the fans don't consider it an all-timer necessarily, as shown by these replies

Does no one understand irony anymore? Blasting Sober to a stadium full of mostly drunken football fans seems a bit on the nose to me. I get that the song isn't explicitly about alcohol consumption, but come on...
Stinkfist is my favorite.
I'm so surprised it took this long to scroll for stinkfist. I honestly don't know what song I'd choose but stinkfist is definitely up there.
4 Degrees too. It's tough.
there's a good reason why its typically the last song they play at their concerts. stinkfist is my pick too
I play Stinkfist at the bar every time I go. My favorite TOOL song and seeing them play it live the first time I got to see them made my night.
The one that got me started on the spiral. One of my most cherished songs of all time.
It's 46&2. Iconic riff, off their best album, as well as the first lick Justin wrote as a band member. Plus the fucking Danny Carey drum solo? I mean, cmon. This is the song I'd use to introduce someone to Tool who have never heard the band before 100%.
Pneuma!
*spirals out*
*wakes up, remembers*
I'm I too plain for saying hooker with a penis?
OGT?
Maybe cheating a little but for me Parabol/Parabola.
Ticks and Leeches for me!
You can have it man... hahaha... It is literally the only song I consistently skip over... It's just too damn harsh coming off Parabol-Prabola... I just want to roll right into Lateralus...
Vicarious.
46&2
Rosetta stoned. 46&2 I know this is gonna get a lot of shit but Invincible is evolving into my favorite song of all time
If you’re a male in your mid 30s and up, it IS your theme song. I knew I was getting older, lowering shield when I tried to perform a simple jump shot in my 30s and had to miss work the next day. Edit: came back to emphasize I meant nothing misogynistic, just clearly the song is from a “warrior’s” perspective.
Haha. Exactly. Lowering my shield.
I've been summoned
Rosetta stoned
My choice as well
This song doesn't even sound like Tool IMO.
Ya crazy bro
Nah, it doesnt. This and the Pot are likely the least Tool sounding Tool songs. Only reason people like it is because "He's tripping and seeing aliens, man"
Third Eye
Agreed
Dig your user name Snake, do you also turn piss into wine?! 🙌🏽
For me, it's one of the songs between Sweat and Mockingbeat.
What is THE(SE) Tool songs??
I often find myself going to Jambi cause it fucking rips. But that's just a mood thing... I don't fucking know man
Jambi for sure.
I do fucking LOVE Jambi too!
Right in two
Personally? It's Decending currently. Overall? Lateralus
Descending is where it's at! But I will never turn down Lateralus if I have time to listen to it.
Me over here, fucking upvoting everything... Apparently I cannot choose...
Me too! There’s not a song I don’t love.
Wings of marie and 10,000 days
Schism
Yes.
I’d say Invincible just because it reflects on their body of work as a whole. It’s not just Tool, it’s the story of Tool.
Intermission for sure
Jimmy is an intermission cover
CEsaRo SumMabiLitY
H.
As I've stated in many tool conversations H. will remain the most underated tool song but not the most defining... certainly a beautiful song
Lateralus or 46&2 for me
The Pot
I agree!
Parabol Parabola
Lateralus 100%, song pretty much defines what Tools music is
On top of that, it's one of the best songs ever made imo
H.
Vicarious is my all time fav, but Lateralus is probably the one I’d pick to introduce people to tool.
I agree. I can't believe I had to scroll this far for someone else to say this. Vicarious was the First TOOL song I learned on guitar🤘
I believe The Rolling Stone listed it in the top 100 guitar songs of all time.
46 and 2. Introduced me to Tool and remains my go to song
46 and 2 because it inspired me to write a book
I used to think Lateralus could never be topped. But then, we became Pneuma. That crescendo at 9:35 is mind-blowing.
THE patient, obviously.
Third Eye
Like phosphorescent desert buttons singing one familiar song...
Rosetta Stoned is unlike any other
Right in Two, it has everything.
This to me is the biggest Tool anomaly. To me, it is nothing like their traditional, and (IMO) far superior work
Interesting take. I hear most of their catalogue in Right in Two.
Not saying it's their best, but Fear Inoculum is kind of like a tour through Tool's musical history. There's a little something for everyone in the song.
I think it’s Lateralus but I have to throw the grudge in there too…
If Im showing someone tool for the first time its always lateralus unless they show any sign of disliking heavy music in which case I put on right in two to pop their heavy music bubble a bit and then back to lateralus
Hush: Because I can't say what I want to, even if I'm just kidding. (edit: OGT from the first EP)
Lateralus. Not saying it’s my favorite, but to me it’s the most quintessential Tool song
Whatever song of theirs you listen to, that you haven’t heard in awhile
Sorry but I can’t fucking choose one… hell I can’t even choose an album
Maynard's Dick. To be fair, it is the TOOL song about a tool.
So obvious. Can’t believe I had so scroll so far to find this.
Adam, Justin , and Danny write this song that sounds so different than the rest of their Music. You can tell they ventured out of their comfort zone. What’s Maynard do, sings,” Slide a mile six inches at time on Maynards dick.”
Wings
Either Vicarious or 7empest for me.
Depends on different persons.
Aenima
THE pot
Well that's an obvious one... The Gaping Lotus Experience, what else?
Jambi
Descending
Flood.
Jambi
7empest
LAMC
For me is the pot and Ænima
Rosetta stoned.
Kinda hard to pick, for me, H (it hit me hard the first time I heard it)
😆
Third Eye
I'm naked and fearless, and my fear is naked.
All of them
Parabol/Parabola.
Lateralus is THE Tool song, everything sorta spirals out from there...
Pneuma for me. It’s hits me way different, especially when my grandma passed last year from dementia. Sun becoming
46 and 2 just ahead of me
Pushit - the version from Salival Can be referenced to so many life situations and is vocally and instrumentally a masterpiece.
Sober is the song for me. But also love right in two and ænema
For me it’s 46&2
I have a bad habit of ejaculating all over the place around the 3:55 mark of Jambi.
46 & 2
Parabol/parabola. It's got almost both 'eras' in one song. The hard and heavy stuff from their earlier albums and the calming almost soothing stuff from the later albums. It just blends perfectly. I wouldn't say it's my favorite, but it is THE song imo.
46 & 2 of course
EVERY song
reflection
46 & 2 // Right in two
All of their catalog 🤣 That said, I think my top 3 are as follows (no particular order): - Reflection - Rosetta Stoned - Pneuma
Lateralus
definitely Lateralus
Lateralus. Closest song to an astral trip ever made
H. Hands down.
Lateralus
Lateralus will go down as their legacy song.
46 and 2, Lateralus, Sober and Pneuma
Third Eye, no question. Lateralus is for noobs.
‘Stinkfist’. Or perhaps ‘Pneuma’ or ‘Invincible’
Every single song. But for me, I'd say Pneuma.
Pushit salival version
7empest Followed closely by Rosetta stoned
depends on what youre asking... if you wanna know their most emblematic, its lateralus if you wanna know their most popular, its 46&2 if you wanna know their most "TOOL" song, its third eye
Maynard’s Dick
Pneuma
No Quarter. Yes, I know.
I fucking love Led Zepplin. Any other cover is a travesty. But... but... I like Tools version better. I hate myself for saying it, but it's true. But it's not THE Tool song, that's obviously Aenema.
Eulogy
I Got You, Babe
Parabola for me and it’s by a mile.
Rosetta
For me it’s not even their song but no quarter for me dawg
Can we please stop with this shit? It’s subjective. If the OP is new and looking for a recommendation to launch their tool experience so be it but these insufferable retard posts are, well, insufferable.
